Main takeaways from Detroit Lions home opener loss to Seattle Seahawks.
Transcript
00:00 John, the Lions lose a disappointing one in week two to the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field.
00:04 What do you make of that loss for the Lions?
00:07 Yeah, Vito, real unfortunate for the Lions. They had the crowd at Ford Field super excited,
00:14 arriving early, ready to cheer on a team that had defeated the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:19 had some time off, came in at 1-0, and many people believe that the Detroit Lions had a
00:25 great opportunity to defeat the Seattle Seahawks given the fact that they came in having injuries
00:30 to their offensive line, Gino Smith struggling in the opener. But Vito, when you look at it,
00:35 the Seahawks came in with a great game plan. They wanted to play a physical brand of football,
00:41 and they came in and played desperate. So you look at the Seahawks and the manner in which
00:46 they played, they just were really taking advantage of soft coverage on the Lions' defense.
00:51 They were able to utilize all their weapons and DK Metcalf and Lockett and Kenneth Walker,
00:57 and they came in and played and executed at a higher level than the Lions.
01:01 Quite frankly, Vito, the Lions made far too many mistakes. Turnovers, Derrick Goff's interception,
01:07 Liss streak came to an end, unfortunately throwing a pick six in the contest, spotting the Seahawks
01:14 more points. And you look at it, despite the errors, despite the mistakes, drop passes
01:19 by Jameer Gibbs and missed opportunities, the Lions were able to make a comeback,
01:24 forcing the game into overtime. But Vito, when you look at it, the defense just simply wasn't
01:30 good enough to stop the Seahawks. The Seahawks led by Pete Carroll and Gino Smith, the veteran
01:36 savvy quarterback, was able to simply march down the field and end the game in overtime,
01:41 not even giving the Lions an opportunity to get the football back. So you could say that it was
01:47 at the hands of a coin flip, but in the end, Vito, you look at the defensive performance,
01:51 it was nowhere near good enough for the Lions to win the game. John, thanks for all the time.
