00:00 Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's brain chip startup Neuralink said on Tuesday it
00:10 has received approval from an independent review board to begin recruitment for the
00:15 first human trial of its brain implant for paralysis patients.
00:21 Those with paralysis due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotherapy lateral sclerosis
00:27 may qualify for the study, it said, but did not reveal how many participants would be
00:32 enrolled in the trial, which will take about six years to complete.
00:36 The study will use a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (PCI) implant in
00:43 the region of the brain that controls the intention to move, Neuralink said, adding
00:48 that its intentional goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using
00:55 their thoughts alone.
00:57 The computer, which had earlier hoped to receive approval to implant its device in 10 patients,
01:03 was negotiating a lower number of patients with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
01:09 (FDA).
01:12 After the agency raised safety concerns, according to current and former employees, it is not
01:19 known how many patients the FDA ultimately approved.
01:23 It has grand ambition for Neuralink, saying it would facilitate speedy surgical insertions
01:29 of its shipped device to treat conditions like obesity, autism, depression, etc.
01:36 In May, the company said it had received clearance from the FDA for its first in-human clinical
01:42 trial, when it was already under federal scrutiny for its handling of animal testing.
01:50 Even if the PCI device approves to be safe for human use, it would still potentially
01:54 take more than a decade for the startup to secure commercial use clearance for it, according
02:00 to experts.
