Cincinnati DC Bryan Brown On Coverage Issues Against Miami (OH), Favorite Defensive Strength, And More
Transcript
00:00 Russell, an All-Bearcats reporter here joined by UC defensive coordinator Brian Brown.
00:04 Coach, obviously everybody's frustrated with the loss, streak ends this past weekend.
00:09 What would, in your eyes, after going through the tape, were the biggest reasons for the
00:13 big plays that really impacted the game for Miami?
00:16 Well, I think the very first thing is the very first play of the game, just some miscommunication,
00:19 you know, from a corner standpoint.
00:22 I think it was in a different coverage, you know, and that's the biggest one, you know,
00:27 putting seven points on the board.
00:29 With the other ones, I think, you know, just not executing at a high level in critical
00:33 situations, you know, the third and seven, the third and 12, you know, neither one of
00:38 those should happen, you know, and as well as the quarterback scramble, you know, we
00:41 just didn't execute from that standpoint.
00:44 And you know, they caught a heck of a ball, you know, on the go ball on Jordan, I mean,
00:48 that was a heck of a play on their part.
00:49 You know, sometime they're going to make some plays, but for the most part, just some of
00:52 the execution stuff that we got to make sure we get cleaned up by this weekend, especially
00:56 with good teams that's coming in, it's average of 56 points a game, but the guys came out
01:00 here today on Sunday as well as today and came out here and practiced really well.
01:03 So I look forward to getting our redemption back this weekend.
01:06 Top thing you've liked, biggest attribute of this defense you've seen so far, and then
01:10 maybe the biggest thing you'd like to clean up.
01:13 Well, the biggest thing to clean up is just the penalties, you know, on the secondary,
01:16 just making sure we, you know, cover our guys without putting hands on and some of those
01:20 penalties, I don't think are penalties and Coach Sapp doesn't either, but you know, it
01:23 is what it is.
01:25 You know, the other thing is, you know, just from an excuse standpoint, like I talked about
01:28 in the critical situations, you know, we did it early on the first game and the second
01:32 game, but this game didn't do so well.
01:35 But I'm just really, really pleased with our defensive line, how well they're playing and
01:38 getting active in the run game.
01:40 Linebackers are getting downhill.
01:41 I think Dingles is doing an outstanding job right now, you know, and then threats, you
01:45 know, with two picks in the first three games, that's a big, you know, attribute to our team
01:50 being successful as well.
01:51 Got to get the ball back to our offense.
01:53 Eric Phillips, the dude's been so consistent down the down this year.
01:56 He's really elevated his game, even after being a nice reserve player last year.
02:00 What have you seen in his growth since you've become defensive coordinator over the past
02:04 eight months?
02:05 I think it's work ethic, you know, just coming in, I think, you know, from last year to this
02:07 year, you know, just talking to Coach Walt, just his work ethic, you know, he's getting
02:11 better each and every day.
02:12 He's becoming more of a leader, you know, he's a dad now.
02:15 So I think he realized the responsibility and things of that nature.
02:18 So he's getting after them practice, which is a great sight to see, but he's also being
02:22 really, really vocal, and we need that on his defense.
02:24 A couple more here for Coach Brown.
02:26 You talk about the quarterback run game, and that's going to be a factor this weekend with
02:30 Dylan Gabriel.
02:31 Is that, was that Miami?
02:33 Is that teams kind of playing your biggest strength against you guys, getting up field,
02:38 getting after the quarterback and kind of turning that around against you?
02:40 How do you balance that?
02:41 Well, I think you got to balance it around by making sure some of your hole players don't
02:46 get too deep, you know, to where they can get back on the quarterback and get him down.
02:50 Or even in some of his own coverages, you know, sometimes some of the backers should
02:54 have been able to pull him up a little bit earlier.
02:56 But that's some things you got to have a good balance and make sure you protect the big
03:00 plays from the passing game, but also being able to help take care of the quarterback
03:03 on the scrimmage.
03:04 Last one for Coach Brown here.
03:06 Biggest thing that stands out about an offense ranked top three in the country in points
03:09 per game?
03:10 Fast.
03:11 They go really, really fast.
03:12 You know, they want to go fast, as fast as they can go.
03:15 And want to get you misaligned and want to get you, you know, missing your gaps and missing
03:19 coverages and busting coverages so they can put up 56 points a game.
03:22 So we got to do a really good job of getting 10 toes on the ground, all 11 guys, understanding
03:26 what the call is, and just getting lined up and getting ready to play.
