Rishi Sunak has insisted he is "absolutely confident" the UK is on track to meet its net zero targets a day after weakening a host of pledges designed to help the UK combat climate change. Speaking at Writtle University College in Essex, the prime minister said, “the reason I’m confident is because we have delivered on all our carbon budgets to date.”

00:00 We've been through the numbers and we're absolutely confident that we are on track to hit all our
00:03 international and domestic targets, which by the way are world leading. And the reason I have
00:08 confidence in that is because we've over delivered on all of our carbon budgets to date. Despite
00:12 everyone saying, "Oh, you might not hit them," we've over delivered on them. Plus we can see
00:16 that the costs of some of these new technologies are falling far faster than people have predicted.
00:21 Offshore wind is a great example of that. Cost today, 70% less than we predicted in 2016.
00:27 And the adoption of new technologies is happening far faster than we thought. Electric vehicles being
00:32 another good example. So when you put all of that together, run the numbers as we have,
00:36 we're confident we're on track to deliver net zero and we can do it now in a more proportionate
00:40 and pragmatic way. That's how we're going to bring people with us, maintain consent for it,
00:44 and minimise costs for working families that could have spiralled into the thousands and
00:48 thousands of pounds. I don't think that's right.
