00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 Yubi, what's going on here?
00:08 Wednesday afternoon, big prediction show for Louisiana Tech.
00:11 Jaybird, it is lovely to see you, but I have to admit you look rather sinister with that
00:16 lighting that you got going on there.
00:17 Did something happen in Minnesota where Nebraska wins a game and all of a sudden it's like,
00:21 "I am the darkness.
00:22 Nebraska's always a game."
00:23 I want you to know I spent literally 10 seconds on lighting, so this is just a function of
00:31 not paying attention to the lighting.
00:33 Listen, just in the future, you might want to spend more than 10 seconds.
00:36 Let me do it, Bob Frady.
00:38 When you look good, this good, it does better with the lighters.
00:41 You got that right, baby.
00:43 You got that right.
00:45 Once we get outside of total darkness, it's all the bonus round for me.
00:48 So I am very excited about this week's upcoming podcast, Bob, because it's military week.
00:55 We are having our guest, Andrew Bunderman.
00:59 Not many of you may know that I'm a retired Navy commander, having flown the P3 Orion
01:04 for 25 years as a tactical coordinator and mission commander, eight years active, 16
01:09 winter-
01:10 Wait a second.
01:11 You rode in the P3.
01:12 You were the navigator, right?
01:13 You told me where to go.
01:14 Right.
01:15 I said tactical coordinator, mission commander.
01:17 Yes.
01:18 I flew the P3.
01:19 It's like, no, I told him where to go.
01:21 I liked my job on the P3.
01:23 The fun stuff in the P3 happened in the back.
01:25 The guys up front were like, "Eek, loud, eek."
01:31 Kind of like sports writers.
01:34 "Oh, we don't need that today."
01:38 The best part about the P3 was the 42 countries we got to go to.
01:43 In the active duty, we'd get anti-submarine warfare, tracking Soviet submarines, and the
01:47 reserves, we did counter-narcotics operations.
01:49 Got to see a good big half of the world.
01:53 We even went over to Japan a couple of times, China a little bit, South China Sea.
01:58 That sounds like a cool job.
02:00 I was like, "There it is.
02:01 I see it."
02:02 All right.
02:03 Do you get a bonus if you spot one, or how does it work when you're spotting Soviet
02:07 submarines?
02:08 Do you tail it?
02:09 Do you mark it?
02:10 Do you shoot it with some dye so you can identify it the next time?
02:14 What happens when you're tracking a submarine?
02:17 It's classified, UB.
02:18 I could tell you.
02:19 Oh, yeah.
02:20 I could tell you, but you would have to die.
02:23 The reason I'm so excited about the show is our friend Andrew Bunderman is going to be
02:30 on.
02:31 Andrew was featured prominently in the movie The Outpost.
02:34 It's a story about the Battle of Kamdash, the most decorated battle since World War
02:38 II, on which there are two living Medal of Honors winners, and Andrew, a Minnesota gopher,
02:45 grad, so we'll get his perspective on the Big Ten of the whole season.
02:48 Then we're going to talk a little bit about his experiences.
02:52 We just did, during the Minnesota game, we had him speak at an event at my country club
02:57 for the Nebraska Business School.
02:59 Hey, save something for the podcast there, Stock, while we're at it.
03:03 I will.
03:04 I will.
03:05 Listen, this is a Medal of Honor, right?
03:07 Well, he's Distinguished Service Cross, which is the second highest.
03:11 Distinguished Service Cross, man.
03:12 There aren't very many of those going around.
03:14 We're going to have one of them on our podcast.
03:16 You know why?
03:17 Because that's the kind of guy Jay Stockwell is.
03:18 He brings in the quality talent.
03:20 I just make jokes about sewer systems.
03:24 So you guys will get to meet Andrew on Sunday.
03:25 We're going to tape late Sunday afternoon based on his schedule, so it'll be out a little
03:28 later on Monday, but I promise you it's going to be a great podcast, and I highly encourage
03:34 you watching the movie The Outpost if you haven't.
03:37 As Bob has referenced, I'm a war movie buff having spent 25 years in the military.
03:42 Where does this lie on the list of Jay Stockwell's favorite war movies, excepting the fact that
03:47 you know Andrew?
03:48 It's like, what's the ... What is it ranked?
03:52 It's an instant top 10, because what they get right in this thing is just the real camaraderie
03:59 of a crew.
04:00 This was only 53 guys on this really remote outpost, and they were up against 400 guys.
04:07 As Andrew said in the speech, they got attacked, they were in a kinetic battle for 35 days
04:13 in a row.
04:14 Save that for the podcast.
04:16 Prediction time.
04:17 People are like, "What's your prediction?"
04:20 Hold on.
04:21 Is this disrespectful to Louisiana Tech that you're talking about war movies rather than
04:25 giving a prediction because you think we're done here?
04:30 No, no, no.
04:31 We can't take these guys lightly.
04:33 Let me kind of go in order of how I'm thinking about this game.
04:36 You got a quarterback battle now.
04:38 I think Heinrich earned the right to start, even if Jeff Sims is healthy.
04:43 But I know Matt Ruhle's got a favor in bringing Jeff Sims back, but Heinrich is the man.
04:48 He's big.
04:49 He even said it.
04:50 He said, "I'm big, I'm fast, I'm tough," and he demonstrated that.
04:52 He did have the one fumble, and then-
04:54 But that wasn't really a fumble.
04:56 He got his head taken into him, and yeah, it was a fumble, but not his ... It wasn't
05:03 like, "Oops, I dropped it."
05:05 It was a good hit.
05:08 But the good news is now we've got two proven quarterbacks, and I think they can complement
05:12 each other.
05:13 If one gets hurt, we've got one as a backup.
05:16 I'd let Sims sit and let that ankle really ill, because that ankle's going to be with
05:20 him the whole season if they try to bring it out too early.
05:23 Speaking of which, the injury bug has really bitten Nebraska this week.
05:28 It's quite a shame.
05:29 No question.
05:30 That's where I'm going next.
05:33 Especially in the context of the running back situation.
05:37 I'm glad we've got two quarterbacks that can play, but as you mentioned, Ramir Johnson
05:42 out with a shoulder and Gabe Irvin out with a hip for the season, both of them in surgery
05:48 this week.
05:49 You know what?
05:50 Hold on a second.
05:51 I hate when people say that he's out with a hip.
05:53 It's like he's always out with a hip.
05:54 He's got two hips.
05:55 It's like he's out with an injured hip.
05:56 Just saying the word injured, it's not that many syllables.
05:57 Two syllables, but injured.
05:58 He's out with an injured hip.
05:59 All right.
06:00 Okay.
06:01 Right.
06:02 I'm not out with a hip.
06:05 He's always out with a hip.
06:06 He's always out with a hip.
06:07 Because you know the N stands for knowledge, and I know that.
06:11 All right.
06:13 The good news is we've got Anthony Grant, who had a good year last year.
06:18 I was listening to some other podcasts.
06:19 They were talking about how he slowed down during the year and obviously had his turnover
06:23 issues.
06:24 This brings up Emmett Johnson.
06:26 Emmett Johnson's a kid here from Minnesota.
06:29 He actually dated, believe it or not, Blake Nixon's daughter, a friend of ours.
06:33 Really excited to see him play, local Minnesota guy.
06:37 And then Billy Kemp has put his hand up and said, "I could go into the running back room
06:41 if need be."
06:42 I still think we've got some good players.
06:45 There's two other younger guys behind them that look like they're ready to go.
06:48 I'm optimistic, quarterback and running back.
06:51 But now Nebraska's offense, Bob, is ranked 99th.
06:55 Okay?
06:56 Yep.
06:57 Here's the good news.
06:58 Our defense, rushing defense, is ranked number two in the country.
07:02 Okay?
07:03 And 29th overall.
07:06 Listen to this.
07:07 This is the offensive rank of all of our remaining opponents as of this week.
07:12 So as of week three, now it's obviously going to change.
07:15 But it lends support for your eight and four, Reco.
07:18 So Louisiana Tech, 58.
07:21 Michigan, 61.
07:22 Illinois, 87.
07:24 Northwestern, 125.
07:26 Only goes up to 130.
07:27 Purdue, 65.
07:29 Michigan State, 78.
07:31 Maryland, 22.
07:33 Wisconsin, 43.
07:35 And Iowa, 119.
07:36 So our defense against the remaining opponents as of week three stacks up very well.
07:43 Okay?
07:44 There you go.
07:45 What you're telling me, Stockwell, is that we have a chance.
07:47 The defense is playing 37 guys.
07:51 Literally 30.
07:52 That's a movie reference.
07:53 I know.
07:54 Which movie was that from that we have a chance?
07:55 Dumb and Dumber.
07:56 Dumb and Dumber, of course.
07:57 Yeah, yeah.
07:58 Plus, look at this point in the millions stuff.
08:01 Yeah, yeah.
08:02 So, exactly.
08:03 We have a very good chance.
08:07 And I'm not deep on Louisiana Tech.
08:09 I didn't really go.
08:11 But we're a 20 point favorite, right?
08:13 19 and a half.
08:15 Those half points matter.
08:16 Okay.
08:17 Well, it's 20.5 when I looked at it.
08:20 So my call is a 35 to 7 win.
08:23 The over/under is 47 points.
08:25 I would, again, I would take Nebraska 35-7 and the under in the parlay.
08:30 Although we lost the parlay last week.
08:33 So, there you have it.
08:35 That game was five seconds too long.
08:37 If the game had been five seconds shorter, we would have won the parlay.
08:42 That's why we go back.
08:43 Right.
08:44 Exactly.
08:45 Okay.
08:46 So I would say this about that.
08:47 Louisiana Tech puts points on the board.
08:48 Now, they give up a lot of points as well.
08:50 So I'm expecting a little bit more high scoring game.
08:53 I think it's 35-21.
08:55 So I think that Louisiana Tech will cover the spread, but that will go over.
09:01 But I think it will be a Nebraska victory.
09:04 But listen, this is what we thought about Georgia Southern last year.
09:07 So you got to hold your breath a little bit and see them come through.
09:10 I like the fact that they ran the ball and they're going to have to run the ball to control
09:14 the clock and good things.
09:17 Good things are coming.
09:18 Good things.
09:19 Awesome.
09:20 Well, hey, an update on our travel plans.
09:22 Our current plan right now is to go to the Wisconsin game at Wisconsin.
09:27 Unfortunately, Michigan doesn't work out.
09:30 It doesn't work out on my end either now, Bob, because guess what?
09:33 The 2022 United Country Club 2022, I'm talking green jacket match has been scheduled for
09:40 the first of October at 9 a.m. where...
09:42 Is this the G flight that you're in?
09:44 No, no, no.
09:46 A flight, A, B, C, D, E, F. No, no, no.
09:50 That's club championship.
09:51 I was in third flight this year.
09:52 I won my first match, lost my second match.
09:55 This is the 2022 season long member member.
09:59 So we're in the championship of that, meaning we won like six matches to get there, but
10:03 it was canceled or not canceled, postponed because one of the guys that is a professional
10:09 hockey player, a guy by the name of Eric Stahl for the, I think the Panthers, I think they
10:13 went to the Stanley Cup.
10:15 So he's back now.
10:17 And then, so we thought we were going to play it early in the summer, but then his partner
10:21 and an Achilles.
10:23 So Roger Hough and I...
10:24 Achilles injury, an Achilles injury.
10:26 Guess what?
10:27 He always has an Achilles.
10:29 He has two of them.
10:31 So day after the Michigan game, we are, we're playing that match and for the 2022 championship.
10:38 So Marty's still got the trophies.
10:39 Can I get to caddy for you?
10:40 Can I caddy for you?
10:41 Maybe.
10:42 Oh, that'd be fun.
10:43 And if you want to take out the kneecaps of the pro hockey player, maybe.
10:47 No, no, no.
10:49 I'll just wear a Boston Bruins shirt around him, see what happens.
10:53 That's great.
10:56 So Hey, listen, I think it's going to be a fun game.
10:58 I am actually probably not going to see it live because it's parents weekend this weekend
11:02 and I got to go to my daughter's college.
11:05 So where I will be scouting for next year because Arizona state, which is where she
11:09 goes plays USC.
11:12 So we'll see what happens with that game, but I'm going to try to catch it live.
11:14 But if I don't, I'll watch it on tape and we'll go from there.
11:18 Is this bears down bears down?
11:21 No, that's Arizona.
11:22 Oh, Arizona.
11:23 The sun devils.
11:24 Oh, that's right.
11:25 That's right.
11:26 Oh, you know that it's going to be 95 degrees.
11:31 Who's our favorite sun devil?
11:33 Randall McDaniel.
11:34 Randall McDaniel.
11:35 That's right.
11:36 Don't you forget that.
11:37 So you'll you'll hear more about Randall next week with the this weekend with the and her
11:41 buddies become a good friend of Andrew's as well.
11:43 So all right.
11:44 That's it.
11:45 That's the prediction.
11:46 We're looking forward to the Louisiana Tech two thirty kickoff on Fox.
11:49 It's a third Nebraska third nationally televised game this season.
11:53 OK, let's get it done.
11:56 Ready, Stockwell.
11:57 Go Big Red!
11:58 Go Big Red!
11:58 Happy Grand!
11:59 (gibberish)
12:01 Go get a grip!
