00:00 Motivation to stay fit comes from the very simple fact that I don't want my bones to start like saying things that I don't want them to say.
00:09 Pulling, braking, trying to make sure that my check engine light doesn't come on anytime soon.
00:15 Hey Black, it's Men's Health. We're here for the party.
00:20 Well I'm definitely not having a party so y'all must be here to see my gym and fridge.
00:25 This way.
00:30 Guitar in the kitchen. I can't wait to see what's in the fridge.
00:44 Alright, welcome to my kitchen. This is the fridge and let's get into it.
00:50 Alright, let's get into it.
00:52 I could start with this high vibe right here. This is from Erawan down the street.
00:57 Beet juice, green apple juice, rose water, lemon juice and the combination is probably like the best drink in the world.
01:06 Wakes me up in the morning. Great treat.
01:09 So does Erawan live up to the hype?
01:11 When I first came out here I was a little bit like of a hater when it came to Erawan but the quality definitely matches the hype.
01:18 What do you always have in your fridge?
01:20 Water for sure. Chicken broth, absolutely. Berries, always.
01:26 I'll take it here to the condiments. This one's almost ran through but this is Nando's Peri Peri Sauce.
01:31 Basically just hot sauce. I got introduced to Nando's on my first time touring in London.
01:36 This one actually has my name on it so it's pretty cool. Once I finish it I'm pretty sure I'll reuse the bottle.
01:41 Damn, limited edition hot sauce dropping soon.
01:45 What's another must have when you're on tour?
01:48 Well this is obviously too big to fit in the fridge right now but watermelon or watermelon juice.
01:53 Cleanses my palate, it keeps the mucus away, hydrates me and it's just a favorite.
01:57 How has your diet changed since moving to LA?
02:00 Mainly because I've had to introduce moderation to it a lot more.
02:03 So the things that I used to enjoy heavily like fried foods and processed foods and spicy foods, treats and snacks,
02:10 those have been turned down a generous amount and now it's really just a lot of water, a lot of fruit.
02:15 Veggies weren't a part of my original diet growing up on the East Coast and growing up with processed foods.
02:20 But LA exposed me to healthy eating and I appreciate it so much.
02:24 What does your diet mainly consist of?
02:26 I've been trying to add more into my diet and at the very least get three square meals a day.
02:32 It's a little bit hard when you're on tour moving around.
02:34 In the mornings I try to start with like a smoothie or broth or both.
02:38 If I'm feeling super hungry then I do go eggs, bacon, potatoes.
02:42 Turkey bacon is what I try to stick to but pork bacon is just really good.
02:46 So I have a moment where I just want the original kind of bacon.
02:49 But besides that, chicken, rice.
02:52 I love to make pasta so I have ground chicken in here.
02:55 Other bell peppers like tucked in the back.
02:57 If we're feeling really, really good then we migrate away from the fridge and we go find somewhere nearby.
03:02 What are your favorite spots in LA?
03:03 I am feeling like a gatekeeper because people will go there.
03:08 My lips are sealed.
03:09 Yume sushi bar on Ventura is really good.
03:12 There's another spot in Silver Lake but I won't tell you that one.
03:14 What do you drink or eat before performance?
03:16 I normally stick to fruits and things that don't like build up mucus.
03:20 So strawberries would be good for that.
03:22 Oranges for like vitamin C and energy but I try not to go too heavy on citrus because that can create mucus as well.
03:29 What would we never see in your fridge?
03:30 Milk.
03:31 Cow's milk.
03:32 Never, never, never, never, never.
03:35 In the back you might see almond milk but that's not for me.
03:38 It's even tucked far back because I don't even want to see the word milk.
03:41 Oh, I see it.
03:43 What's the toughest diet you've tried?
03:45 Whole 30 and it's not the worst thing in the world but the main portion of Whole 30 is like no added sugars.
03:52 Everything that we eat, everything that we buy has sugar in it so.
03:56 Don't drop the peri peri bottle.
03:58 This ketchup right here.
04:00 Added sugars, four grams.
04:02 All it had to be was tomato paste and vinegar and they could have kept it simple but you just got to sprinkle some sugar in it because that's America.
04:11 But I do have the no sugar version of ketchup in here.
04:16 What are the other rules?
04:17 I can't remember every single rule because I'm a little bit traumatized from it but basically cutting everything bad out of your diet, making most of your food yourself.
04:25 What is a food you can't live without?
04:27 So these are chicken wing sections, also called party wings or just called chicken wings.
04:31 What I do is I marinate them in lemon juice and a couple of just like basic seasonings, salt and pepper.
04:37 Let it sit for a day, let the lemon juice soak up and then I make hot wings.
04:42 They're still a heavy part of my diet.
04:44 Yes, I just can't kick it.
04:46 What's your go-to comfort food?
04:49 Crab legs.
04:50 That's a go-to comfort food for me.
04:52 That's the type of day where you don't really breathe in anybody's face afterwards.
04:57 You don't really get to wear your best outfit when you're eating it.
05:01 Obviously not something that we cook at the house because I'm not trying to actually cook a crab.
05:06 I'm just trying to enjoy, that's all.
05:09 What's your go-to burger order?
05:11 From In-N-Out, I also was a hater and I got converted as time went on.
05:15 I get a double double, no tomatoes.
05:18 I switch the spread for ketchup and mustard.
05:20 I add pickles, peppers. That's my burger order.
05:24 What's your favorite protein?
05:25 Hands down, it's chicken.
05:26 I honestly enjoy Caribbean food a lot, so lamb and goat.
05:30 They're not heavy in my diet, but if I ever get the opportunity, then I'm definitely eating.
05:34 There's been moments where I've tried to cut red meat out of my diet,
05:37 but every now and then I just get cravings for steak and we only get one life, so I'm really trying to enjoy it.
05:42 What's your snack strategy?
05:44 Snack strategy depends on the type of day that I'm having.
05:47 If I have had anything that influences my appetite, if you know what I mean,
05:52 then my strategy is rapid fire for the most part.
05:55 I'll grab anything in my line of sight.
05:57 I got some snacks in my bag right now that I'm not too proud of.
06:00 The unhealthy things, but when it's not that, it's everything that you see right here.
06:04 Do you drink protein shakes?
06:06 Bananas, strawberries, berries, passion fruit.
06:09 Put green juice in it and then I just add my protein powder on top of it,
06:13 once it's to the consistency that I want it to be.
06:15 Do you take any supplements?
06:16 Whatever vitamins my hands land on that day, normally it's what my body's calling for.
06:20 Sometimes it's strategic, if I'm feeling under the weather or something,
06:24 and then other times it's just like, I feel like I need iron right now, so let me just grab iron.
06:29 Do you drink coffee?
06:30 I do not drink coffee, although I had a latte yesterday.
06:35 I try not to do any heavy caffeine-influenced drinks because I had a situation with Coca-Cola
06:41 where I looked in the corner of my room one day and I saw it was 12 empty boxes of just cans
06:47 and I was looking like, that's a lot of soda.
06:51 That's a lot of soda.
06:52 Should we get out of here and go check out the gym?
06:54 It is that time of the day. I am ready to start my workout, so if you follow me, we'll head to the gym.
07:00 Alright, let's do this.
07:02 Okay, let's check out the gym.
07:11 Welcome to my gym. It is in the backyard, so there's no excuse for not working out.
07:16 And I am ready to get into it.
07:19 Do you have a workout partner?
07:22 I would say in the past, working out felt like more of a private, shy thing.
07:27 I definitely work out with a partner when I can.
07:30 We go for runs together every now and then, do yoga together whenever she's leading,
07:35 and recently did a weight training session together, so that was pretty fun too.
07:39 How often do you work out?
07:41 At least in some form, once a day.
07:43 Whether it's push-ups, whether it's sit-ups, whether it's stretching, whether it's running, whether it's weights,
07:48 I'm picking at least one thing a day and I'm doing it.
07:50 How do you stay motivated?
07:52 Motivation to stay fit comes from the very simple fact that
07:56 I don't want my bones to start saying things that I don't want them to say.
08:00 Pulling, breaking, the motivation is knowing that I'm getting older
08:05 and trying to make sure that my check engine light doesn't come on anytime soon.
08:11 What's your favorite exercise of all time?
08:13 Push-ups, the ones that I'm doing right now.
08:15 They keep me sharp, they keep my upper body strength super tight,
08:19 and yeah, they just make me look good.
08:22 What does a week of training look like for you?
08:24 Running, push-ups, jumping jacks, jump rope, eating good,
08:28 having weights that are easy to carry, and hydrating.
08:32 Has getting fit helped your performance?
08:34 It absolutely helps me as a performer.
08:36 It makes it so that my stamina allows me to go for 45 minutes,
08:41 an hour, an hour and 15, an hour and a half.
08:44 What's your morning routine look like?
08:47 Wake up, have a moment to myself in silence,
08:50 so that could be meditation or just sitting in bed.
08:53 Get up, stretch.
08:54 After I stretch, go for a run, make a smoothie,
08:58 do a mini workout back here, and then from there, it's whatever I want.
09:03 What's your least favorite part of working out?
09:05 Maybe it's that moment when your arms are wiggling,
09:07 and somebody's trying to tell you, "10 more, just 10 more, just hold on."
09:11 So when you're at your max or what you think is your max,
09:14 and somebody's pushing you to go a little bit further,
09:17 it's like love-hate.
09:19 What advice would you give to someone who's starting their workout journey?
09:23 Just stay consistent.
09:24 I think workouts, like anything, require a certain level of discipline.
09:28 If you feel like it's too hard, if you feel like you're bored,
09:33 if you feel like you don't see the results, keep at it, and that'll change.
09:37 What's your favorite part of working out?
09:40 Favorite part of working out is seeing the results of being consistent.
09:44 Abs start to come in, arms get cut up, chest starts to look less birdie,
09:50 and people enjoy it.
09:53 How do you keep your mind fit?
09:55 I would say by setting a routine for myself.
09:58 Anytime that I feel like off course,
10:01 the main issue is normally just because I broke a routine
10:04 or I'm not committing to doing a few things when I wake up every single day to start my day.
10:09 What music do you listen to when you work out?
10:11 When I work out, it varies.
10:13 Depending on the workout, if I'm stretching or doing anything like yoga
10:17 or just clear my mind related, then I can't do words.
10:20 If I'm doing anything intense like weightlifting or just in the actual gym,
10:26 then Young Thug is my go-to.
10:29 What's your most meaningful tattoo?
10:32 I would say it is the bear claw for sure.
10:35 This was during a time where people would just be like,
10:38 "Oh, if you got that, then you're not getting a real job."
10:41 The bear claw was me saying, "I don't really need a real job."
10:44 Do you have any scars?
10:45 I got this nice little crescent moon on the side of my face.
10:48 Ouch. How did you get that?
10:50 It was a pretty gnarly fight and a pretty gnarly glass.
10:55 A bottle and I left a nice gash.
10:58 Are you ready for rapid fire questions?
11:01 I am absolutely ready for rapid fire.
11:07 All right, let's do this.
11:10 All right, let's get into some rapid fire questions.
11:14 Workout time, 7 a.m. or 7 p.m.?
11:17 7 a.m. over 7 p.m. all day.
11:19 Squat or deadlift?
11:20 Squat over deadlift for sure.
11:22 Favorite song on your workout playlist?
11:23 A song called "Girl Supreme" by this group, Stella with a Cygnus.
11:27 Crossfit, yay or nay?
11:29 Nay for now.
11:30 Pull-ups or chin-ups?
11:31 Pull-ups over chin-ups for sure.
11:32 Dumbbells or kettlebells?
11:33 Dumbbells for me.
11:34 Run on the treadmill or in the great outdoors?
11:36 Great outdoors, run over a treadmill, run every single time.
11:40 Cardio or weights?
11:41 Cardio over weights.
11:43 Big legs or big arms?
11:44 Big arms. My legs will never be big.
11:46 Biggest compliment, jacked, ripped, cut, or swole?
11:49 I want to go with swole.
11:50 If you could work out with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?
11:53 Mike Tyson, for sure.
11:55 Thank y'all for being here. I got a day to get to. That's my time.
12:01 (upbeat music)
12:06 (upbeat music)
