00:03 Imagine waking up one morning and finding out that only 5 out of 100 of your closest
00:07 relatives are still around.
00:09 Heartbreaking, isn't it?
00:11 This is the grim reality Malayan tigers have faced since the 1950s.
00:16 As recent as 70 years ago, there were an estimated 3,000 Malayan tigers throughout the peninsula.
00:21 Today, only 150 or 5% remain due to loss of habitat and poaching.
00:27 In 2009, the government rolled out the National Tiger Conservation Action Plan to protect
00:32 the animal that is central to Malaysia's identity.
00:36 More recently, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took it a notch higher by announcing stronger
00:40 measures to protect the critically endangered species.
00:43 The measures, which include the expansion of protected areas and increased enforcement,
00:48 are part of the 12th Malaysian Plan midterm review.
00:51 Christopher Wong from WWF Malaysia says the initiative will provide a boost to the survival
00:56 of the Malayan tiger.
00:59 What's even more encouraging is the government's commitment to cracking down on wildlife crimes,
01:04 expanding protected areas, and getting local communities involved.
01:08 This approach doesn't just benefit the Malayan tigers, but also other endangered animals
01:13 that share the same home as the Malayan tiger.
01:16 Wong, who leads WWF's Tiger Conservation Program, also lauded Putrajaya's move to
01:21 encourage small businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices.
01:25 It is indicative of a well-rounded approach to conservation, showing that they understand
01:31 the importance of both nature and economic growth.
01:35 Pertubuhan Pelindung Kazanah Alam President Damien Tanem Divian wants the Wildlife and
01:39 National Parks Department, or Perhilitan, to be further empowered.
01:43 So since Perhilitan is a federal agency under NRECC, the state is not obligated to listen
01:51 to them in land-related matters.
01:54 The government has to empower Jabatan Perhilitan Malaysia, which is the Wildlife and Game Department,
02:01 to have powers to object when areas which are critical to tigers and all other protected
02:08 species in Malaysia are tied for development.
02:14 With the government's renewed commitment, hope burns bright for the survival of the
02:18 Malayan tiger.
