00:00 Welcome back to the Docs Diagnosis presented by Centrist Photo Credit Union.
00:03 I'm Travis Justice.
00:04 He's Dr. Rob Zaviska.
00:05 Yesterday, it was all sunshine and roses with the run blocking by the offensive line.
00:11 Today, wilted roses with the pass blocking because, let's be honest, it was brutal.
00:16 The Huskers gave up three sacks on Saturday.
00:18 And it was.
00:19 It was kind of a tale of two offenses.
00:21 And it was hard for me to give the offensive line even a real consistent grade because
00:28 it was very all or nothing in terms of what they did in the game yesterday.
00:32 Well, here's the deal, Rob.
00:33 If it doesn't get better, Harburg is going to not make it the rest of the season if he
00:37 keeps taking the beating.
00:38 Well, and that's the thing.
00:39 I mean, we're already limited numbers at quarterback.
00:41 So, we're going to have to clean up some of this stuff.
00:43 So, right here what we've got, it's nothing too crazy.
00:48 So, you've got a four down lineman in front.
00:51 Off the screen here, you can't see, there's two linebackers.
00:54 Both linebackers are going to blitz on this play.
00:57 Once those linebackers see Harburg's going to do a little bit of a read fake back here
01:01 with the running back.
01:03 Once the linebackers see that run fake, both of them are going to come on a blitz.
01:08 Now, Ethan Piper here at left guard, I kind of talked Piper up on the run blocking.
01:13 This is one thing where he just has to basically kind of stay a little bit more in tune to
01:18 that overall field vision.
01:20 He can't lock in on any one thing.
01:23 And what ends up happening, he and the center.
01:25 Now, I say Ethan, it might be Ben Scott as well too.
01:29 But these two guys got to keep their eyes up here.
01:32 They got to block the down guy.
01:34 They got to have, both of them have to have their eyes on the linebacker.
01:37 You're going to see both of them stay on this down guy and both of them kind of bring their
01:41 eyes out to the outside.
01:44 Both of them end up missing that linebacker blitz.
01:49 And right there, this is where you're looking here.
01:52 Both of these guys, you got Ethan, you got Ben Scott right here.
01:56 They're doing a good job.
01:57 They got the down guy.
01:59 I understand the guard doesn't want to leave his tackle completely on an island here.
02:03 Corcoran's had some issues singling up with a lot of pass rushers early in the season
02:08 thus far.
02:10 I understand the fact that he doesn't want to leave his tackle on an island.
02:14 It doesn't mean you can't, this guy is going to be coming here.
02:19 You can't leave that guy completely alone here and you'll see what happens.
02:23 You got a little delayed blitz.
02:25 He comes in right behind the center and the guard, gets the hit on Harburg, does the jujitsu
02:31 throw down there.
02:32 That would have been probably a four point take down in freestyle wrestling.
02:39 But I mean, those are the kind of hits that are, that was a blockable blitz and that was
02:44 one they missed.
02:45 So now on this one, this is another, this is one of the other sacks in the game.
02:50 This one is a play action and what you're going to see is Ben Scott here at center.
02:55 He's going to pull with the run fake.
02:58 You got Henry Lutovsky, pride of Mount Pleasant, Iowa at right guard.
03:02 He's got to block this guy.
03:03 Now this guy is going to see that center pull and he's going to come hard inside to try
03:09 and get in that gap where the center pulls.
03:12 He's got to take a really flat angle to get this guy.
03:16 Now I understand he wants to sell the run fake, but he has to understand the scheme
03:20 that he's losing that inside guy on this pull here and has to really maintain inside protection
03:28 on this play.
03:29 You'll see 93 gets past him to the inside, gets the pressure on the quarterback, Harburg
03:35 gets hit.
03:36 And it's multiple guys here.
03:38 I mean, it's not just Lutovsky that gets hit.
03:41 He got three guys converging on Harburg all at the same time.
03:46 He was, I mean, that boat was dead in the water from the snap.
03:51 But when you're looking at the offensive line, the main point of protection, you got to protect
03:56 inside out and you give up that inside rush.
04:00 It's an instant collapse of the pocket.
04:02 You can have some outside rushers getting a little bit of pressure, but if you've got
04:06 the inside protected, he can step up, it buys you a split second of time to maybe get a
04:13 dump pass off, throw the ball away, whatever.
04:17 You give it up inside there, that play's dead.
04:22 And one thing can be for sure is Nebraska is going to face a lot bigger pressure and
04:26 better pressure against Michigan coming up this weekend.
04:28 Well, and that's the thing.
04:31 We talked about this last year with the pass rush early in the season where Nebraska's
04:35 tackles got exposed a lot last year.
04:39 Teams are looking at this.
04:40 Good teams are looking at this.
04:41 They know what Nebraska's weaknesses are on the offensive line.
04:46 And so some of the stuff that we've talked about where that tackle spot hasn't maybe
04:50 been really solidified yet in terms of kind of that continued development that you want
04:57 to see.
04:58 But you're seeing some stuff with the play action on the inside as well, too, that teams
05:02 are going to be looking to exploit also.
05:04 So things to be watching as we do get into the teeth of the schedule.
05:08 And we'll go a lot more in-depth about Michigan on the DocTalk Podcast.
05:11 If you haven't listened to it, just check it out right here on YouTube.
