Shoplifting hotspots identified as cases rise by 25% in twelve months

Shoplifting is on the rise by up to 25% year on year with retailers pleading with the police and the government to do more to tackle the problem. But the latest data from CrimeRate suggests some areas are suffering worse than others. Here's what we know about the latest increase in shoplifting statistics.

00:16 website, the cities worst affected by shoplifting are Westminster, Middlesbrough and Nottingham
00:21 with crime rates of 14, 12 and 12 per 1,000 residents respectively. The most dangerous
00:28 region for shoplifting is Nottinghamshire which recorded a shoplifting rate of 9 offences
00:32 per 1,000 people last year. The Association of Convenience Stores chief executive called
00:38 for police action saying these are not victimless crimes and they must be investigated to bring
00:43 the most prolific offenders to justice. Katie Bourne, the Association of Police and Crime
00:48 Commissioners lead for business and retail crime said PCCs are working at a national
00:52 level to improve the police response. She said "I completely understand the sector's
00:56 frustration and their concerns for their members.
