In this editorial episode, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses the ongoing violence in Manipur. Today, hundreds of students in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, took to the streets to protest against the brutal murder of two underage students, presumably by armed individuals, and demanded justice for the victims.
The students attempted to march towards the residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, but security forces used tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the crowd, resulting in several students getting injured. They were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.
This outrage occurred after images of the two students' lifeless bodies became viral on social media, shortly after mobile internet services were restored in the state following a nearly five-month ban. These two students had gone missing on July 6 during a period of ethnic conflict in the state, and it is suspected that they were killed.
The photographs depict the two students, a 17-year-old girl and a boy of the same age, sitting in the grassy area of what seems to be an improvised jungle camp of an armed group. The girl is seen wearing a white t-shirt, while the boy, carrying a backpack and wearing a checked shirt, is gazing ahead. In the background, two men holding guns are clearly visible. In the subsequent picture, their lifeless bodies are seen lying on the ground.
There are also investigations underway regarding allegations of rape prior to the minors' murders, according to sources informed by NDTV.
Meanwhile, the Manipur government has urged the public to exercise restraint and allow the authorities to conduct an investigation into the kidnapping and murder of the two students. In a statement issued by Chief Minister N Biren Singh's office late on Monday night, it was announced that the case has already been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

00:00 Namaskar.
00:01 Welcome to another episode of Editorial.
00:04 A lot of you all, a lot of my viewers wrote to me asking me for updates on Manipur.
00:10 In fact, my apologies to my viewers.
00:13 I should have done this long, long back.
00:16 I didn't.
00:17 So I'm going to give you updates on Manipur.
00:19 I'm going to give you updates from where I left, that is in August.
00:22 From August till now, what all has happened, I'm going to give it, I'm going to give those
00:26 updates to you in this editorial.
00:28 That's what I'm going to do today.
00:30 Let's get right into the show.
00:34 Okay, the way I'm going to go about it is, first, from August to September, I'm going
00:42 to take you through some headlines, which gives you an idea of the crimes that happened
00:47 during this last one month.
00:49 Number one, post which what I'm going to do is, I'm going to get into some specifics,
00:56 what the Supreme Court had to say, what were the flaws, what were the lapses, so on and
01:01 so forth.
01:02 After which, we will join the information, we will club this information and form a conclusion
01:08 as to what is happening in Manipur till now and what is that we expect as people of this
01:14 country, citizens of this country, what we expect the government should be doing.
01:19 So this is how we will do our editorial.
01:22 And let's get into the first segment of the editorial.
01:27 Now I will start with where I had left.
01:30 The last report I had done in your channel was, I had spoken to you about Supreme Court
01:36 shifting 27 CBI cases, including crime against women to Assam.
01:41 I had done this report.
01:43 This report was on 25th of August.
01:45 Now let me go to the second report.
01:47 The second report, 1st of September was 6 feared killed as gun battle enters the third
01:54 day.
01:55 This was on the 1st of September.
01:57 Now let me go to the next report on the 4th of September.
02:01 UN experts alarmed by continuing abuse in Manipur.
02:08 Now let me go to the 4th.
02:10 Manipur fresh violence in Palel, death toll rises, more than 50 people injured in gun
02:18 fights.
02:19 This was on the 9th of September.
02:21 Now let's come to the 12th of September.
02:23 12th of September is Manipur violence, 3 people from Kukki Zoo community reportedly killed
02:31 in ambush by armed miscreants.
02:34 This was on the 12th of September.
02:36 Now let's come to the 15th of September, 175, this is a very important report, 175 killed
02:44 and 1100 injured in 4 months of Manipur violence.
02:51 This was on the 15th of September.
02:53 Now let's come to 16th of September, 5 cases of crime against women during Manipur violence
02:58 handed over to CBI.
03:01 Days after police officer killed in Manipur, army soldier was found dead.
03:06 This was on 18th September.
03:08 And now let me come to my last, that is Manipur violence, mob tries to storm police station
03:13 over arrest of 5 youth and curfew imposed.
03:17 This is the report of 21st of September.
03:20 So this is broadly, this broadly gives you what all were happening.
03:25 Not that this covers everything that happened in Manipur, not that it covers everything
03:28 that happened in Manipur, but this is what I gathered in the last one month.
03:33 These were the reports that I gathered in the last month, which I wanted to present
03:36 to you.
03:37 Now let me go into another important aspect.
03:39 Like I told you, one of the most important reports in this, what I just spoke to you
03:43 about is that 175 people till date has died in Manipur.
03:47 175 people have been killed in Manipur.
03:50 Let me rephrase it.
03:51 And 1100 people are injured.
03:55 This is the status and the count continues.
03:59 This is the unfortunate part.
04:01 Now let me tell you the second part.
04:06 You see, let us talk about some of the lapses that has happened.
04:09 Now I am not saying this, the Supreme Court is saying this.
04:12 The Supreme Court said, slammed the state machinery in Manipur over the lapses and delay
04:18 in filing FIR and investigating cases of violence that have been reported since May 3rd.
04:25 Look at the Manipur government status report submitted in the court shows glaring errors
04:30 in the FIRs that were filed and the lapses in investigation.
04:34 The government submitted that 6523 FIRs were filed in Manipur from May 3rd when the violence
04:41 erupted to July 3rd.
04:43 For this, 11 of them are related to sexual violence against women.
04:47 Now this is what the story is.
04:50 The court says, boss, there are huge lapses in your FIR.
04:53 Now let me tell you what are the lapses that the court found in the FIR.
04:57 The lapses that the court found in the FIR is one is serious offenses missing from the
05:01 FIRs.
05:02 You know, omit serious crimes that the person has committed.
05:06 So the FIR becomes weak.
05:09 So that's the way to help a culprit.
05:11 Secondly, they spoke about wrong sections on the FIR.
05:15 Wrong sections on the FIR again, you make the sections weaker and saving the culprits.
05:23 I will go more.
05:25 Lack of action against police identified people.
05:28 People there were absolute lack of action against police who have not performed their
05:33 duties the way they should have.
05:35 People who have been involved in violence.
05:37 These were some of the lapses that the court found.
05:40 And these were some of the lapses that the court spoke about.
05:42 Now hearing in the court, Central Government assured the Supreme Court that the Levin case
05:48 identified as cases of violence against women and children would be transferred to CBI for
05:53 investigation as far as recommendation of the state government is concerned.
05:56 However, Petitioner pointed out before the court that both the Kuki and the Methi community
06:02 have given examples of cases of assault against women and children which have not been flagged
06:07 in the status report.
06:08 While the government says, okay, we will hand over everything to Assam, hand over everything
06:12 to CBI, all that is happening, but case you will not flag off, you are not showing the
06:17 cases where there have been assault against Kuki women, Methi women, Methi children, Kuki
06:23 children, you have not even flagged it off.
06:26 So what are you talking about?
06:29 So I mean, everything, everything that can go wrong, everything that can go wrong has
06:36 gone wrong.
06:37 Now let us understand what are we talking here.
06:40 You see, we are talking about clear administrative flaws.
06:47 We are talking about clear lack of will to act against the culprit.
06:54 We are talking about absolute take it easy attitude towards culprits, towards rioters.
07:02 Who are promoting these rioters?
07:04 Who are promoting these people who are creating violence?
07:06 And why are they promoting it?
07:09 Why are actions not taken?
07:11 The most important point is, this happened in May, June, July, August, September, fifth
07:20 month.
07:22 The violence just does not seem to be stopping.
07:25 I spoke to you about almost the whole of September.
07:29 Almost every second day there are violence and these are reported violence.
07:32 God knows how many violences are not reported.
07:34 I will come to the reporting part.
07:37 So every day there seems to be violence.
07:39 You know, but what has not changed?
07:41 The Chief Minister has not changed.
07:43 The person who is heading the administration, who clearly seems to have failed in delivering
07:49 his duties, is still sitting there.
07:52 That's the first question I want to ask.
07:54 The second question I want to ask is to Supreme Court.
07:57 You see, the Supreme Court, the Honorable Supreme Court seems to be giving a lot of
08:04 sound bites, making a lot of statements.
08:07 But when it comes to actual delivery, I don't think much is happening from the Supreme Court
08:12 end.
08:13 Because this was the same Supreme Court who said that if you don't act, we will act.
08:19 What is the Supreme Court waiting for?
08:22 Every day, every day of the month, there is some violence or another.
08:29 Every day of the month, act.
08:34 The government is not acting.
08:35 Clearly the government is not acting.
08:36 The government is not willing to change the Chief Minister.
08:39 Clearly the government is not acting.
08:40 Neither is the central government, the Home Ministry doing anything or the Chief Minister
08:46 doing anything.
08:47 Nothing has changed.
08:49 Everybody is as is.
08:52 So what more is the Supreme Court waiting for?
08:57 How many more lives should be lost before the Supreme Court acts?
09:02 What more does the Supreme Court need?
09:05 Now, this is the point I wanted to make.
09:08 The last point before I end is, you see, it is so sad, isn't it?
09:13 It is so sad.
09:14 The police doesn't have time to file FIRs, sections are weak, the crimes are not mentioned,
09:24 so on and so forth.
09:25 Some FIRs are not mentioned, some FIRs are not even heard of, some crimes just happened,
09:30 nobody takes cognizance to that.
09:31 This is all what is said.
09:33 But the fact is, they have enough time, effort to file a FIR against Editors Guild on Manipur
09:43 report.
09:44 They have time and energy to file a FIR against Editors Guild.
09:48 This surprises me.
09:51 Why is this government always on punishing the messenger instead of punishing the perpetrator?
10:00 Why is this government doing it?
10:02 These are questions that I wanted to ask and this is the update, the way I see it.
10:07 Like I said, most of these I have gathered from various newspapers, various reports that
10:14 I could, I and my team could research on and this is what I wanted to tell you.
10:21 But what I see is very disturbing.
10:24 What I see is very depressing.
10:28 I hope, I pray that somebody either in the Supreme Court or in the government takes some
10:36 cognizance to this and put an end to this violence.
10:40 Our people are dying.
10:42 Our people are suffering.
10:45 1100 people injured, 175 died, killed.
10:53 What more will it take us to act?
10:56 Till I see you next time, that's tomorrow at 10 pm.
11:00 Namaskar.
11:01 Sorry, it is not tomorrow at 10 pm.
11:03 I am sorry.
