“It’s important to have a sense of self and what you stand for and what you believe in, why you're doing what you’re doing because creative work is very difficult,” the musician says. In this exclusive shoot and sit-down interview, we discovered that Eric Nam is a natural not just in front of the camera, but with people, too.

00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:03 Music was always a passion.
00:22 I loved music, and I loved singing.
00:25 But there were a couple of things
00:28 that weren't in my favor.
00:29 First, my parents were like, there's no way.
00:31 A, you're not a good singer.
00:32 B, no Asian kid becomes a singer.
00:36 And also, it's like, in the States,
00:38 you don't see Asian-American pop stars.
00:44 And so I think you have to be able to see
00:47 what you want to become to dream that dream in many ways.
00:51 If you don't see yourself represented,
00:53 how do you think like, oh, I can do that?
00:57 Singing was something that I always grew up doing.
00:59 As much as my parents were like, you're not good,
01:01 I think it was to discourage me from pursuing the path,
01:03 because they were so scared of the path.
01:06 And then in terms of fashion, I think
01:08 I've just become a lot more experimental, and fluid,
01:11 and comfortable just trying everything.
01:14 Even if it looks kind of crazy on the rack,
01:17 try it on and try to make it my own, and alter it,
01:20 and not being afraid to alter things,
01:22 knowing that there actually are no rules to fashion,
01:26 I don't think.
01:27 It's just, do you care what other people think or not?
01:31 If you don't really care that much,
01:33 then you can wear whatever you want.
01:35 Music was always around.
01:40 I just don't think I ever saw myself
01:42 really doing what I do now,
01:45 because it seemed so distant and impossible.
