00:00 Box as you vote for the rules. Obey my commands at all times.
00:04 Defend yourselves at all times.
00:06 Good luck to you both. Touch gloves. Back to the trainers.
00:08 I understand that.
00:10 So you have to speak to the board.
00:12 Speak to the board.
00:14 Seconds out. Round one.
00:22 [BELL RINGS]
00:24 Okay, welcome fight fans.
00:33 We're here for a night of boxing at Bolton Stadium.
00:36 I'm Aki Karim. I'm joined by Stephen "Swifty" Smith.
00:39 And Swifty, we've got a pro debut here for Rio Pierre,
00:43 who's from Liverpool.
00:45 Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing him in action,
00:47 to be honest with you, and seeing how well he settles into the pro game.
00:51 Now he boxes out of Golden Gloves, not too far from or in Toxteth,
00:57 and he had a really good amateur career.
00:59 And I'm excited to watch him box.
01:01 I've never seen him box up close and personal,
01:03 so I always love watching the kids come in and seeing how they get on.
01:06 Definitely, and it's good to see he's in with someone
01:11 who's obviously a crafty opponent, he's switched it already,
01:14 and he's going to try and show him something he hasn't seen before,
01:17 obviously being his debut, bring something new to the table for him,
01:21 and he's going to try and frustrate him and see what he can do,
01:24 and maybe try and play on his nerves a little bit.
01:26 But hopefully he settles well and he shows the talent and ability he's got.
01:31 Now, Jon Spencer, he's no pushover, really.
01:34 If he sees an opportunity, he will go for it.
01:36 I have seen him throw some big, looping shots before,
01:38 and you've got to be switched on, you know better than anyone.
01:41 You can't take your eye off the ball, even when you're fighting road men, so to speak.
01:45 These so-called journeymen, they come out and they have a look,
01:49 and they know in their own heads early whether they can win the fight.
01:52 So would it be in a debut, and just thinking, "I'm going to land early,
01:54 "I'm going to try and aim," playing his nerves, playing the unknown a little bit.
01:57 And he's letting his hands go early, Spencer,
01:59 you can see the power he's putting in the shots.
02:01 He wants to try and put a dent in him early
02:03 and make him think that it's the wrong game for him.
02:05 But it'll be interesting to see how he settles.
02:07 Is there something psychological where you see...
02:09 See, there's the right hand, the right hand, the looping right hand.
02:11 And there's a left hook as well.
02:13 He's wanting to know it's a different game now,
02:15 it's the pros, welcome to the pros, so to speak.
02:17 Yeah, I've seen him spring that shot quite a few times now.
02:20 There might be something psychological as well,
02:22 you know when you see a young kid in front of you,
02:24 you might think, "I'll just test him out a little bit."
02:26 Definitely, no. At the end of the day, again, I keep saying the unknown,
02:30 nobody knows how he's going to react,
02:32 you haven't seen him as a pro yet, you know what I mean?
02:34 So what he does, we're all going to learn,
02:37 and we're all going to see, but obviously Spencer's hoping
02:39 that if he makes a dent in him, he might not want to know.
02:41 What would you be advising him to do then at the minute?
02:49 Just sort of get the jab working, you know, just solid fundamentals?
02:52 Exactly that, just stick to your basics,
02:55 you're known as a top prospect for a reason,
02:58 it's boxing at the end of the day,
03:00 you've had a great career by doing what you do best,
03:04 stick to it, don't get in and think, "Oh, it's me pro debut,
03:07 "I've got to show people how good I am,
03:09 "I've got to play up to the hype."
03:11 Just go and get the fight, go in, do the basics,
03:13 do the fundamentals, stick to what you're good at,
03:15 and I'm sure you'll come through.
03:23 We're approaching the bell, there we go,
03:25 so the first round in his professional career,
03:28 and he took a few shots, but, you know,
03:30 it's one in the bag, as they say.
03:32 Yeah, and I hope to see that it wakes him up a little bit
03:35 and he just switches on and becomes a little bit more sharp
03:39 and more aware of the shots coming at him,
03:41 and then lets his hands go.
03:52 We've got to start today.
03:54 Get in the next one.
04:06 Ten seconds, go!
04:16 Seconds out.
04:21 Round two!
04:23 Okay, and we go to round number two.
04:27 Those of you just joining us, thank you,
04:30 we're at Bolton Stadium here, it's GSW's first professional show
04:34 in partnership with BBTV, we've got Rio Pierre in there
04:37 making his pro debut, and I'm joined by none other than
04:41 Stephen "Swifty" Smith, who are also going to be joined
04:43 at some point in the very near future by Jack Bateson,
04:46 so we've got some real good boxing people here
04:49 to talk us through this.
04:51 And he's looking a bit more positive coming into this round,
04:55 isn't he, Stephen?
04:57 He's come out looking like he means business,
04:58 but he's still getting caught, he's still got his head
05:00 a little bit high from me, I think there's a lot for him to learn,
05:02 you know, again, it's his pro debut, so we all have to learn
05:05 from there, but he's definitely showing a few flaws here,
05:09 he's going to have to learn on the job here,
05:12 because he's got a man in front of him that looks confident
05:14 he can win.
05:17 And Spencer's switching a little bit as well,
05:21 just trying to give him a different look.
05:23 I think he fancies this, you know.
05:25 He looks that way, he looks confident for the record he's got,
05:30 he's got a lot of confidence here, I think he's picking his moments
05:34 against a debutant and knows that he can jump on him a little bit.
05:38 And it's only four rounds, so he can't afford to go behind,
05:45 can he, because...
05:47 Oh, that's a good right hand there, back.
05:50 Oh, a little interlude there, guys, we were just getting on
05:55 with the game, we're just getting on with the game,
05:57 we're just getting on with the game,
05:59 we're just getting on with the game,
06:01 we're just getting on with the game,
06:03 we're just getting on with the game,
06:05 we're just getting on with the game,
06:07 we're just getting on with the game,
06:09 we're just getting on with the game,
06:11 we're just getting on with the game,
06:13 we're just getting on with the game,
06:15 we're just getting on with the game,
06:17 we're just getting on with the game,
06:19 we're just getting on with the game,
06:21 we're just getting on with the game.
06:23 - Yeah, that's a good interlude there, guys,
06:25 we were just getting all set up here,
06:27 so you can see us on the camera,
06:29 not that we want to be on the camera,
06:31 but yeah, Rico Pierre in the second round here
06:33 of his professional debut,
06:35 and you can actually hear him shouting to his corner.
06:37 - Yeah, his corner, getting instructions across to him,
06:39 and he's agreeing, but he's got to switch on now,
06:41 he's got to start putting his foot on the gas a little bit,
06:43 sometimes when it's not going well,
06:45 it's best just make it a fight and get the fight won.
06:47 - Yeah, he's playing to instructions,
06:49 but when the lads land on having success in a four-round fight,
06:51 as you said, it hasn't really got the time
06:53 to make suitable adjustments,
06:55 so sometimes you've got to just put your foot on the floor
06:58 and start landing.
07:00 - And there's that right hand again.
07:03 He's throwing it quite short, though, isn't he, Spence?
07:06 He normally loops it, but actually he's coming quite short with it.
07:09 - Yeah, I don't want to be too harsh on him because it's his debut,
07:15 I don't like this, he's talking to his corner,
07:17 if it was through his control, I'd agree with him,
07:20 but he's getting hit with shots, that's what I'm saying,
07:22 so he's got a lot of lane on that ball.
07:24 Again, being his debut, I'm sure he will.
07:26 - Now, I don't know how you're scoring this at the minute,
07:29 but that round, you could even go with Spence, couldn't you?
07:31 - Yeah, you could, the cleaner shots.
07:33 Difficult not to.
07:37 [music]
07:41 [music]
07:45 [music]
08:13 - Ten seconds, corners.
08:15 Seconds out.
08:20 Round three.
08:23 [bell ringing]
08:25 - OK, round number three here.
08:33 Rio Pierre in his professional debut,
08:35 and he's not having it all his own way.
08:38 What would you be saying to him?
08:40 If you had him in the corner there, Steve, what would you be saying to him?
08:43 - Listen to what you're good at, stick to the basics,
08:46 back your man up, you've got a lot more ability than your opponent,
08:50 go and show it, go and stick, as I said before,
08:53 the better fundamentals are with you, go and show it,
08:56 stick to your basics, but back your man up and land your shots.
08:59 - Now, I don't want to say it was a long, long time ago,
09:02 but when you had your pro debut, was it the most nerve-wracking?
09:06 Obviously, you fought at title level,
09:08 but was that actually the most nerve-wracking?
09:11 Because people say that is often the most nerve-wracking experience.
09:14 - It's strange, it's a bit of both,
09:17 it's something you've been looking forward to for as long as you can remember,
09:21 so it's a lot of excitement, but it is also nerves,
09:24 you don't want to be that person who slips up on his debut,
09:26 so you do have a bit of both, but it was a lot more excitement with me
09:30 and the people who come to watch me,
09:32 I couldn't wait to get in there and get the job done,
09:34 but again, I remember, I had Georgie Vaughan in the corner with me
09:37 and Georgie was just saying, "Look, stick to what you've got there,
09:40 "hit him up the middle, round the sides,
09:42 "just keep picking your spots and landing solid shots
09:45 "and letting them know you're in there with them."
09:47 - Now, Rio has had his moments, but Spencer is,
09:49 he's landed the jab now as well,
09:51 and he's actually getting out of range well,
09:54 so it'll be interesting to see how the scoring referee is scoring the fight.
09:59 - I think Rio's got a tight land, solid shot,
10:01 now I'll put a dent in him because it looks like Spencer's growing in confidence,
10:04 he's letting his hands go a lot more now,
10:07 so I think Rio's got to try and put a dent in him and really dig his shots in.
10:11 - You know, when I saw this one on paper, in fact, with all of them,
10:14 we were saying at the beginning with Ali there
10:16 that they've all got to have their wits about them
10:18 because, yes, they're fighting against lads who they're expected to beat,
10:21 but they're all, this being well matched,
10:23 they're all matched competitively here.
10:26 And that's what you want to see in a small-old show, isn't it?
10:28 - Definitely, you want value for money, and I think the fans are getting that.
10:32 - Spencer's smiling in there, he's really warming up,
10:39 and Rio's trying to cut the ring down now and get on the front foot,
10:41 I think he's been told he needs to press the action a bit.
10:44 - Yeah, I think that Spencer's using experience there,
10:47 look, he's trying to talk to him and getting his head a little bit,
10:50 it's a lot different to the amateurs' base,
10:52 and I think Rio's learning that a lot tonight.
10:54 - That was a good little spell for him, he did manage to get the body shot in there as well.
11:01 That's much better signs from him.
11:04 That's a good right hand to the body.
11:12 It's a kind of round of two halves,
11:20 John got off, started off really well,
11:22 and Rio's just sort of come back into it at the end of the round.
11:24 - I felt Spencer took his foot off the gas a lot there.
11:30 - Yeah, he's got a lot of power.
11:33 - Yeah.
11:36 - That's a good one.
11:39 [MUSIC]
11:42 [MUSIC]
11:45 [MUSIC]
11:47 [MUSIC]
11:53 [MUSIC]
11:59 [MUSIC]
12:05 [MUSIC]
12:12 [MUSIC]
12:14 [MUSIC]
12:20 [BELL RINGING]
12:25 - Okay, fourth and final round,
12:27 Rio Pierre in his professional debut,
12:29 he boxes out of the Golden Gloves gym,
12:31 he's in there with John Spencer, who's making it difficult for him,
12:33 and he's certainly been tested.
12:35 So it could be all to play for in this last round.
12:37 - Yeah, I think it definitely is.
12:39 It won't be how Rio's envisioned the fight, you know.
12:41 You go through your debut many times in your head,
12:43 and it's always perfect and how you want,
12:46 and I don't think he'll have seen himself stand enough in the last round.
12:49 Gotta go out and win it, and it's nothing that way.
12:52 The minute he's spent his box really well,
12:54 and he's made the fight a bit poor,
12:56 you know, in the long run it could be a really good thing for Rio,
12:59 you know, for learning purposes.
13:01 - And he's pressing the action a bit more now,
13:03 he got him with a good body shot,
13:04 he's definitely been told,
13:05 "Come out here and stamp your authority on this round
13:07 and get it in the bag."
13:09 You can see potential in Rio, though, can't you?
13:18 He's nice and compact, he does move well.
13:20 - Yeah, there's been a lot spoken of him,
13:25 about him turning professional with the ability he's got.
13:28 But ability's one thing, you've gotta go and do it,
13:31 and this corner will be pushing him now to make sure he goes out
13:34 and gets a winning start.
13:36 He's got a lot of things to work on to go back to.
13:39 - I think this is one of the best performances I've seen
13:44 of Jonny as well, actually,
13:45 he's picking some nice clean shots.
13:47 It's been a very watchable fight, actually,
13:49 it's been a good fight,
13:50 and hopefully this is a sign of things to come,
13:51 everything's well matched.
13:52 - Yeah, he's really used his experience well, Spencer,
13:55 you see it with a lot of them,
13:57 where they're experienced pros and they're going round the shows,
14:00 a lot of them make a decision early
14:02 whether they're gonna be in the fight or not,
14:04 and I think when he came out he thought
14:05 he was gonna throw a few big solid shots,
14:07 I'll see what reaction I get,
14:08 and when he landed, he thought, you know what,
14:10 I can win this, and he's gone out to win this fight.
14:13 - He's got that look in his eyes as well,
14:14 and actually he's catching it with some nice
14:16 sort of catch and shoot shots,
14:17 and also, he even threw a check left hook there,
14:19 he's definitely confident,
14:21 and that's a good left hook there.
14:23 I think Rio needs a big finish this round, doesn't he?
14:25 - He definitely does, yeah, Spencer's landing it well.
14:28 - Yeah, and we are getting that from him now.
14:30 Good action here at the end of the fourth round.
14:33 - When you've got a man in front of you with confidence
14:47 like this where you know he's gonna let his hands go,
14:49 I'd like to see Rio fighting a little bit more,
14:51 and just seeing what he draws from Spencer,
14:53 and then using his class to pick his counters,
14:55 it's there to do, 'cause you can see, as I said,
14:57 Spencer is letting his hands go,
14:59 and you can maybe feint and draw that big right hand
15:01 from him, make him miss, and then you've got him exposed
15:03 then to land yourself.
15:04 - He's quite a slippery target, isn't he, John, as well?
15:06 He knows how to do the fullie shell, he's dancing,
15:08 he's using the ropes to his advantage.
15:10 - That's what I'm saying, where he's a good pro,
15:12 and he's got a good defense anyway.
15:14 You've gotta open up fights like that,
15:15 so when you've got one letting his hands go,
15:17 open him up with feints, and then I'm sure
15:19 he'll have a lot more success, but again,
15:20 it's all to learn for going forward.
15:22 It's only his debut, he's still a baby in the game,
15:24 so a lot to work on going forward.
15:27 - Well, there you have it, guys.
15:28 The first fight of the evening.
15:31 Rio Pierre in there with John Spencer.
15:34 Thoroughly competitive fight, a good watch,
15:37 and we're gonna go to our scoring ref for the decision.
15:42 It could go any way, do you think?
15:44 - Yeah, yeah, both fights had the moments in it
15:46 and had success, but I think it was more probably,
15:50 without being disrespectful, it was more surprising to us,
15:52 the quality of Spencer.
15:54 I think no one expected it.
15:55 You look at his record, and you think,
15:57 "Oh, it's a walkover," but a really well-matched fight,
16:00 and it was interesting to see it unfold.
16:04 - Yeah, and I think Rio will have learned a lot from that.
16:09 - Yeah, I'm interested to see the scores.
16:10 - Yeah, it will be interesting.
16:11 Let's have a look.
16:13 - Ladies and gentlemen, will you please have a big round
16:18 of applause for both of our boxers?
16:22 (audience applauding)
16:24 After four rounds of action, we know who our referee
16:27 and the top scorer are.
16:29 We've reached 39 points of 38.
16:32 In favour of your winner, John Spencer!
16:38 (audience applauding)
16:40 Ladies and gentlemen, please, a big round of applause.
