Max Abernethy wins River Ness 10k 2023
Transcript
00:00 30 minutes 10 unofficially, so that's a big PB.
00:04 No, I'm very pleased with that.
00:06 I thought the sub-party might have been on with how Clyde Loughran took out the start.
00:10 I kind of just sat in for the first miler, so they went for a miler.
00:13 And then an early marshall kind of caught me up and it was just me neck and neck for pretty much the entire race.
00:20 I just broke away just before the bridge and just didn't look back in case he thought I was struggling.
00:27 You had a fair 21 seconds.
00:30 No, it didn't feel like that at all.
00:33 It felt like he was right on my neck the entire way.
00:35 No, I'm absolutely delighted.
00:37 The crowd keeps you going the last 400 metres.
00:41 So it just takes a flat then to start the race.
00:44 So Loughran took it out the very end.
00:46 Yeah, Loughran just went from the start, pushed it quite hard.
00:49 I just kind of sat in behind him for the first mile.
00:52 Then I kind of took a turn into the wind and then once we hit the downhill I kind of just went from there.
00:58 And Alistair Marshall came with you.
01:00 He came with me around, well he wasn't actually with us to start with.
01:03 He must have closed it for the last 4 or 5k.
01:07 And then we just split the entire way pretty much after that.
01:10 So you were together until the final mile then?
01:12 More or less, yeah.
01:14 So that's a fair chunk off your previous best.
01:18 I'm absolutely delighted to be honest.
01:20 So close to sub-30 but it'll come eventually.
01:23 It's even better to win this race.
01:25 I've been up here a few times and it's amazing to actually be able to win it.
01:30 Yeah, I mean how do you rate this amongst what you've done so far?
01:34 I would say it's definitely the best thing I've done.
01:36 It's an event I've always liked to come up to.
01:38 It's a 3 hour-ish, 2 hours and a half drive from Frisborough.
01:41 And it seems to be worth it every time I've had a PB, every time I've come up.
01:45 So the pressure's on next year then to defend your title.
01:48 Definitely, I'd love to be back.
01:51 So what's the plans now?
01:54 We're going to cross-country season now.
01:56 We've got the short course coming up in maybe 3 weeks time or something.
02:01 So we've got a bit of preparation before we go.
02:04 I think it's Bannock.
02:06 Hopefully we'll have a decent shift there.
02:09 Are you going to be there at all?
02:11 Cross-country championship?
02:13 We'll see if I like it. I'm not entirely sure after the National Cross.
02:17 Or road event?
02:19 No, to be honest, I think it's the last one for the season.
02:23 Getting a decent bit of prep for the Armagh 5k in February again.
02:26 That's a really good one.
02:28 But until then, it'll just be cross.
02:30 Very well done today. Congratulations.
