00:00 Hi everybody, this is Hondo Carpenter from Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation Las Vegas
00:06 Raiders Insider Podcast here at SoFi Stadium.
00:09 We're just moments ago, yet again, you saw the Raiders lose.
00:12 They fall to one and three.
00:15 The score was 24-17, but in fairness, it really wasn't that close.
00:19 Aiden O'Connell gets the start.
00:22 We got a lot to talk about tonight.
00:24 The Raiders were able to stay in the game despite seven sacks, multiple penalties, several
00:32 of them stupid, just stupid.
00:35 I'm not calling the players that committed them stupid, but they were stupid penalties.
00:41 Unforced errors, self-inflicted wounds, circular firing squad, poor coaching, lack of discipline.
00:48 You can add anything you want to add and it's probably going to be germane and fair.
00:53 So we got a lot to talk about.
00:54 I apologize for the noise.
00:55 Obviously, they're cleaning up the stadium here, but let's just dig right into a couple
01:00 of observations I want to make.
01:04 Earlier in the week, the Raiders were going to start Ryan Hoyer.
01:11 They made the decision to possibly go away from that.
01:15 I got a text early this morning.
01:17 This is Sunday, the day of the game.
01:19 It was early, early this morning when I got off the plane saying that we're going to see
01:24 some O'Connell.
01:26 I'm going to make a couple of statements.
01:28 You've had Aiden inactive for three games.
01:32 He wasn't your backup.
01:33 So he's not getting second reps, which is more reps, getting them ready.
01:39 So then Jimmy goes down and you start them.
01:41 Now, let me just say something to you.
01:44 I have no issue with Aiden O'Connell playing.
01:46 In fact, if you really want to know the truth, I think the kids showed us a lot that Jimmy
01:51 Garoppolo hasn't shown us.
01:53 Just being fair.
01:56 My issue is if you're going to have him in week four when Jimmy goes down, then he should
02:05 have been there all along getting more reps.
02:08 That's not on Aiden O'Connell.
02:09 That's on coaching.
02:11 And that's going to be a theme of this tonight is coaching.
02:16 So again, I have no issues whatsoever.
02:18 In fact, I get it.
02:19 I think it makes complete sense.
02:21 He's your guy of the future.
02:22 Brian Hart was brought in to keep this.
02:25 If Jimmy goes down in a game, which we've seen him a couple of times, or to be a coach
02:30 to Aiden.
02:33 But this is something we discussed in my question answer articles and in podcasts before the
02:37 season when you asked me who would be the number two.
02:41 But they decided to go with Aiden, which again, I don't have an issue with the decision to
02:47 go to Aiden.
02:48 If you want to know the truth, I think it's a smart move.
02:51 I think that was the right move to make.
02:54 So I am not sitting here with the benefit of 2020 backward vision saying starting Aiden
03:01 was a good move.
03:02 I'm here or wasn't a good move or was it doesn't matter.
03:05 I'm sitting here saying it was a good move, but then not having him prepared, not getting
03:10 him more reps after what you saw in preseason.
03:12 Now, listen, we know preseason isn't regular season, but you haven't had him ready.
03:16 He hasn't been out there.
03:17 He hasn't been getting the number two guy reps.
03:20 I just think that was a blunder.
03:22 Let's continue.
03:23 I asked Josh McDaniels after the game today, you have a worst offense today, four games,
03:30 21 games into your regime than you inherited when the previous guy got fired.
03:37 That's on Josh McDaniels.
03:38 You have $102 million offensive payroll, 102 million, ninth in the NFL.
03:46 By the way, last week I said third in the NFL.
03:48 I apologize.
03:49 It's corrected.
03:50 It's ninth in the NFL.
03:51 I apologize.
03:53 And you have a ninth in the NFL paid offense and forget that it was, well, it was just
04:00 a rookie.
04:01 Yeah, well, your rookie just scored more points than your veteran highly played quarterbacks
04:04 averaging.
04:07 I mean, it's, it's, I'm sorry.
04:13 No, it's not Josh McDaniels fault when Jerry Tillery yet again does something stupid, not
04:19 calling Jerry stupid.
04:23 He's not, but man, dumb penalty last year, smacking the ball out of a guy's hand, just
04:29 a brainless mistake.
04:32 And then today, the guy's clearly out of bounds and you pound them.
04:36 Let me just tell you, first of all, you know, you can't do that.
04:41 And you're the Raiders.
04:42 I mean, football IQ, come on now, come on.
04:48 Multiple penalty.
04:49 I mean, you, you got a defensive back lining up off sides.
04:52 Come on now.
04:54 That's like going to a store and you see a 400 pound person with a five gallon pail of
05:01 ice cream and a carton of cigs and 35 bags of chips, 85 pounds of sugar and a canister
05:11 of iced tea.
05:12 And they say, Oh, can I get a diet Coke?
05:14 Now why don't you just splurge?
05:18 Dumb, dumb, mistackles everywhere, everywhere, everywhere.
05:30 I'm sorry.
05:32 You expect that in Peewee football, you expect it in junior football, freshman football,
05:36 JV football, varsity football in high school, even in some colleges.
05:40 These are grown men getting paid a lot of money and you can't tackle somebody.
05:47 You're them.
05:48 You got your arms wrapped around them like a, and you can't make a tackle.
05:56 Give me a break.
05:57 Now is it Josh McDaniels, his fault that when a guy misses a tackle or Jerry Tiller?
06:03 Well, yes.
06:04 And here's why Nick Saban has told me this.
06:08 You've heard me say it.
06:09 And he said it to other people.
06:11 If you're allowing it, you're coaching it.
06:16 Last year we gave a ton of grace because of when they got here, whatever else, these are
06:20 the players that Josh McDaniels wanted.
06:25 And let me be very clear, because I had some people saying how much of this is on Ziegler.
06:32 You can look to Ziegler at the draft, but you got players here, Josh McDaniels wanted,
06:36 you got the ninth highest paid offense and you can't do crap.
06:41 Hey, can you imagine if you went to a Jenny Craig clinic and you, I was your instructor,
06:47 you'd be like, what the hell?
06:52 You got the ninth highest paid offense.
06:55 People around the league have called you an offensive genius.
06:59 Your lack of ability to produce is squarely on you.
07:06 You don't like all the mistakes.
07:08 These are the players you wanted.
07:11 These are the people you decided, I apologize.
07:13 Coach Staley's doing his press conference.
07:15 I'm going to keep going.
07:17 But this is what you wanted.
07:20 This is what you desire.
07:21 These are the things that you wanted.
07:23 Don't complain about the meal when you picked out the groceries.
07:27 I'm sorry.
07:29 No excuse.
07:31 This was a horrific performance, utterly embarrassing.
07:36 I said to Josh McDaniels afterward, we're going to put the video up.
07:39 I said, you know, you, this is, you have a worse offense than what you inherited.
07:43 Your team's lacking discipline, execution errors.
07:47 What do you and your staff do to fix it?
07:51 This is on this staff.
07:53 You wanted this.
07:55 You desired this.
07:57 And you got to fix it.
07:58 Now I'm going to say something that's going to be completely unpopular.
08:00 I get it.
08:01 I understand it.
08:02 I don't care.
08:03 My job is not to become popular with you.
08:04 I'm not looking for Christmas cards.
08:07 When you pay this defense, what you pay them.
08:10 Okay.
08:11 When you pay that defense and granted, you're all going to look at their paychecks.
08:15 They make a lot of money.
08:16 But comparative to other NFL teams, I think this defense has played relatively well.
08:23 Okay.
08:24 You, you, you give up your offense, gives up seven sacks.
08:27 You the turnovers, two fumbles and interception, and you're mad at your defense.
08:36 Now there were a lot of defensive mistakes.
08:38 I mentioned Tillery.
08:39 I mentioned the defensive back being offside, but I'm sorry.
08:43 I'm sorry.
08:44 But the money you invested, I mean, it's like buying a home in the worst neighborhood for
08:49 $35,000 and getting pissed when you can't sell it for 2 million.
08:53 When you put 3 million to improve it in, well, look at where you're at.
08:57 You get what you pay for.
08:59 Come on now.
09:01 I'm sorry.
09:02 It's on you.
09:04 And this is not a personal attack.
09:09 I'm not calling for anyone to lose their job.
09:11 Dear God.
09:12 We're four games into a 17 game season.
09:14 But what I am saying is the continue blunders.
09:19 This is all on leadership.
09:21 I had pages and notes today to talk about players.
09:25 Those of you that watch my post games, you know, that's what I do.
09:27 I go through and talk about players early on.
09:29 I thought Tyree early on, look good, disappeared, disappeared.
09:33 I don't even think he could have made it onto a milk carton because he would have disappeared
09:37 from that early on.
09:38 Even though it was best he's played early on.
09:42 But you got critical errors, critical mistakes.
09:46 That is all on coaching.
09:47 Every single cotton picking bit of it.
09:51 That's on coaching.
09:53 And so for the Raiders, here's the problem.
09:56 I expected you and I made my preseason prediction to be two and two.
09:59 I expected a loss today, predicted a loss today.
10:01 This doesn't surprise me.
10:03 This is not how the game went, but the scores relative to what I thought, thought it'd be
10:07 a one game score.
10:08 I think I predicted 24, 21 and it was 24, 17, whatever.
10:14 It's essentially what I predicted.
10:15 It's what I expected.
10:17 But this team has got to find a way to produce.
10:23 This team has got to find a way.
10:27 And this is all on coaching.
10:28 I'm sorry.
10:29 The offensive line looked horrible.
10:34 You were pushed around.
10:36 You were beat up.
10:37 Listen, y'all know I love the offensive line.
10:40 I'm a big ugly.
10:41 I like hanging out with big uglies.
10:43 I'm a lineman guy.
10:47 And you are the returning offensive line for the NFL's leading rusher.
10:53 And today you were embarrassed.
10:55 Every person on that offensive line should be embarrassed.
10:58 Every person on that offensive line should be sent at home, pissed off.
11:02 And when that plane lands in Vegas, go in and lift, go in and get treatment, watch film
11:08 and say, man, Monday night with all the NFL world watching, Monday night, this got to
11:18 be fixed.
11:19 Now, I wrote an article last week that Josh McDaniels was in danger of losing a lot more
11:26 than just this game.
11:29 I stand by that.
11:31 I do not believe he has as of yet lost this.
11:35 I'm going to be talking to people on the phones.
11:38 I'll probably have a little bit more to say a little bit later in the week, probably Tuesday
11:43 about that subject.
11:45 And so I'll be accountable to you there.
11:49 But the way this team kept fighting, even at the end, is not indicative of a team that
11:53 is quick.
11:54 So you may choose to believe it.
11:55 I saw my timeline.
11:56 A lot of people said it.
11:57 That's fine.
11:58 I'm not critical of you feeling that way.
12:00 But I'm telling you, as a guy that was just in the locker room, I think they're mad.
12:03 I think they're angry.
12:04 I think they're frustrated.
12:06 I think they're looking for answers.
12:07 This is when your coaching staff gives them.
12:10 It's why you're the coaching staff.
12:12 Remember Saban, if you're allowing it, coaching it, they're looking for that leadership.
12:19 I think Josh McDaniels, 21 games in, says it all.
12:23 You're supposed to be the offensive guy.
12:26 You put all your money, all your horse money.
12:28 It's like going to a racetrack, putting all your money on one horse.
12:32 You put your money into an offensive horse and your offense sucks.
12:39 Your big money quarterback that you handpicked today, in my opinion, just got outplayed by
12:46 a rookie who hasn't been properly prepared.
12:51 Ouch.
12:54 You got a great running back in Josh Jacobs.
12:57 I'm sorry, he can't work if the moment he gets the ball, he's got people on him.
13:02 Yeah, I believe in yak, yards after the catch, but you got to be able to get some type of
13:07 a head of steam.
13:10 Does anyone not say, "Where's Khalil Mack?"
13:13 Bueller, Bueller.
13:15 I mean, y'all may not have played with Khalil, but y'all need to be football fans enough
13:22 to know who Khalil is.
13:25 Josh had schemes called to chip them, double them, hit them, knock them around, and he
13:29 still is like, "Excuse me," and win.
13:33 It was brutal.
13:36 What I just saw against a good charger team, but had a ton of stars out.
13:45 Dear God, can you imagine if they were at full strength?
13:50 This would have been a whoopin'.
13:53 I mean, it was bad.
13:56 So what is the complete recap?
13:58 This is all on coaching.
14:00 Now I understand people are going to come to me and say, "Oh no, how can you say that
14:05 when players are the ones who execute?"
14:08 Because remember what Saban said, "If you allow it, you're coaching it," and this has
14:11 been the story.
14:13 Has this not been the story?
14:16 You are, I don't think you got a lot of horses on defense.
14:20 This is why I said I thought this was not a playoff team, and I stand by that.
14:25 I think I've been proven right after four games, but you chose to spend your money there.
14:31 I remember a buddy one time of mine who had a house that was not really a great house,
14:35 wasn't in a great neighborhood, and he drove a beautiful, gorgeous, brand new Corvette.
14:43 And I remember him telling me, "Yeah, my parents are all mad at me because I have a dump of
14:47 a house, but an amazing car."
14:49 He goes, "But I wanted the car and the house isn't as important to me."
14:52 Okay, it's his money.
14:56 Don't complain about your defense when you put all your money into a Corvette but forgot.
15:01 No transmission.
15:03 I'm sorry.
15:05 The complete recap is this coaching staff is not performing.
15:12 It's not getting ... Listen, at some point, players got to get the hint.
15:17 And when it continues to happen, that's coaching.
15:21 That's preparation.
15:23 That's all on them.
15:24 Now, I'm not sitting here saying, "We've fired Josh McDaniels."
15:27 Who are you going to replace him with?
15:30 Ask yourself that, Jackson.
15:31 I mean, everybody has a tendency to say, "Fire this guy.
15:35 Get rid of the guy."
15:36 Well, who are you going to replace him with?
15:40 That to me is foolishness.
15:41 You can do it if you want.
15:42 I'm not calling you foolish.
15:44 I'm just saying that the statement is foolishness.
15:46 Who are you going to replace him with?
15:48 So you got 13 games left.
15:51 And you got a lot of time.
15:54 If you can turn this thing around, there's plenty of time.
15:57 The season's not over.
15:58 Regardless of what everyone says, it ain't over.
16:00 There's still a game to be played.
16:03 But now you got to get in there and figure out the mess.
16:08 This is what Josh McDaniels gets paid for in each of his hand-picked staff.
16:13 I'm sorry.
16:14 I believe Josh has a decent staff.
16:16 He's got a couple of guys on there that I'm baffled are still part of his team.
16:22 But guess what, Josh?
16:23 You wanted them.
16:24 You made this meal.
16:25 You got to eat it now.
16:28 I can tell you right now, I believe Ziegler got Josh what Josh wanted.
16:34 I think he would have built it a little bit differently.
16:37 I absolutely believe that.
16:38 I don't think he would say that publicly.
16:40 And I'm not implying he said it to me.
16:43 It is what it is.
16:45 And so we are stuck now.
16:48 And when I say we, they are stuck now with a one in three team, underperforming, lack
16:56 of discipline, lack of execution.
17:01 I can go on, but there's no reason to.
17:03 You're beating a dead horse.
17:06 But I'm going to tell you something.
17:08 A lot of anger in that locker room.
17:12 Again, I personally, and I would tell you guys, if I felt this team had given up on
17:18 Josh, I think there's a lot of questions of him.
17:22 I think that's absolutely fair.
17:23 And I know it to be correct.
17:26 But I think there's a lot of questions about him.
17:28 I think there's a lot of people wondering about him.
17:31 A lot of people guessing, but I don't think he's lost it or this team would not have fought
17:38 and come back.
17:39 I've been around football too long, folks.
17:41 That's not what teams that quit do.
17:44 I think you could see it.
17:45 In fact, I tweeted out a picture.
17:46 Somebody else tweeted about Max looking despondent on the sideline.
17:51 Those are signs of teams that are weary.
17:54 This team's weary.
17:55 Somehow, Josh McDaniels this week has to dust them off, build them up, and at the same time,
18:04 put a boot in their ass.
18:06 It is what it is.
18:08 There's no getting around it.
18:10 This is all on coaching now.
18:12 It's clear what players are underperforming.
18:16 It's clear what players are not doing well.
18:19 We know the players that are making dumb mistakes.
18:22 You got to keep some guys because your coach wants to put so much money into offense.
18:26 Okay, well, we can afford this guy.
18:33 But now it's on him.
18:35 This is all Josh McDaniels.
18:37 In fact, I'm going to go a step farther.
18:39 There's zero pressure on the team this week.
18:42 It's all on Josh McDaniels.
18:45 Green Bay's coming to town.
18:46 This is a beatable team.
18:48 There are games coming up that are winnable games.
18:52 And your team can respond and get back on track.
18:56 But this is what you wanted.
19:00 This is what you got.
19:03 Now you got to fix it.
19:06 The execution mistakes.
19:10 It is players.
19:12 I'm sorry, but am I the only one that would like to see a coach walk out, pull a guy off
19:17 the field and put a backup in?
19:21 I would have.
19:23 And yes, some backups got reps, but I mean, make a statement.
19:26 Okay, you sit your ass right over there.
19:29 We'll see it after the game.
19:32 All right, Rook.
19:33 Okay, young blood, you're in.
19:36 If the veteran's going to make screwed up mistakes, I'm going to ride with you.
19:40 Is that fair?
19:43 I think it is.
19:44 I think it is.
19:46 Aiden O'Connell did a lot today that I thought was really good.
19:50 He did some things that weren't good, but he's a rookie in his first start.
19:53 That was underprepared in my opinion.
19:57 And in the opinions of some others, by the way.
20:01 And so I asked this question on my Twitter.
20:03 In fact, you can go vote @HondoCarpenter is my Twitter, and I'll let you know what the
20:08 results are.
20:10 Several thousand of you have voted.
20:11 Thank you for that.
20:12 I appreciate it.
20:14 I asked Raider Nation, who do you want starting a quarterback next week?
20:20 AO4, that's Aiden O'Connell, 76%.
20:25 And Garoppolo, 24%.
20:29 I think you can make an argument for both.
20:32 I believe it will be Garoppolo, 100%, because it would have been a Garoppolo this week.
20:39 And I believe that they know they're playing for a lot and they need wins.
20:43 And they believe right now Garoppolo is the one that's going to give them the best shot.
20:49 That's their decision.
20:51 Their decision.
20:52 I think the young gun just showed you a lot more than Garoppolo has.
20:58 But it's the reality of the situation.
21:00 It is what it is.
21:02 And now Josh has to fix it.
21:06 I want someone put a tweet out that said Hondo is now on the fire McDaniels bandwagon train
21:11 or something like that.
21:12 I'm not on any train.
21:13 My job is to report to you what I just saw.
21:16 And what I just saw was a filthy mountain mess.
21:20 Does anybody remember the first original Jurassic Park when they came up on this big, high,
21:27 huge, taller than them pile of dinosaur poo?
21:32 Well, I just watched a SoFi stadium full of poo.
21:37 Was horrible.
21:40 The Chargers, with one of the worst coaches in the world, they have so much talent, even
21:44 with all those guys down, the way the Raiders are playing, they should have killed them.
21:48 This was a ripe game for the Raiders to steal and they just look terrible.
21:54 So the motto of the week is, the recap is, coaching sucked.
21:59 It was terrible.
22:00 Now you may say, what about this, this and this?
22:02 Again, it's not about player execution because this has been a theme.
22:07 So it's being allowed now.
22:09 It's been a long one.
22:12 They got to fix it.
22:13 This is all on Josh McDaniels.
22:16 The nation next week at Allegiant Stadium, Monday night football.
22:22 The Green Bay Packers, going to be a ton of green in that stadium, are coming in.
22:29 You may not know this, but the entire football world watches Monday night football.
22:33 Everybody except the two teams.
22:35 Everybody's going to be watching.
22:38 And Josh McDaniels on national TV is going to be able to show, wow, I rallied my troops.
22:44 I fixed it.
22:47 Or on national TV, it is going to be an utter embarrassment.
22:52 I have no prediction right now.
22:55 I got to go back and watch the film.
22:57 I'm going to talk to some people.
22:59 I want to get some more analysis before I make my thoughts known.
23:03 I have some thoughts, but I want to report, not give opinion.
23:08 But this was very disappointing.
23:11 And I don't think there's any other way to parse it.
23:15 This is on Josh McDaniels now.
23:19 Y'all know I like him.
23:21 Good man.
23:22 Not calling for his firing.

23:54 All the spotlight's on him.

24:22 He's got to fix it.
24:25 And it's going to be interesting to see.
