00:00 You, my friend, what do you think about women's suffrage?
00:03 Women voting?
00:05 Sure, why not?
00:07 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we are putting our love for the company aside and taking
00:14 an objective look at 10 times Rockstar went too far.
00:18 For this list we'll be looking at those moments that crossed the line.
00:22 Rockstar is known for pushing the limits and playing to the darker side of comedy but sometimes
00:26 even they can go a bit too far.
00:29 Do you think any of these weren't over the line?
00:31 Are we being too sensitive?
00:32 Let us know in the comments below.
00:35 Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:39 the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:43 Mowing Down Monks
00:48 The original Grand Theft Auto game was a turning point for gaming.
00:51 It was well received by gamers and less well received by parents and media who hadn't quite
00:55 grasped what could be so fun about the total freedom to rampage through a fictional city.
01:00 But amongst this bloody rampage was one encounter that seemed a touch too intentional.
01:06 Amongst the regular pedestrians, players could find lines of Hare Krishna walking the streets.
01:12 Although traditionally a peace loving people, the player was rewarded for running down a
01:16 full line of them with the words Goranga popping up on the screen.
01:20 Translation, be happy.
01:22 I doubt they were.
01:27 Arthur's Assault
01:32 One of the more controversial moments in Red Dead Redemption 2 was totally optional.
01:37 In a small cabin north west of Saint Denis lived two of the most horrific characters
01:41 in Rockstar's history.
01:43 Bray and Tabby Aberdeen are the incestuous and possibly cannibalistic siblings who drug
01:48 and kill passers by.
01:50 One of these passers by can be Arthur and when Arthur is drugged and as he's passing
01:54 out you hear the sound of a belt unbuckling and Bray calling Arthur his new pet.
02:00 The scene and situation is a little hard to swallow as many players who got invested in
02:04 the deep and rich world of RDR2 feel like they are Arthur in many ways.
02:09 The revenge is brutal and cathartic but it doesn't exactly outweigh the assault that
02:14 takes place.
02:22 Trevor's Rampages
02:29 One of Trevor's individual mission types in GTA 5 is his rampage missions where he
02:34 is set loose and challenged to gun down as many incoming groups as possible, groups like
02:39 hipsters, hillbillies and soldiers.
02:43 Although the player can partake in this kind of activity themselves at any time while free
02:46 roaming there is something slightly off putting about missions designed for player progression
02:51 that feature a lone gunman mowing down civilians in public.
02:56 Honestly this entire list could probably be filled with Trevor moments but this one in
02:59 particular did make a few people a little uncomfortable.
03:05 Rockstar Apologizes
03:07 Here is an entry that Rockstar uncharacteristically apologized for.
03:11 The goal of the GTA games is to make the world feel as consistent and real as possible.
03:16 Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, that's Newton's third law baby, but when
03:20 engaging sex workers players quickly learned that after paying them they could just kill
03:25 them to recover their money.
03:27 I'm sure we don't need to explain why including such a specific and targeted function into
03:31 the game would cause some upset but if you're treated with a reward for performing an action
03:36 in game some people feel like devs have to take responsibility for what those actions
03:41 and rewards are.
03:43 Rockstar seems to agree that this was a bit insensitive and lacked the humour and objectivity
03:46 that accompanies some of their more controversial moments.
03:50 Cease and Desist
03:51 This entry isn't related at all to game content but instead to possible corporate greed and
03:57 lack of community understanding.
03:59 Take Two, the company who owns Rockstar, sent a cease and desist letter to OpenIV, the backbone
04:05 of almost all GTA 5 mods and declared modding illegal.
04:09 The reason for this isn't exactly clear with most assuming it was because they wanted to
04:13 make extra money through online DLC and microtransactions by limiting the external creativity of the
04:19 community.
04:20 No matter what the reason, it was a real slap in the face for gamers who'd been enjoying
04:24 their game freely with mods like most other PC games.
04:28 Take Two, more like take poo, got em.
04:31 Manhunt
04:32 Here's an entry that speaks for itself.
04:35 Manhunt was a game that as a whole quite possibly pushed it a little too far.
04:39 The game was banned in multiple countries, countries that don't usually ban games.
04:43 The game featured gratuitous violence and in particular some incredibly graphic execution
04:48 scenes.
04:49 Is it gratuitous for the sake of gratuitous?
04:52 Sure.
04:53 Does it have its place in modern gaming?
04:55 I guess so.
04:56 Did it make me scared of putting plastic bags anywhere near my head?
04:59 Yes, it certainly did.
05:00 Manhunt
05:01 Hot Coffee
05:07 Even GTA knew they'd pushed it a bit too far with this mini game because they pulled
05:10 it from the final product, but in the original release of GTA San Andreas, players unearthed
05:16 and recovered some files and code in the games data that featured the mini game.
05:20 In the mini game, CJ would engage in intercourse, with the gameplay being similar to the Rhythm
05:25 Dance mini game and the Lowrider Hydraulics mini game.
05:28 Players pulled the files and re-released it as a mod and Rockstar had to suspend all production
05:33 of the game in order to patch out the files.
05:36 That's an expensive cup of coffee.
05:38 Massive Oversight
05:52 Dorothy Wicklow is an NPC in RDR2 that can be seen outside the tailor in Saint Denis.
05:58 She is an outspoken activist for the women's suffrage movement and during the hours of
06:02 12-6, she is rallying alone for women's voting rights in the street.
06:07 She can also, like all other NPCs, be beaten, killed and harmed.
06:12 Controversial clips have been shared online of people interrupting her speech to kill
06:16 her or take their time beating her.
06:18 The clips are so frequent that she's become quite popular simply from those videos.
06:23 Although the game is open world and the atrocities are spread over the entire plot, it is a massive
06:28 oversight for Rockstar to include this character in this context without assuming many players
06:32 would do the worst and then share it around.
06:41 Limited Bigotry
06:49 Whether Rockstar was intending to make a social commentary or whether they were trying to
06:53 create a realistic world right down to its ugliest, it seems that police response to
06:57 Franklin as opposed to the other two white protagonists has been bumped up.
07:02 Many videos have been released showing how police engage with Franklin and even test
07:06 videos have been made running trials to see if the cops are actually racist.
07:11 The majority point to yes they are.
07:14 Did Rockstar go too far on this one or is it an important feature to tell an unfortunate
07:19 truth?
07:20 Or is it totally anecdotal?
07:21 Who knows, you tell us.
07:34 By the Book
07:42 Easily the most controversial mission in GTA 5 is By the Book.
07:47 The game came under scrutiny in 2013 due to a mission in the main campaign that forced
07:51 players to torture a character in some very brutal ways.
07:55 The mission was not skippable and had to be done.
07:58 It's worth noting that with most examples of a game going too far, it's online threads
08:03 that get riled up.
08:04 For this entry though, almost every reviewer pointed this moment out for one reason or
08:09 another, most citing it as a little tone deaf and unnecessary.
08:13 The community did plead with Rockstar to make the mission skippable as it was a little too
08:17 much to stomach for some players.
08:19 But at this point, the mission remains fully intact.
08:43 The end.
