00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:09 Last night's inaugural AEW WrestleDream ended with an almighty bang as following an
00:13 absolutely uncomfortably excellent TNC Championship match between Christian Cage and Darby Allin,
00:19 he showed up.
00:20 Edge, wait no, sorry, Sexton Hardcut, no, that's not the right one, Adam Copeland,
00:25 that's right.
00:26 It's gonna take some getting used to.
00:28 So despite Copeland losing his Edge, which is a name WWE owned the rights to, he did
00:32 thankfully get to retain his all-time River Theme song, with Alter Bridge's Metalinguist
00:36 blaring loud through the Climate Pledge arena, only with a slightly tweaked opening.
00:40 While it was questioned ahead of WrestleDream, WWE do not in fact have any exclusive licensing
00:45 rights to the song, however the "You Think You Know Me" sample did originate in the
00:50 company according to Fightful Select, resulting in the new version we heard last night.
00:53 Before Copeland lost some aspect of his WWE presentation, one thing he did noticeably
00:57 retain was his moniker of the Rated R Superstar.
01:00 Now this was, obviously, trademarked by WWE.
01:06 Turns out it wasn't trademarked by WWE ever.
01:08 They've applied for it twice and it failed twice, so...it was always Edge's.
01:14 Fightful note that this led to surprise within AEW that WWE had not attempted to renew the
01:18 trademark, which they never had, especially when it was clear that Edge was due to leave.
01:23 So with Copeland now officially All Elite, let's get down to the brass tacks shall we.
01:26 What are the real deets?
01:28 Well, firstly, as noted by Tony Khan and Copeland during the WrestleDream post-show media scrum,
01:33 the 49-year-old will be joining the AEW roster in a full-time capacity, something quite surprising
01:38 considering his limited schedule in WWE previously.
01:41 Copeland said, "I'm going to be there every week.
01:43 I'm a full-time guy and I want to do that for as long as that is possible."
01:48 Copeland said that he felt "free" as soon as he stepped through the curtain at WrestleDream,
01:52 while also noting that he's excited to contribute and help in the company.
01:55 He's also cited the opportunity to work with talent he never has before in his 31-year
01:59 career including Samoa Joe and Sting, as well as younger stars like Swerve Strickland and
02:04 Christian's new son, Nick Wayne.
02:06 Fightful Select noted that Copeland's desire to help could come in many different capacities
02:10 within AEW.
02:11 One long-time AEW talent even noted that the veteran could in fact fill the gap that CM
02:15 Punk has left following his AEW firing, only without all the backstage drama.
02:20 It was also revealed by Khan that Copeland's full-time schedule will kick in right away
02:23 with the Hall of Famer set for both this week's Dynamite and Collision, while his in-ring
02:27 AEW debut will take place on the October 10th Dynamite.
02:31 As for Copeland's move to AEW itself, according to Fightful Select within both AEW and WWE,
02:37 the news has been far from unexpected.
02:39 While one of Copeland's ex-colleagues Kurt Angle recently stated on the Kurt Angle Show
02:43 that he thought Edge was "too loyal" to WWE to consider moving to AEW, that was of
02:47 course not the case.
02:48 In fact, word had reportedly spread regarding Copeland's arrival in AEW from as far back
02:53 as mid-August from several AEW talents.
02:56 As well as this, a WWE veteran believed Copeland was a "luck" to become All Elite, with
03:00 others close to Edge being sure of the move even before his final WWE match against Sheamus
03:05 on August 18th.
03:06 Although it was expected by talent across AEW and WWE, Copeland's debut was kept somewhat
03:11 under wraps despite him spending the entire weekend in Seattle and meeting up with Darby
03:16 Allen to hang out.
03:17 As for WWE's internal reaction to Copeland's move, according to Fightful Select, the overall
03:21 consensus is that WWE are happy for him, with a rated R superstar leaving on good terms,
03:26 and will be welcome back in the future if he chose to return.
03:29 Interestingly, despite being reportedly removed from internal roster listings within WWE,
03:34 Edge is still currently listed as an active member of the SmackDown brand, but expect
03:38 that to change very soon.
03:40 So although everything seems to be all good between Copeland and WWE, why oh why did their
03:45 25-year relationship come to an end?
03:48 While Copeland didn't get into it much at the post-WrestleGreen media scrum, he did
03:51 in fact give a lengthy statement on X afterwards, addressing what led to his WWE departure and
03:56 AEW arrival.
03:58 Copeland reiterated his love for WWE over the last quarter century, however did note
04:01 that he and the company had grown apart, with WWE seemingly having little to offer for him.
04:07 Copeland explained, "I wanted to do more.
04:09 They didn't have much more for me to do.
04:11 Simple as that.
04:12 And that's okay.
04:13 I'll still be watching and still be supporting all of my friends there."
04:15 He then disputed the tribalism of wrestling "fans" who care more about the initials
04:19 of a company rather than wrestling itself, noting that he's thankful a company such
04:22 as AEW exists for the additional options it gives for wrestlers to work.
04:26 Finishing up, Copeland said the ride wasn't over just yet for him in the business, with
04:30 his excitement clearly shared by a majority of the AEW roster based on the initial reactions.
04:35 Once WrestleDream came to a close, social media was ablaze with reactions to Copeland
04:39 making the save for Darby and Sting.
04:41 Britt Baker, Sarea and Dax Harwood all reacted with simultaneous cries of "let's effing
04:45 go!"
04:46 Copeland's notable long-time rival Matt Hardy posted an image of he, Jeff, Copeland
04:49 and Christian tagging AEW with all four legends now back under the same roof once again.
04:54 Hilariously, Copeland's wife Beth Phoenix posted an image of a note left by her husband
04:58 on the fridge at home, informing her that he was just heading out to walk the dog, not
05:02 debuting in AEW.
05:03 AEW World Champion MJF, who while speaking at the WrestleDream Scrum accidentally referred
05:07 to Copeland as the name he can't call him, whoops.
05:10 He also warned the Hall of Famer against coming for his title in the future, saying "I think
05:14 he's another guy that is coming into my company that wants my spot, and he's got
05:18 another f***ing thing coming if he thinks he can take it."
05:20 Great signing though.
05:21 Much less thrilled or appreciative at seeing Copeland walk through the AEW door was of
05:25 course the man of whom he came out to confront, TNT Champion Christian Cage.
05:29 Speaking at the WrestleDream Scrum, Christian addressed his BFF's arrival, saying "I
05:34 said this at the last Scrum, I don't have any friends other than Luchasaurus.
05:38 Was I surprised to see him?
05:39 Yes.
05:40 Yeah?
05:41 Not really.
05:42 It doesn't change anything for me.
05:43 I'm still the face of TNT.
05:44 I'm still the TNT Champion.
05:45 I'm still the man to beat in AEW."
05:47 Moving away from Copeland now, and onto potentially more former WWE stars joining him in becoming
05:53 All Elite.
05:54 Speaking at the WrestleDream Scrum, the official "Best Technical Wrestler in the World"
05:58 Bryan Danielson was asked about the potential of his wife Brie Garcia stepping back into
06:02 the squared circle, potentially to join him in AEW.
06:05 This comes following comments Brie made in a recent Q&A session on her Instagram, where
06:09 she stated her desire to return to the ring at some point, name dropping AEW stars such
06:14 as Britt Baker and Sarraya as potential opponents.
06:16 While Garcia admitted she was waiting on her and Danielson's son Buddy to grow a bit
06:20 older before following up on this, Danielson certainly didn't deny that she could do
06:24 it, saying "I will never say never on Brie returning to the ring.
06:27 I will say this, Brie is the boss in our family.
06:30 If she wants to come do it, it'll get done."
06:32 While that move doesn't seem likely any time soon, one that may in fact materialise
06:36 in the near future is that of former WWE and Impact star Sami Callihan.
06:40 Callihan is now officially a free agent, with his Impact contract expiring as of today.
06:46 While there have been no teasers from Callihan on where he may wind up, according to Fightful
06:49 Select there are a number of people pushing for AEW to snap up the 36-year-old, including
06:54 Callihan's former tag partner Jon Moxley.
06:57 Fightful notes that Callihan's name has been thrown around in other companies in a
07:00 producer role, so this one is one more to keep an eye on.
07:03 While a WWE to AEW move is way more commonplace, last week we saw the second biggest AEW to
07:10 WWE switch in history, as former TBS Champion Jade Cargill was announced to have signed
07:14 a multi-year deal.
07:15 With WWE already rolling out the red carpet for Cargill upon her arrival, it seems like
07:19 she is being groomed for big things in her new home.
07:22 However, is there in fact a different reality where the former TBS Champion stayed put in
07:27 AEW?
07:28 Well, TK was asked about Cargill's switch at the WrestleDream Scrum, revealing that
07:32 he'd made Jade two big contract offers prior to her departure, describing them as
07:36 "very fair", yet Cargill never agreed.
07:39 Despite being surprised at Cargill's decision to turn down the deal, Khan noted that once
07:43 it became apparent that she was due to leave, then he decided to give her the best possible
07:47 exit on the way out of the company.
07:49 Citing Ric Flair's departure from WWF and match with Mr. Perfect in 1993 as inspiration,
07:54 Khan stated that his intention was to do the same for Jade, while also leaving the door
07:58 open for her to return to AEW in the future.
08:01 Pivoting back to WrestleDream now, and Khan confirmed its status as a PPV event going
08:05 forward.
08:06 Speaking at the WrestleDream Scrum, Khan confirmed that the Antonio Inoki Tribute event will
08:11 in fact become a staple of AEW's PPV calendar going forward.
08:15 So that means, if my calculations are correct, that we now have 7 PPVs on the calendar, almost
08:22 double of what the company used to produce prior to 2022.
08:25 But wait, there's more.
08:27 According to Fightful Select, we could be set to get ever closer to the 12-a-year plan,
08:31 as an 8th event could be set to join the lineup come December.
08:36 According to internal sources, there have been discussions regarding a new PPV taking
08:40 place on either Friday December 29th or Saturday December 30th, with New York City reportedly
08:46 the likely destination.
08:47 And to finish up today, it's a lightning round of WrestleDream news.
08:52 On the already not-so-hot AEW injury front, International Champion Rey Fenix was taken
08:56 to the back off-camera during the AEW Tag Titles #1 Contender match, with partner Penta
09:01 forced to compete on his own.
09:03 While the full extent of his injury isn't known, he did sport a taped up shoulder, with
09:06 it reported that Fenix was hurt in the same match that saw Jon Moxley concussed at Dynamite
09:10 Grand Slam on September 20th.
09:12 Elsewhere, Aussie Open's Mark Davis took to X after his and Carl Fletcher's failure
09:16 to capture the AEW World Tag Championships to confirm that he was also injured at WrestleDream,
09:21 saying "Sometimes you win 'em, sometimes you snap your wrist."
09:24 We would like to wish both Fenix and Davis all the best in their recoveries, and hope
09:28 to see them healthy again soon.
09:29 As for Jon Moxley, it was reported that before his concussion he was scheduled to defend
09:33 his International Championship against a non-AEW wrestler at WrestleDream.
09:37 Despite Tom Lawler and Josh Barnett being rumoured, and the latter competing on the
09:41 Zero Hour pre-show against Claudio Cagnioli, Fightful Select confirmed that neither were
09:45 indeed planned to face Mox.
09:47 However, the identity of who was indeed planned could not be learned, with it only said that
09:51 it was another "NJPW contingent name".
09:55 Kenny Omega discussed Golden Lovers teammate Kota Ibushi's future in AEW at the WrestleDream
09:59 Scrum, saying that it's a "safe bet that we'll see the Golden Star back in the company".
10:03 Interestingly, in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Ibushi discussed wanting
10:06 a first ever dream match in AEW and potentially an AEW tag title run with Omega in the future.
10:12 So yeah, seems like a safe bet alright.
10:13 And finally, Katsuyori Shibata seemed to pledge his long-term future to AEW and Tony Khan,
10:18 saying he's ready "to make a commitment to AEW if Tony Khan wished", to which TK
10:23 responded lovingly, "I want you to stay forever.
10:25 You're my favorite."
10:26 Aw, how sweet.
10:27 Don't pick favorites, Tony.
10:29 That's weird.
10:30 Now while you're here, why not check out this video where I give some fantasy booking
10:32 pitches for this weekend's Fastlane PLE.
10:34 Notice I said fantasy, so yes, some are unlikely to happen comments, I know.
10:40 But anyway, give it a watch.
