00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 worst things
00:11 Naruto has ever done.
00:14 For this list, we'll be looking at the most indefensible actions committed by the number
00:18 one knuckle-headed ninja.
00:27 Number 20, farting his way to victory.
00:31 During the preliminary fights in the Chunin Exams, Naruto is paired up against Kiba.
00:37 It sounds pretty straightforward, right?
00:40 But in what can only be described as a gross party trick, the immature ninja decides to
00:45 fart right in his opponent's face.
00:48 We wish we were kidding.
00:54 A win is a win, but it doesn't make the village look too good when their ninja have
01:00 to pass gas to claim victory.
01:02 It wasn't even a calculated move.
01:13 What's more, he does it again in Shippuden, just to really rub salt in the wound.
01:19 If this is truly Naruto's ultimate weapon, it's no wonder he never passed the Chunin
01:29 Exams.
01:31 Number 19, getting Kawaki to guard Kai.
01:34 Let's lay all of the facts on the table.
01:37 Kai is a VIP exchange student who is currently being targeted by vengeful assassins.
01:44 So and his friends are some of the most powerful ninjas alive.
01:48 So why in the name of Six Pats does he think recruiting Kawaki to protect her is a good
01:53 idea?
02:03 For one, he hasn't even graduated from the ninja academy.
02:07 Two, the Ototsuki clan could attack at any moment.
02:10 Three, there's a literal village of trained ninja who are better suited for the job.
02:25 We could go on, but you get the point.
02:27 When this whole situation goes horribly wrong, Naruto has no one to blame but himself.
02:40 Number 18, walking right into Haku's ice mirrors.
02:44 Every profession has a learning curve, but life or death ninja operations don't leave
02:50 much room for error.
02:52 Not that Naruto seems to care.
02:54 When Sasuke gets pinned down in the middle of Haku's demonic ice crystals, his teammate
03:00 decides to valiantly save him.
03:02 How you ask?
03:03 Well, if you think it's by subduing Haku or melting the mirrors, you'd be wrong.
03:08 Instead, Naruto's grand plan to rescue Sasuke is to put himself in the death trap too.
03:19 Thanks to that thick-headed decision making, the number of ninja in need of rescuing just
03:24 doubled.
03:25 If Haku had been aiming to kill, this would have been the first and last mistake Naruto
03:38 ever made.
03:44 Number 17, he let Kawaki live with him.
03:47 Where's the best place to hide one of the Ototsuki clan's most wanted ninja?
03:52 If you asked Naruto, the answer would be under his own roof.
04:00 There's a million reasons why this is a bad idea, and Shikamaru lists just about all
04:07 of them.
04:08 His main point being that Naruto's actively putting his own family at risk.
04:18 The Kara are after Kawaki, and because of Naruto's actions, the villain's first
04:23 stop is the Uzumaki family living room.
04:26 What if Hinata or Himawari had been home?
04:30 Naruto was trying to do the right thing by Kawaki, but he could have done it in a way
04:34 that didn't put a bullseye on his own family.
04:43 Number 16, snoozing through a civil war.
04:47 On paper, Naruto sent his firstborn squad on a simple escort mission to the Hidden Mist.
04:53 But one attack from a splinter clan later, and this low-rank operation turned into a
04:58 battle for the whole village.
05:05 At this point, someone far more experienced should have bailed Boruto and the others out.
05:11 But that doesn't happen.
05:12 Instead, Naruto sits behind his desk, twiddling his thumbs, while his son becomes entangled
05:18 in an all-out civil war.
05:20 Keep in mind Boruto almost dies putting an end to the bloodshed.
05:27 There's just no reason Naruto didn't step in to resolve this.
05:33 If not as a father, then at least as one of the five Kage.
05:42 Number 15, he's still a genin.
05:45 Naruto spent his whole life dreaming of becoming Hokage, but he forgot a pretty major step
05:50 along the way, passing the Chunin exams.
05:58 Admittedly, Naruto was a bit busy saving the world throughout most of his teenage years.
06:07 So Kakashi made an exception for him.
06:09 If Naruto just did a bit of studying, he'd be double-promoted to a Jonin.
06:14 Seems fair enough.
06:16 The issue is that, apparently, Naruto never even did that.
06:29 Even with the lax ruleset, he still laughs about being a genin, well into Boruto.
06:34 It can't be great for village morale, when most of the ninja are a higher rank than the
06:39 person they're reporting to.
06:47 Number 14, enlisting in the war effort.
06:50 The entire point of the Great Shinobi War is to keep Naruto safe.
06:55 But naturally, he decides to ignore all that and march straight into the front lines.
07:01 He's not even at full power either.
07:03 In fact, Naruto had literally just figured out how to control his Ninetales chakra at
07:08 all.
07:13 Not only that, he also spreads his energy thin with hundreds of shadow clones too.
07:19 He may have had good intentions, but Naruto's recklessness only made Kaguya's job all
07:24 that much easier.
07:32 You could argue that her forces would have won either way.
07:35 But if Naruto had stayed in hiding, it would have at least brought the world a few more
07:40 days of peace.
07:49 Number 13, mushroom addiction.
07:52 It's a good thing this happened in a filler episode, because Naruto would probably prefer
07:56 most people skip it.
07:58 Let's just say, in a not-so-mature moment at sea, he and Mike Guy decide to start ingesting
08:04 mushrooms.
08:06 Mushrooms that, as it turns out, are highly addictive and poisonous.
08:13 It's pretty odd to see the world's so-called hero become enamoured with a hallucinogen,
08:25 especially with the foreknowledge that he becomes Hokage.
08:39 Naruto may buck his addiction before the episode ends, but this is still an unfortunate black
08:45 mark on his resume.
08:46 For his sake, here's hoping Hinata never finds out, or he'll never hear the end of
08:51 it.
09:01 Number 12, letting the Ninetales take over… a lot.
09:06 Naruto's inner demons are a bit more literal than most.
09:10 Whenever he gets pushed too far, they come out to play.
09:18 But the grotesque transformation isn't just hard to look at, it's a clear and present
09:23 danger to everyone around him.
09:25 Just ask Jiraiya, or Pain, or Sakura, or really anyone who has ever seen it face-to-face.
09:37 While the sudden boost in power isn't anything to write off, the risk it posed was simply
09:42 too high.
09:43 And yet, that didn't stop Naruto from going beast mode on more than a few occasions.
09:49 Until he made his pact with Kurama, this Ninetales form usually ended up hurting more people
09:55 than it saved.
10:05 Number 11, blaming Tsunade for Jiraiya's death.
10:09 When the Pivy Sage went off to investigate Pain, he knew he may not come back.
10:15 Tsunade knew it too.
10:21 You can practically feel the weight of their final scene together, which is why it stings
10:26 so hard when Naruto has the gall to start pointing fingers.
10:41 Blinded by grief or not, he has no right to criticise how Tsunade handled things.
10:46 After all, he only knew Jiraiya for a few years.
10:50 Tsunade grew up with him.
10:52 Implying that she sent her own friend to his death isn't just out of line, it's
10:57 downright cruel.
10:58 Especially since, if anyone has a right to be inconsolable right now, it's Tsunade.
11:16 Number 10, vandalising Hokage Rock.
11:20 Naruto may want to become the Hokage, the leader of his ninja village, but he doesn't
11:25 begin the series on a path towards that goal.
11:28 Quite the opposite.
11:35 One of the first things we see the orange-clad ninja in training do is to deface the massive
11:41 monument to previous Hokages with paint.
11:53 Naruto's only punishment after being berated by his teacher is to clean up the mess he's
11:59 made.
12:00 While it's true he's only 12 and can hardly pay for the damages with the money he doesn't
12:11 have, in the real world, vandalising a national monument would carry a far heavier sentence.
12:26 Number 9, not telling Konohamaru his student is Orochimaru's son.
12:36 Naruto's young protege, Konohamaru, ends up becoming the teacher of Naruto's son,
12:45 Sasuke's daughter, as well as Mitsuki, the son/creation of Orochimaru.
12:55 However, there's the small problem that Naruto neglected to tell Konohamaru of Mitsuki's
13:07 origins, given that Orochimaru killed Konohamaru's grandfather.
13:20 Granted, Naruto kept Mitsuki's identity a secret from almost all the village, and
13:28 no one should be judged for the sins of their parents, but you'd think he would have told
13:33 the man in charge of teaching and leading the boy something that would cut so close
13:37 to home.
13:45 Number 8, stealing a forbidden scroll.
13:55 One of Naruto's defining traits is his thirst to improve himself and be accepted.
14:00 So when he fails his test to become a ninja, a corrupt teacher suggests that he steal a
14:06 forbidden scroll to prove his skills, in order to take the scroll for himself and conveniently
14:12 point the blame at Naruto.
14:27 Although the shadow clone technique Naruto learns from the scroll enables him to defeat
14:31 the teacher and become one of his signature moves, he still broke the law and committed
14:36 theft.
14:37 Once again though, he merely gets a slap on the wrist.
14:49 Number 7, teaching sexy jutsu to a kid.
14:54 One of Naruto's more absurd signature moves involves him altering his appearance into
14:58 a nude female version of himself, to use against perverted opponents to catch them all off
15:04 guard.
15:11 This ridiculous technique proves useful a surprising number of times, despite or because
15:17 of how risqué it is.
15:19 His least admirable use of it though, occurs when he teaches it to Konohamaru.
15:45 Oh and did we mention that the kid was just 8 years old at the time?
15:50 Granted Naruto is 12 when he does it, but it's still not a great idea to instruct
15:55 a minor how to attract older men with a gender-bending magical ninja move, regardless of age.
16:13 Number 6, it took abduction for him to understand romantic love.
16:21 For all his faults and wrongdoings, Naruto does have good qualities and even admirers
16:27 such as Hinata, who even confesses her love to him and nearly dies shortly afterwards.
16:35 However, while the fact that Naruto doesn't respond to her feelings after this is bad
16:43 enough, what's worse is that it takes Hinata being kidnapped by a guy from the moon - yes,
16:49 really - for Naruto to properly figure out what Hinata meant to him in return.
17:01 We'll admit that Naruto lacked proper examples of love growing up, but you'd think after
17:06 chasing after Sakura for so long, he'd have learned something.
17:20 Speaking of which…
17:24 Number 5, impersonating Sasuke to get Sakura to kiss him.
17:29 For much of the franchise, Naruto pines fruitlessly after his teammate, Sakura Haruno, who in
17:35 turn has a crush on their other teammate, Sasuke Uchiha.
17:54 Early on, Naruto enacts a rather scummy scheme whereby he ties up Sasuke and assumes his
18:01 appearance in order to get Sakura, who initially despises him, to kiss him.
18:15 While it doesn't work, thanks to some convenient indigestion, it's still identity theft and
18:21 him trying to trick Sakura into kissing him is damn low.
18:25 We love you, Naruto, but you were a terrible kid.
18:29 Well, at least at first.
18:34 Number 4, humiliating his son in front of everyone.
18:44 When Naruto does eventually become Hokage, his kids - especially his son Boruto - have
18:50 a lot to live up to.
18:51 It's this high expectation, among other things, that leads Boruto to cheat and use
18:57 an illegal ninja tool during the Chunin exams - a test for young ninjas.
19:12 Instead of quietly removing his son from the arena, Naruto publicly disqualifies Boruto,
19:19 cheating him in front of a crowd.
19:28 While we certainly don't condone cheating in any sort of event, Naruto didn't need
19:32 to be so blatant about it, and he could have easily shielded Boruto from public ridicule.
19:40 Number 3, making friends with those who killed his parents.
19:55 Naruto tends to make his enemies into his friends, or allies, with startling regularity
20:01 throughout his story.
20:02 But one of the most bizarre and inexplicable is the fact that he befriends both the nine-tailed
20:08 fox that was sealed inside him that killed his parents, as well as the mastermind who
20:13 took control of the fox to do it.
20:22 In the fox's case, making friends with him makes some sense, since working together grants
20:27 Naruto greater strength and abilities.
20:37 Still, we can't help but feel like making friends with the one responsible for his parents'
20:45 deaths is kind of spitting on their sacrifice, even if the world is at stake, and no matter
20:50 how much Naruto relates to him.
20:58 Number 2, his obsession with Sasuke.
21:02 One of the defining relationships in Naruto's life is his friendship/rivalry with his teammate
21:08 Sasuke.
21:09 For better or for worse.
21:30 At
21:57 a certain point, Naruto's friendship with Sasuke becomes an unhealthy attachment, and
22:03 while devotion to a friend is admirable, we would have written Sasuke off, personally.
22:25 If you're on your phone, make sure to go into your settings and switch on notifications.
22:36 While most of Naruto's previous faults are due to the inexperience of youth, his worst
22:42 failings occur as an adult.
22:52 After finally becoming Hokage, Naruto spends much of his time working as the village leader,
22:57 to the point where he neglects his wife and children.
23:14 One particularly egregious example appears when Naruto sends off one of these clones
23:20 to attend his daughter's birthday, despite promising to attend himself.
23:28 What was Naruto's ninja way again?
23:30 "I never go back on my word."
23:32 Yeah, that's right.
23:38 So not only is he letting down his family, he's also betraying his own fundamental
23:43 ethos - the paperwork.
