00:00 I'm actually quite optimistic about the direction that the conversation is going in
00:05 on sustainable production.
00:07 Sustainable food production is constantly evolving.
00:10 We're always learning something new.
00:12 The system isn't perfect, but farmers are all interested in using sustainable practices.
00:29 The farm manages the cattle, including their grazing system.
00:33 We have to try to see how the grasslands have evolved
00:36 under the influence of grazing and imitate the traditional use
00:40 of bison grazing in this region.
00:43 So you're building on that knowledge of a migratory or rotating grazing system
00:50 and you're integrating new technologies to make it easier to manage.
00:55 From what I understand, 60 million bison or more have lived on the plains.
01:01 And now that they're no longer here, they're replaced by cattle.
01:05 And the carbon produced by cattle would be similar to the carbon produced by bison at the time.
01:12 And those grasslands are like a giant solar panel
01:15 that captures the sun's rays and the carbon in the air.
01:22 We live in the Prairie Foundry region.
01:25 So the landscape is dominated by a lot of small wetlands,
01:28 which means that the humidity conditions are varied.
01:32 We've established a partnership with a local basin management organization
01:37 to protect the wetlands in Category 1 and 2.
01:40 The production methods that we're trying to implement
01:43 are a way of adapting to these variable conditions
01:46 and also to keep the wetlands in the ecosystem for their value without changing the landscape.
01:53 To overcome the environmental challenges, I rely a lot on cattle raising,
02:00 which makes it easier to use lively plants in the rotation of crops
02:04 and for feeding the animals.
02:07 They're much more resilient to environmental stressors.
02:13 It's important to conserve prairies and pastures
02:16 and to use lively forage crops
02:19 because it gives us the environmental benefits that the landscape is supposed to provide.
02:24 We also grow food for cattle all year round,
02:31 which allows us to grow other mixtures of forage crops
02:34 when the conditions aren't ideal for cash cropping.
02:39 And that allows us to diversify the way we use our land,
02:43 which allows us to extract as much value as possible
02:46 in a way that's actually beneficial for the land itself.
02:49 Agricultural producers have the ability to have a big impact
02:56 on the nature of the landscape and on their land,
02:59 and I think that ability probably comes with responsibilities.
03:03 It's a challenge. Nothing is easy or perfect,
03:06 but it's rewarding, so we persevere.
