00:03 --back and all the rest of it.
00:05 But we're going to have to clean up some of the things
00:07 that we're doing to put us in those situations
00:10 so we don't have to feverishly scramble back at the end
00:14 and try to win it at the very last second.
00:16 So I thought defense really hung in there.
00:22 I think we gave some things up early in the game,
00:25 but I thought they really fought and held them
00:27 in check in the second half to give ourselves an opportunity.
00:30 I thought Aiden kind of settled in as the game went on.
00:34 You could tell there was obviously
00:36 some-- an acclimation period there to a regular season game.
00:40 But I thought he hung in there.
00:42 I thought our guys hung in there around him.
00:43 And at the end of the day, we just
00:45 didn't make enough plays to win.
00:46 So a lot of things we've got to do better, a lot of cleaning up
00:49 to do.
00:50 And that starts with me.
00:52 Throughout the week, what went into the decision-making
00:54 process to start Aiden?
00:57 [LAUGHTER]
00:58 Just, I mean, we were getting ready for any situation
01:00 because you don't really know relative to the protocol.
01:03 So I said this before.
01:07 When we finished the preseason, if you
01:09 go into a regular season game and a rookie
01:12 has no opportunity to practice at all,
01:14 it's a different conversation.
01:17 To put him in there and has no repetitions during the week,
01:20 it could be a little tough, which
01:22 is why we went with Brian in that role.
01:25 And lo and behold, I think Brian played the fifth or sixth play
01:28 of the season.
01:28 So this week was different.
01:31 So he had an opportunity to take reps every day
01:34 and had an opportunity to go out there and do
01:38 some of the things we were going to do in the game plan.
01:40 And because of that, we just felt
01:42 like keep Brian in the role that he's in
01:45 and go ahead and give Aiden a shot.
01:48 Some of the things that you could clean up,
01:50 what can you do about some of the penalties, like Jerry,
01:53 and some of the illegal procedure?
01:56 Yeah, I mean, the big penalties, they're big for a reason.
02:00 They hurt you.
02:01 And whether it be a close play on the sideline,
02:04 or I think we had one on the turnover
02:07 where we had the block on the interception return that cost
02:11 us some field position there.
02:12 I thought we had one where we went in there
02:14 to crack the safety.
02:15 And I know they call them, I think, crack them in the back.
02:19 But those are-- I mean, they're obviously killers.
02:21 So the best thing we can do is coach the right technique
02:25 and fundamentals.
02:26 And when each man is faced with one of those situations
02:30 in a game, they got to try to make a good decision
02:33 for the team.
02:33 You know what I mean?
02:34 And so some of those are very close.
02:36 You know what I mean?
02:36 They're bang, bang plays.
02:38 And that's what the officials get paid to call.
02:40 So we'll try to work hard at eliminating them.
02:43 Obviously, Khalil Mack has had a lot of sacks in his career.
02:46 But coming into today, he didn't have any sacks
02:48 earlier in the season.
02:50 And then to come out and have a game like this
02:52 where only one time before this he had more than three sacks in,
02:55 how do you--
02:55 Yeah, he's a great player.
02:56 And there was a number of snaps where
02:59 there was multiple people assigned to him and him only.
03:02 And to be able to do some of the things that he did,
03:05 I mean, give him credit.
03:07 Before I comment on what we did or didn't do,
03:09 I'd have to see it on the film specifically.
03:13 But he kept playing.
03:15 He's got a great motor.
03:17 We jammed him, chipped him, hit him in the ribs.
03:19 I mean, we did everything we could
03:21 try to do to disrupt him with another player.
03:24 And then we had a tackle, obviously,
03:26 assigned to him as well.
03:27 So he had a great day.
03:30 And we were trying to put people over there
03:33 on the right side for the most part.
03:35 It's where he was.
03:36 And he did better than we did, clearly.
03:40 Josh, 21 games in, your offense is statistically worse
03:43 than what you inherited.
03:45 When you look at lack of discipline,
03:47 you look at the offensive line being pushed around,
03:49 I'm just curious, what are those things
03:51 that you as a staff can do to get this team back on track
03:56 and the lack of discipline?
03:57 Yeah, our execution.
03:58 I mean, it's the fundamentals, it's details, it's execution.
04:03 Offensive football is never about one person.
04:05 It can't be.
04:06 We can have a lot of plays where seven or eight guys
04:09 do the right thing, and it doesn't matter.
04:11 You need 11.
04:12 So those are hard lessons to learn,
04:15 because it doesn't feel good when you're going through it.
04:18 But I think we have a group that understands
04:20 when we do things well, and we do them as a group,
04:23 and we do them the right way, and we
04:25 do them with physicality and toughness and detail,
04:27 and we have some success.
04:29 We just-- we got to do it more, and we got to do it more often,
04:31 and we got to do it earlier in the game
04:33 so we can play from in front.
04:34 And there's not one specific solution.
04:39 We all got to do better.
04:40 And again, I'll look at everything
04:42 we're doing to try to see if there's something
04:44 that we should do differently.
04:46 The first one, goal play on the interception,
04:49 what exactly happened on that play?
04:51 Yeah, they played-- they had-- I think it was man to man,
04:55 some type of man to man coverage,
04:56 and Samuel dropped the one and played the other.
04:59 I mean, it's a common situation down there,
05:03 just trying to give ourselves an opportunity versus--
05:05 I think they played a pretty thick front up there,
05:08 and we're trying to make sure that we didn't go backwards.
05:11 And it was one of those ones where we either-- maybe
05:13 we'll score, we throw it out of bounds,
05:15 and then we go to the next play.
05:16 And Samuel, they comboed the route,
05:20 and they executed it better than we did.
05:23 What's the takeaway for Aiden?
05:26 There were some bad, but obviously he
05:28 fought back to put you guys in a position to tie it up.
05:32 I think he'll be the first one to understand the things
05:37 that he could do better.
05:39 Playing quarterback in our league
05:41 starts with taking care of the football.
05:42 And whether that be hanging onto it in the pocket,
05:46 or making good decisions in the passing game,
05:51 and also understanding the timing and that element
05:54 of playing within the pocket in the NFL.
05:56 It's not always the same week to week.
05:59 It depends on the rush, depends on who you're dealing with
06:02 and how they play.
06:04 And the coverage structures force
06:06 us to do some other things, and then you've
06:08 got to speed up your read a little bit
06:09 and get to the outlet.
06:10 And I thought he did better as the game wore on.
06:12 I mean, he dumped the ball down to JJ
06:14 I don't know how many times, but a number of times
06:16 when they were trying to run out of there.
06:18 So I thought he adapted to the game a little bit as it
06:21 went on.
06:22 We'll just take every opportunity
06:25 to learn from the mistakes that we made as a team,
06:28 and I'm sure he will also as a quarterback
06:30 and try to get better from it.
06:32 I mentioned you passed to JJ.
06:34 What kind of look did he give you late in the game
06:36 as you came back and kind of put those two yards?
06:38 Jacobs?
06:38 Yeah.
06:39 Yeah, I thought he played really hard.
06:41 I think you can see he's ready to contribute in every area
06:45 that he can.
06:46 I thought he did some decent things in the blitz pickup.
06:48 I thought he ran the ball hard.
06:49 I thought he found some lanes there.
06:52 We didn't want to try to go away from that.
06:54 With it being a two-score game, we
06:55 felt like we could still hand him the ball, which
06:57 I think is the right thing to do when you got a player like him.
07:00 I thought he made himself available in the passing game.
07:03 I thought he fought hard for some critical plays
07:06 on a sideline to get first downs,
07:08 and then obviously scored a touchdown down there
07:10 to get a one-score game.
07:11 So he always plays like that.
07:13 He's a warrior.
07:14 And I think he gave everything he had today
07:18 to help us try to make a push there late.
07:21 And we just got to do more to help put ourselves
07:24 in a better situation.
07:26 Were you surprised by some of the tackling issues
07:28 and also what was your bags for?
07:28 Yeah.
07:29 I mean, I--
07:30 [INAUDIBLE]
07:30 Say it again.
07:31 What was your bags for the utility
07:32 and also utility [INAUDIBLE]
07:33 Yeah.
07:33 I mean, they said it came from New York.
07:35 So it is what it is in that regard.
07:40 All I saw was what I saw in real time.
07:42 Then I looked up, and you got to see it.
07:44 It was kind of a little bit of a different angle.
07:47 Again, we'll just have to--
07:48 I didn't get total clarification on exactly what it was.
07:51 I didn't know that he--
07:52 I didn't think he hit him in the head, but I don't know that.
07:54 So that's what they made the call.
07:57 [INAUDIBLE]
07:59 Yeah.
08:00 I thought that got better as the game went on, too.
08:02 We had a few, especially early in the game, where we
08:05 overran some of their guys and gave them
08:07 some cutback opportunities.
08:10 They do a decent job with the football
08:11 and try to do some of those things in the open field.
08:14 And I thought we settled down a little bit
08:16 and got them on the ground as the game went on.
08:18 But tackling against this team is always a focal point.
08:21 And I don't think we started the game particularly well
08:24 in that area.
08:24 Josh, to that point, I look at there a couple of times
08:27 you guys had Herbert let him go, maybe because of fear
08:29 of being fined or whatever.
08:32 I mean, I don't know, but how do you get them to follow through?
08:36 Yeah.
08:39 We had the conversation.
08:40 John was great today in terms of communicating,
08:43 because I asked this specific question about that,
08:46 because he's a big-- obviously, he's a big guy.
08:48 You know what I mean?
08:49 And so when you get him wrapped up,
08:51 and then you don't want to pick him up and throw him
08:55 to the ground, because we know that's not legal.
08:57 You know what I mean?
08:57 We don't want to get called for a foul.
08:59 So I don't want to make any excuses.
09:01 Our guy's got to finish the play, period, point blank.
09:05 I think that there is always some of that element
09:07 with a bigger guy, where you also are being told--
09:10 and we have the videos and all the rest of it
09:12 about not taking him to the ground,
09:14 falling with him on your weight and the shoulder
09:15 and all the rest of that stuff.
09:17 But we're going to have to complete this hack.
09:19 You know what I mean?
09:19 So we're going to have to keep him wrapped up.
09:21 We're going to have to take him to the ground
09:22 until the whistle's blown.
09:24 You guys all set?
09:25 Thanks, Coach.
09:25 OK, thank you.
