00:04 we're gonna turn this '66 Fury Wagon
00:06 we grabbed on Craigslist into a ground pounding monster.
00:09 I've got a Mopar Big Buck laying around,
00:11 and I figured let's find the dumbest candidate
00:13 possible for it, and I think this is it, right?
00:15 - Oh, you failed, dude.
00:16 This is the perfect candidate.
00:17 - Nah, it'll be good.
00:18 The only thing so far that works in this car is the radio,
00:20 and it sounds terrible.
00:22 - All talk, all the time.
00:23 - So yeah, '66 Fury Wagon, which is a C-body.
00:26 It's the biggest car that's been with me.
00:28 It came with extensive moss growth
00:31 and extensive documentation.
00:33 - This thing is a floater.
00:34 - Yeah, lucky things that this car was at some point--
00:37 - Submerged.
00:38 - Underwater, so we'll see how it works out
00:39 when we dig into it.
00:41 - Dude, where did you find this thing?
00:42 - I found it on Craigslist,
00:43 where I find just about everything.
00:45 Just about in Oregon.
00:46 - Oregon. - Oregon, yeah.
00:47 - Good times.
00:48 - It's a cool car.
00:49 - I like the fact that it showed back up
00:50 with pristine black vintage California license plates.
00:53 - Yeah, and a bunch of C's parts inside.
00:55 - Yeah, and a bunch of C's parts.

00:59 The dude didn't mention that it was ever dragged
01:01 out of a lake, but I think you might have a handle on it.
01:03 I think as long as we make the engine run, it'll be cool.

01:08 - All right, so first thing we're gonna do
01:09 is get that old motor out, tear it apart,
01:11 and talk about upgrades.
01:12 - Ooh, that old motor.
01:13 - Let's forget about this thing for a while.
01:15 - What old motor?
01:16 - The motor out of Rolls-Royce.
01:18 That Cheggy 400.
01:19 That Cheggy 400 big block is gonna live again.
01:22 - Good times.
01:23 - Let's do it.

01:47 - Is there enough room in this thing?
01:55 - For everyone I know, I think, pretty much.
01:57 - I don't know that many people.
01:59 - I like the patina, I like the way it's rubbed through.
02:01 - It's got more glass than my apartment, I think.
02:04 - Yeah, this is the best part of the car.
02:06 - Yeah, this car's been in combat, apparently,
02:08 'cause there's two serious bullet holes.
02:09 Right at the gas filler, by the way.
02:11 - Sure grandma was rolling dirty.
02:13 - Which I like, 'cause they were clearly
02:14 trying to blow this thing up, but it didn't work.
02:16 - Now how much room we got under the hood?
02:18 (metal clanging)
02:19 Oh, Mr. Fonzarelli.
02:20 - There you go.
02:23 - That was patina rolling through the middle of the hood.
02:26 - There's nothing in here, but there's plenty of room
02:28 to put in whatever we want.
02:28 - There's plenty of room.
02:29 - But I think we should keep it really simple.
02:30 This had a Mopar big block in it, a 383 two barrel,
02:33 and if you recall, Rolls-Mokey had this 400 in it
02:37 that had that shake problem, that's the reason
02:38 it didn't wind up in the general mayhem.
02:40 But I'm thinking, if we throw a Stroker bottom end
02:43 in this thing, fix the balance, make some horsepower,
02:46 we can throw it right into this wagon.
02:47 - Stroker make it bigger?
02:48 - Stroker makes it bigger.
02:49 - Bigger's better.
02:50 - To the tune of 512 cubic inches.
02:53 - How many horse?
02:54 - I'm saying minimum 450, with these heads
02:58 and a Mopar cam, minimum.
03:00 - They could get us up to the speed limit at least.
03:01 - Yeah, that'll probably move this thing around.
03:04 All right, you wanna get started, tear this thing apart?
03:05 - Let's do it.
03:06 - Cool.
03:07 (rock music)
03:09 All right, so this motor might not look like much,
03:15 but believe it or not, there's a ton
03:16 of performance potential inside this thing.
03:18 This is a 1973 400 Mopar block.
03:21 This block has a stronger rib on the side of it,
03:24 bigger bearing journals.
03:26 It's got the biggest bore, so when you put a Stroker crank
03:28 into it, it makes serious size.
03:30 And this motor itself actually has a set
03:31 of 452 casting heads.
03:33 They're the later high flow heads that have valve seats
03:36 that are hardened in them, so they work great
03:37 with unleaded gas.
03:39 These are some of the best heads made,
03:40 so between that and between the bottom end being stroked
03:43 to a 512 cubic inch, we've got serious performance
03:46 potential in here using mostly stock parts.

03:51 After we tear this thing down to the block,
03:53 we're gonna send it off to a local machine shop
03:54 and have it bored 35 over.
03:56 Then once the Stroker kit comes in,
03:58 we can start assembling everything.
03:59 We've got all the rest of the parts here.
04:01 We'll clean 'em and paint 'em,
04:01 get 'em ready for the install.
04:03 If everything goes together smoothly,
04:04 this'll be a nice, quick, simple package
04:06 that'll double the horsepower of this thing.
04:09 So we've got the 400 broken down to this short block.
04:12 It definitely has a cast crank,
04:13 which means that the torque converter
04:15 and the front pulley were both right
04:17 'cause they were balanced, so it shouldn't have had a shake.
04:19 But if you can see here,
04:20 it broke all the mounts off the flex plate,
04:22 so that could be the reason this thing had a shake in it.
04:26 That's my guess, don't you think?
04:27 - Yeah, something in the torque converter was out of balance.
04:29 - Yeah, and it tore a freak.
04:31 So hopefully this thing won't need much work.
04:32 We just bore it with the new rotating assembly in it,
04:35 and it'll tear.

05:02 They're gonna bore this thing quick for us,

05:07 - I've known him for probably 15 years,
05:09 but I guess he's been here for over 40 years, same spot.
05:11 - So quite some time.
05:12 He's gonna knock this bore out for us,
05:14 clean the heads up, hot tank this stuff,
05:16 and get it right back to us
05:17 so we can slap that stroker kit in
05:19 and get ourselves down the road in that wagon.

05:43 You can't just pick it up and set it in there?
05:46 He's gonna do all the little service ports
05:51 and all the little Allen bolts
05:52 that you never mess with when you build some stuff at home.
05:54 - Yeah, take them all out.
05:56 - All right, so you're just gonna punch the holes
06:00 to the right size and then clean everything up
06:02 and then clean it up some more
06:04 and then paint it?
06:05 - And then bring the self-reach plug to paint it.

06:11 - We've got parts starting to pile in for the stroker kit.
06:17 The pistons, the crank, and all that stuff are here.
06:18 We're just waiting on a couple of things.
06:20 The engine block is out at the machine shop
06:21 getting bored out.
06:22 Once that thing comes back,
06:23 we can start putting everything together,
06:25 start making some horsepower with this car.
06:27 - As usual, I'm a slave to the man,
06:29 but while I'm doing the work,
06:30 here's Tony to give you your Lincoln Tech Tip.

06:35 - We're back for another Lincoln Tech Tip.
06:41 This episode is all about stroker engines,
06:43 or really, what is a stroker engine?
06:45 A stroker engine has a crankshaft
06:46 that has physically longer crank throws.
06:48 The displacement or size of an engine
06:50 is determined by the bore and stroke of each cylinder.
06:52 When you increase the stroke of an engine
06:53 with a stroker crankshaft,
06:54 you increase the engine size
06:56 and the amount of air it can move
06:57 and therefore the amount of power it can make.
07:00 A stroker crankshaft has longer throws
07:02 and that means longer stroke.
07:03 This longer stroke gives us that larger engine
07:05 that can move more air and make more power.
07:07 To figure out exactly how much bigger the engine will be,
07:09 we're gonna use this formula.
07:11 Engine displacement equals eight pi
07:13 times bore squared over four times stroke.
07:16 The 4.25 inch stroke of our new crankshaft
07:19 will turn our 400 into a 512 engine
07:22 in the same packaging as the old 400.
07:24 That's a huge increase.
07:26 All right, let's go back to the shop.

07:37 - I've got our 400 back from Velio's Machine Shop.
07:40 - Is that the same Velio's located in Lawndale, California
07:43 that's been there for over 40 years?
07:45 - In fact, it is.
07:46 They bored and honed it, cleaned it,
07:49 put some new freeze plugs in it and painted it orange
07:50 and we are ready to slap all those fancy new parts in it,
07:53 turn this thing into a 512 cubic inch stroker.
07:56 These 400 motors were like stuff nobody cared about
07:58 until a few years ago when they figured out
08:00 that it has a giant bore and when you increase the stroke,
08:02 it turns into this huge engine.
08:04 So it's gonna look like this lowly old 400.
08:06 It's gonna be a 512 capable of making
08:08 all sorts of horsepower.
08:09 Okay, so we've got our 400 block sitting here.
08:14 Lucky wiped it down with some oil
08:15 to make sure that there's no flash corrosion on this thing.
08:17 We're gonna focus first on the 512 inch stroker crank,
08:21 rods and pistons, the rotating assembly.
08:23 Man, picking that thing up kicked my ass.
08:26 - Okay, so I just got done putting in all the crank,
08:29 or the lower, actually the upper crank bearings
08:31 and now I am put a little of assembly lube on them.
08:34 Key here is to kind of keep everything clean,
08:38 well lubricated and right now,
08:41 hey Tony, why don't you throw that crank in here?
08:43 - This is a brand new crank
08:46 and all of the entire rotating assembly came balanced.
08:48 They balance it and then they ship it out to 440 source.
08:51 So there's not too much to worry about
08:53 but if this was a used crank,
08:54 you'd have to sort of spec everything.
08:57 - And the longer you hold it, the lighter it gets.
08:59 - Yep.
09:00 - Once it's in, if it spins nice and smoothly,
09:05 you'll know it's pretty straight.
09:06 - Yeah, look at that, nice little lines there.
09:08 - That looks great.
09:09 What's nice about this crank shaft,
09:10 getting an aftermarket stroker
09:11 instead of doing what people used to do,
09:12 which is get a 440 crank and grind down the main bearings,
09:16 small enough to fit in the 400 block.
09:18 This one is made for the 400 block
09:20 'cause once you cut down those old cranks,
09:22 you wind up first off with a smaller engine of 451
09:24 and you cut all of the hardening off of those journals.
09:27 This thing is made, machined and then hardened.
09:29 - All the main caps have a number on them.
09:37 This is number five, starts at number one.
09:41 They're all exactly the same,
09:43 except the middle one, which has a thrust bearing in it,
09:47 which is already installed,
09:48 but it's a lot different than the others.
09:50 - Yeah, anytime you're assembling internal engine parts,
09:56 you wanna use an assembly lube.
09:58 It's like a tacky lube that will stay on these metal parts
10:01 and create a barrier between metal to metal
10:04 while the engine is building oil pressure
10:05 for the first time.
10:06 Then it'll all get kind of flushed out,
10:07 sit in the pan, you change your oil
10:09 and you put your real oil in
10:10 after like a good warm over 50 miles or so.
10:12 We have lucky torquing the main caps down to 85 foot pounds.
10:15 He started in three equal steps, so 25, 50, 85.
10:20 We're all done, still spins great, which is nice.
10:23 These things are machined and then plasma gas nitrated.
10:28 - What? - Right?
10:29 Which is crazy.
10:29 So this thing is made to work in here
10:31 and it's gonna last a lot longer
10:32 and be stronger than that 440
10:34 and give us an extra 50 or 60 cubic inches.
10:37 - And it's plasma gas nitrate.
10:38 - Yeah, and it's-
10:39 - Whatever that is. - Totally.
10:41 Next thing we're gonna do is fit the rings to the cylinders
10:44 so that we can install the pistons and rods.
10:46 - That's a fun job.
10:47 - It's not a fun job.
10:48 (upbeat music)
10:50 - I love that.
10:51 I'm gonna start filing to fit these total seal rings.
10:56 Everyone needs a little bit of work in grinding
11:01 to be exactly the right size.
11:04 This is a street engine without a blower or nitrous and stuff
11:07 so we're doing a little bit of math.
11:08 We are going to gap these to 20 thousandths.
11:11 This is a hand crank thing
11:13 that we did a little modification to
11:14 'cause we don't wanna spend all day turning that crank.
11:17 So we put a little electric drill on it.
11:19 That's lucky, that was lucky.
11:20 (drill whirring)
11:24 And obviously with this you wanna take your time
11:26 because once you file them too small
11:28 you cannot make them bigger again.
11:30 - What? - Yeah, it's true.
11:31 - Man.
11:32 (upbeat music)
11:35 - Right now I am putting together the wrist pins
11:40 and the rods.
11:41 Basically putting the pistons on the rods
11:44 which is a little tedious and time consuming
11:48 just like Tony's project over there.
11:51 The wrist pin retaining clips look like this
11:54 and they hurt.
11:57 And you have to work those in to the pistons
12:01 where this little groove is right here
12:03 without scarring or tearing anything up.
12:07 And what they do is prevent the wrist pin
12:09 from sliding out and hitting the cylinder wall
12:12 when the piston's going up and down.
12:14 It sucks.
12:17 Okay, so now Lucky and I have each finished
12:19 our tedious jobs.
12:20 I got all of the piston rings filed to each cylinder
12:24 and Lucky assembled the rods onto the pistons.
12:27 After that we put the rings on the pistons
12:29 and we're ready to knock them into the cylinders.
12:31 The one thing you have to do is you have to orient the gaps
12:35 so that they are offset 180 degrees off of each other.
12:39 That helps for better sealing.
12:40 And when you're putting these things together
12:42 there's a chamfer on here that has to go to the outside
12:44 of each crank journal and you have to make sure
12:46 that your valve reliefs are lined up with the head.
12:49 So it's a whole bunch of planning
12:50 before you start putting this stuff together.
12:52 - If you think you're gonna do this and not get dirty,
12:55 you are mistaken.
12:57 - Lined up?
12:58 - Yeah.
12:59 - Good.
12:59 (hammering)
13:02 - The cylinder heads on this big block Mopar
13:07 are small, big, big, small, small, big, big, small,
13:11 big being intake, small being exhaust.
13:13 And then also you have to get the chamfer right
13:15 that has to go to the outside of the crank journal.
13:18 And this has to go where it meets the other rod.
13:20 So you have to get everything just lined up right.
13:22 (upbeat music)
13:25 - These are ARP bolts and they come with a special compound
13:35 that prevents them from galling
13:36 and allows them to torque down without--
13:39 - Accuracy.
13:40 - Friction.
13:41 - Yeah.
13:42 - It eliminates friction when you're torquing them down
13:42 so you can get accurate torque readings.
13:44 - And those are 7/16 bolts
13:46 so they're already one size up from stock.
13:48 Extra strong.
13:50 - And this stuff tastes delish.
13:52 - Mm-hmm.
13:53 (beeping)
13:55 We're looking for around 10 to one compression on the street
13:59 with the 452 heads which have like an 88 CC volume
14:03 in the chamber.
14:04 This should be like nine and a half to one, which is great.
14:07 And then if we go to some aftermarket gnarly heads
14:09 like Perform RPM heads,
14:10 I put us right around 10 and a half to one,
14:12 which will be perfect.
14:13 - Still, yeah, nine and a half to one's great for pump gas.
14:15 - It'll be great, yeah.
14:17 Once the stroker short block was assembled,
14:21 we did a few upgrades to the stock 452 casting cylinder heads
14:25 to work with a new camshaft.
14:26 Lucky installed Comp Cam's 911-16 valve springs,
14:30 748-16 retainers, and 627-16 locks.
14:35 Once the heads were prepared,
14:36 we laid down some Felpro head gaskets
14:38 and torqued them down with 440 Source's own head bolts.
14:41 Next, we installed the Comp Cam's Extreme Energy
14:44 507-510 lift, hydraulic flat tabbed camshaft,
14:47 and new lifters.
14:49 We reused the stock push rods and rockers.
14:51 Before sealing up the engine for good,
14:53 we had to sort out an oil pickup
14:54 to work with our new C-body oil pan.
14:56 - Our buddy, Mr. Finnegan, came over and TIG welded
14:59 the oil pump pickup,
15:01 which we had to modify 'cause we changed the pan.
15:03 You can probably go out and buy the right part.
15:06 Come on now, why do that?
15:08 I cut it three times, it was still too short.
15:12 We were able to fix it, put it back in,
15:14 everything looks great,
15:15 but that's the best part right there.
15:18 Wonder if the crank's gonna hit it.
15:20 Never checked that.
15:22 - As you can see, we're not installing
15:23 a bunch of shiny stuff on here.
15:24 We're not even really cleaning and pinning this old stuff.
15:26 We want it to look sort of grimy.
15:28 We're trying to hide that stroker motor
15:29 behind all this old garbage.
15:31 - Safety first, boys and girls.
15:37 - So that was a lot easier and less scary than a Camaro.
15:39 Now we gotta throw the transmission on,
15:41 figure out a cooling system, fuel system,
15:44 do a little wiring, get this thing fired up.
15:46 We're gonna toss the 727 that came in this Fury
15:48 behind this stroker motor and just see what happens.
15:51 We don't really know the condition of this thing,
15:53 but I guess we're gonna find out the hard way.
15:54 - Fluid's red.
15:55 - Yeah, fluid is red and it has a non-weighted converter,
15:58 which we need, so we're gonna try it.
16:00 Please work.

16:07 Very fancy piece.
16:14 - This is pretty rare and collectible, I think.
16:16 Five bucks says it leaks.
16:18 - All right, so while Lucky puts in that old cruddy radiator,
16:20 I'm gonna put in one of the fancier, more baller parts.
16:23 I have a 950 Holley-based car that AED sells.
16:26 We're gonna hide it under the air filter
16:29 so you won't be able to see this thing,
16:30 but we're gonna need it to make some real power.
16:34 (drilling)
16:37 All right, so we've got our 512 stroker
16:38 in the '66 Fury wagon.
16:40 The transmission is bolted up,
16:42 the drive shaft is connected,
16:43 all the mounts are in and tight.
16:45 We have the shift linkage handled.
16:47 We just now have to do a fuel system, cooling system.
16:50 Lucky did most of the wiring.
16:51 We have to put the distributor in,
16:53 hook up the ignition wires, wire in a coil,
16:56 put some fuel in that carburetor,
16:57 and it should start right up.
16:58 So I went over to Roll Smokey
16:59 and dug out a bunch of ignition components
17:01 that that diesel truck no longer needs.
17:03 - So all that stuff is still under the hood of your car?
17:04 - It's just sitting under the hood.
17:05 - You have a small garage at home?
17:06 - Taking up weight.
17:08 So I grabbed the ballast resistor
17:09 and this little, I guess you would call it a computer?
17:12 - Ignition module? - Ignition module, yeah.
17:13 Ignition module.
17:14 And we will wire that in to this '66 Fury,
17:17 which used to have a points distributor,
17:19 and it should be fairly straightforward.
17:20 We'll get this thing fired up.
17:22 (upbeat music)
17:24 (drilling)
17:33 - Coming down. - Coming down.
17:35 (upbeat music)
17:38 - Is it heavy?
17:39 - Relatively.
17:41 - It's 'cause I'm not pushing.
17:42 - All right, so we've got everything ready to go.
17:47 We pushed the Fury outside.
17:49 The goal is to get it to fire up,
17:50 bring it to 2,000 RPMs for the first 20 minutes
17:52 to break that camshaft in.
17:54 I've got a timing light on there
17:55 so I can adjust timing as soon as it gets going.
17:57 And how do you feel about this thing?
17:59 - I feel good about it, I feel good.
18:00 - We threw this thing together very quickly,
18:02 built it, threw it in the car, what, four days, three days?
18:05 So hopefully everything works.
18:08 I feel good, let's do it.
18:09 - We went from empty, bare engine block to together.
18:12 - To this.
18:13 Come on, baby, come on.
18:15 God.
18:16 (upbeat music)
18:19 So that's not immediate.
18:23 (upbeat music)
18:26 (engine revving)
18:29 Sounds awesome.
18:41 All right, so we got it running, it fired right up,
18:44 which was awesome.
18:46 It sounds really good.
18:47 We didn't do anything to the carburetor
18:49 to help adjust the idle speed.
18:51 - Idle speed, that's it. - Sounds great.
18:52 It got a little bit warm,
18:53 but it should have been long enough to break that cam in.
18:55 So we're gonna get it back inside,
18:56 we're gonna make a fan shroud,
18:58 we're gonna figure out the charging problem,
18:59 and we are gonna ratchet strap that battery down,
19:01 and then we'll take it out.
19:01 - If that's the least of our problems, we got it made.
19:04 - Yes, I'm pretty stoked.

19:23 That needs to be an ice cold, icy style beverage.
19:26 Some sort of frozen slush machine.
