00:20 This is Hot Rod Garage presented by Lincoln Tech and today we're at West Tech Performance
00:24 Group in Mira Loma, California because we're going to be doing some horsepower add-ons
00:28 to the EBC Brakes Mustang GT. Now here's the concept with this car.
00:32 Just keep it simple. We're not looking for all out acceleration, it's more of a
00:36 handling car because when you're working with the '05 to
00:40 2010 Mustangs with the 4.63 valve engine, you can build a really fun
00:44 cheap car but you don't want to pour a bunch of money into them or you could have just bought a 5 liter
00:48 to begin with. One of the newer 5 liters, they just perform way better.
00:52 The problem with that is that the 4.63 valve is actually kind of a turd.
00:56 The thing just doesn't run that strong when you throw aftermarket parts on it unless
01:00 you go power adder. You want to put on a turbo, a supercharger, or nitrous but that's expensive
01:04 and so we're going with basic bolt-ons. Now I'd really like
01:08 to put a set of long tube headers on this car. That's one of the best things you can do with them.
01:12 That and some gears really wakes them up but that's not smog legal in California.
01:16 Instead, we're going to go with a simple cold air kit. We're going to put some mufflers on the car.
01:20 We're going to show you exactly what that's worth in performance but first check out this
01:24 quick tip from Lincoln Tech.
01:28 This time let's talk about sealing
01:32 threads that may leak water. This is done with either Teflon tape or Teflon
01:36 paste. Either one you can buy at any parts store. Teflon sealant is
01:40 used on any tapered pipe thread where fluids may leak out including oil,
01:44 gas, and water. In the old days, Teflon tape was wrapped around the threads.
01:48 This can still be done in cases where threads are worn and loose and you want
01:52 to take up some space to ensure good seal. But using too much tape can
01:56 also crack a fragile aluminum part such as an intake manifold bung if you
02:00 over tighten it. These days, Teflon paste is a better answer.
02:04 All you need to worry about is not applying it to the threads near the very end
02:08 of a fitting because you don't want a small piece of Teflon to end up in your
02:12 oil system or fuel system. Lincoln Tech can teach you how to have a career
02:16 working with cars. See LincolnTech.edu.

02:32 [engine revving]
02:36 Baseline testing making huge power. Everybody's really stoked. It made
02:40 265 whole horsepower to the tire. Same number for the
02:44 pound feet. Actually, the most power that we saw was 270.
02:48 But on average, it's making 265-265. Now this thing's factory
02:52 rated at 300 horsepower at 6000 RPM, 315 pound
02:56 feet at 4500 RPM. We did see those same RPM peak numbers
03:00 but obviously you're going to see lower numbers on a chassis dyno than you do at the crank.
03:04 Basically, long story short, this is real typical for an '05 to '09
03:08 Mustang. But now we're going to throw some parts at it and see if we can make it just a little bit better.
03:12 Okay, cold air time. You can get a whole bunch of cold air kits for these
03:16 cars. Basically, there's like the $200-$300 kits
03:20 that don't require a computer tune. And then there's kits that are in the neighborhood of $600
03:24 that come with a computer handheld programmer. Now the deal is
03:28 the cheaper kits have a restrictor in them so that you don't freak out the math in the car.
03:32 So those essentially don't make power. So you've got to get the kits that do come
03:36 with a tune-up. You know how I know that you have to have a tune-up? All we did is
03:40 pull the stock air filter element out of the factory box and we lost 7-10
03:44 power numbers at the wheels. That's how sensitive the math is on these things
03:48 and that's why you need the tune-up. The one that we chose is from Ford Racing.
03:52 It's actually really cool. It's the same thing that they used from the factory in the
03:56 2008 Mustang Bullitt. So it's like OE quality. Really cool.
04:00 But we're going to tune it with an SCT tuning chip that Eric here at West Tech
04:04 is going to handle for us. Watch how easy this is to throw on.
04:08 [music]
04:12 The cold air kit is installed. We've taken an SCT programmer
04:36 and put an off the shelf tune-up that they made specifically for this cold air kit.
04:40 We shoved it into the computer of the car and check this out.
04:44 This is almost bam. I'm really impressed with these results. I didn't expect this.
04:48 Each one of these lines is an average of three pulls. Black is stock,
04:52 red is after the tune-up, and check it out. We made 20 pound
04:56 feet of torque and 18 horsepower. And more importantly
05:00 you can see the gains in the red line over the black all throughout the curve
05:04 from 2500 RPM on up. And you know what? You shouldn't be at wide open throttle
05:08 below 2500 anyway. That's what downshifting is for.
05:12 Our car already has a JBA full cat-back exhaust on it. It's 2.5 inch,
05:16 it's mandrel bent, it's got JBA mufflers on it. It's pretty good. It's throaty,
05:20 doesn't drone at all. And that's the problem. I need it to be louder. And so
05:24 we're going to install this. This is the Ford Racing FR500S
05:28 muffler. Same as they put on those factory race cars. The ones that they run at
05:32 Miller Motorsports Park. And I think they're going to sound a lot raspier.
05:36 Because you know, if you can't be fast, you might as well be loud. So let's get to that.
05:40 [music]
05:44 So here's what the JBA mufflers sound like.
06:06 [engine revving]
06:10 And now the wicked shriek of the Ford Racing FR500S.
06:18 [engine revving]
06:22 That's it for the
06:26 power bolt-ons on the EBC Brakes Mustang. What did we learn today? First of all,
06:30 that cold air kit with the tune-up made a lot more power throughout the curve than I
06:34 expected. Unfortunately, the Ford Racing mufflers lost five numbers
06:38 all throughout the curve. Now that could be because we leaned out the fuel curve.
06:42 We really didn't take the time to look into that. I wouldn't condemn the mufflers. And in fact,
06:46 we're going to keep them on the car for now because they're good and loud. And when you do the
06:50 acceleration in gear, they do that pop, pop, pop, pop, popping backfiring thing that makes it seem all road-racy and cool.
06:56 So that's pretty neat. And now we're going to wrap up the show with a question and answer session from myself and Mike Finnegan from Roadkill.
07:02 [music]
07:06 I'm flipping through. We put questions on Facebook and
07:10 asked fans, you know, what do you want to know? So we'll flip through,
07:14 give some of your names, answer some questions. How many responses did we get?
07:18 Man, there's like 1,500 questions on here from, I don't know, since like two hours ago.
07:22 1,500 people are f***ing off at work today.
07:26 Okay, well there's no way we're answering 1,500 questions, so thank you if you participated
07:30 on our Facebook page. And if you're wondering what all the rowdy
07:34 noise is, that's the muscle truck. It's sounding oh so good.
07:38 Am I going the wrong way? I don't know. Let's get this party started.
07:42 All right, we'll get this started. Let's see.
07:46 That's hot. Would you guys ever build a car from the ground up and what would it be?
07:50 Have you ever started with virtually nothing and just made a car?
07:54 Yeah. What? My '67 C10
07:58 threw away everything but the cab and the bed sides.
08:02 We didn't build the chassis, but the '55 we started with nothing but a tidy little pedal
08:06 and a body. That's true. And basically we started with a roof panel and a cowl.
08:10 I did a '32 Ford Roadster and right now
08:14 I'm working on a '32 Ford 5 window. I'm not going to get to lay my hands
08:18 on it as much as I would like to because we're so busy, but that's sort of a ground up deal.
08:22 Here's an interesting question. How much of the
08:26 roadkill stuff comes out of your own pocket? The thing is
08:30 there's the illusion that our budget covers all of it, but I think
08:34 every episode costs us money personally. Like we're using my
08:38 truck right now and we're probably going to damage it and it's probably going to sit
08:42 fixed forever. It costs me time and money, but no, we do have a budget to pay for the
08:46 parts and stuff that we use on the show. How about a roadkill in a foreign country?
08:50 People always ask this. This one is Pantan's Outlaw.
08:54 We've been to foreign countries. We've been to Austria. And Canada.
08:58 We actually have an England plan. Do you think it's going to happen?
09:02 I don't have a lot of hope for that because every time we do an episode where
09:06 we drive something questionable on the road, the majority of the world is going
09:10 "How are you able to drive that?" on public streets. And I think that
09:14 just means the tolerance for crap is not as high
09:18 in other countries as it is in California. Nope.
09:22 Wow, somebody with an unpronounceable name, Yipperdy Undecillion,
09:26 what do you have to say about Gup's HSV burning up?
09:30 It didn't actually burn up. That was incredible. Did you see the video? It caught fire, but it didn't burn to the
09:34 ground. They put it out. I think it was a training cooler line or something.
09:38 Gup said it didn't even really hurt the car. Here's a good behind the scenes story
09:42 about our Australia trip in Gup's car. We get there
09:46 and he gives us the keys to that car and we start driving it. And for about 4 hours
09:50 we're driving it around going "This is not a 1000 horsepower
09:54 car. There's no way. It drives like it has 600
09:58 horsepower." Yeah, we're driving around going "How do we tell this guy that he got ripped off
10:02 by Sonny Leonard?" My God, how do we break the news to this
10:06 and we don't have a show? So we're driving it around, we get back to the racetrack
10:10 and he's like "My car is really quiet. Did you
10:14 open up the exhaust cutouts?" And I'm like "Yeah, dude, I hit the button, but
10:18 I don't know." And it turns out, he looks under the car, they were stuck shut and they had
10:22 to hotwire them. And they get them open and all of a sudden
10:26 the car turns into the devil. Yeah, it's like having a nitrous shot on
10:30 all the time. Yeah, all of a sudden the exhaust cutouts are open and it truly does have
10:34 1000 horsepower. And then he gives it to me and goes "Go drag race."
10:38 So I had all that seat time in a car with no horsepower and then
10:42 go drag race with too much horsepower. Here's a really good
10:46 question from Jeff Perrick Jr. "What is Finnegan's
10:50 actual best day at work ever?" It was the day we put the
10:54 '55 Chevy body onto the chassis at Jim Meyer Racing. Really?
10:58 Yeah. That's pretty good, you almost cried. That visual was just
11:02 awesome. And pretty much put my dream car together right there.
11:06 You didn't even hesitate. Brandon Peterson has a good question.
11:10 "What would you guys be doing if you weren't working for Roadkill or Hot Rod?"
11:14 I could see you disappearing. You get into some
11:18 random car you've got, you drive out to nowhere with your camo shorts, your flip flops
11:22 and you talk to no person ever again in your life. It could happen.
11:26 I could see that. How about you?
11:30 Just travel the country doing awesome stuff. You're going to win the lottery.
11:34 That's pretty much it. Just be awesome.
11:38 He's just teasing the guy hitchhiking at the side of the road.
11:42 He didn't even flinch. He didn't. Oh, Tim Goble says
11:46 "Any thoughts about some more crossover episodes like a Roadkill and
11:50 Dirt Every Day mix up?" I'd love to do that. Fred's a friend of ours.
11:54 I would love to challenge him to a race with his go-kart motorhome.
11:58 We'd win. I'd have fun hanging out with Fred.
12:02 He's hilarious. I can't attribute this to any specific person
12:06 but there's quite a few people here asking if you actually realize
12:10 that you have a Chuck Norris tribute beard. Oh yeah.
12:14 Chuck and I have a lot in common. The fact that we're both half ginger.
12:18 We have a soul. A lot of the questions you guys are
12:22 asking here on Facebook, if you watch the first two Roadkill Q&As
12:26 it's going to answer a lot of them. Brendan Camp
12:30 "What are some of the best moments you may have edited out of Roadkill?"
12:34 What's been edited out? They pretty much show everything.
12:38 I don't know. Well, we definitely don't edit out any fake stuff.
12:42 You know, there's a lot of shows again that we... We leave in the fake stuff?
12:46 We leave in the fake stuff. We do. No, what I mean is we don't
12:50 do an edit to not show that we actually failed at something.
12:54 I think the editors take great pride in making sure the world knows we suck.
12:58 Alright, thanks guys. See you next time. See you again.
