00:03 Welcome to Hot Rod Garage, which is presented by Lincoln Tech.
00:27 We're going to kick off this show with the Dickies Roadkill
00:30 Project Car Update.
00:31 We're bringing back the muscle truck.
00:32 It's our '73 Chevy C10 that we hacked apart
00:36 to turn into a sand dune vehicle a few episodes back on Roadkill.
00:39 And we're going to fix all of that with new fenders, new wood floor,
00:42 back to street strip goodness.
00:44 We'll end it all with a tech Q&A session, but first, the Lincoln Tech Quick Tip.
00:49 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:52 Hi, I'm Greg Joswick.
00:53 I'm an instructor here at Lincoln Tech.
00:56 I'm here with Jason, a student.
00:58 We're going to demonstrate how to pull a dent out of a body panel.
01:01 Before we use our tools to remove the dent,
01:04 we must remove the material on the surface of the panel.
01:07 To do that, we're using an angle grinder and a stripper wheel
01:11 to remove the material without damaging the metal.
01:14 When we're using this tool, we want to hold it not completely flat
01:18 at a slight angle and moving it slowly across the panel
01:22 to remove our paint finish.
01:24 But the reason we're using this is it does not
01:26 create as much heat as a grinding disk with a coarser pad on it.
01:31 So we're not distorting or warping or damaging the metal.
01:35 What we're going to use here to pull a dent out
01:37 is known as a stud gun.
01:39 It uses 110 volts of electricity to weld the stud to the dent on the panel.
01:45 Jason's going to load the stud into the tip.
01:48 He's going to apply the stud to the lowest part of the dent.
01:52 As he applies the stud, he's going to push the gun down,
01:55 making contact between the tip and the outer ring.
01:58 Then he's going to pull the trigger.
02:00 And as soon as he pulls it, he releases it,
02:03 creating a current from the stud to the outer ring,
02:06 fusing the stud to the panel.
02:09 It'll take more than one stud to remove this dent in the panel.
02:13 So Jason's going to apply a few more studs to the low part of the dent.
02:18 What Jason's holding here now is a slide hammer.
02:20 What this tool is going to do is it's going to screw on and attach
02:25 to each one of these studs, one at a time.
02:27 And he's going to use the slide action as a weight
02:31 to pull up on the dent, extracting the dent.
02:35 Jason is going to move from that stud to the other studs,
02:38 extracting the dent a little at a time, moving from the low spot
02:42 to the higher spots.
02:44 The final step in our operation before we finish this dent
02:47 is to remove the studs.
02:49 I'm going to use a plain pair of pliers.
02:52 Going to grab the head of the stud.
02:54 And we're going to twist until the stud is removed.
02:59 Alls we have to do now is add a little bit of body filler,
03:02 smooth it out, apply primer, and it'll be ready for paint.
03:06 Lincoln Tech can teach you how to have a career working with cars.
03:10 See link in edu.com.
03:11 Hey, it's the Roadkill Project Car Update,
03:18 which is presented by Dickies, which is built to work just
03:21 like our muscle truck.
03:23 You saw this '74 Chevy C10 in episodes 18 and 28 of Roadkill.
03:28 It's a '74 C10.
03:29 We've got an LS6 swapped into it, turbo 400,
03:32 gear vendors overdrive, four nine inch rear end.
03:35 And it was an awesome drag truck.
03:36 What did it run in the eighth?
03:37 I don't remember.
03:38 7.60?
03:39 Yeah, so it was like a low 12 second truck, right?
03:42 The thing's brutal.
03:43 It's got the best exhaust note known to man.
03:45 And in episode 28, we pretty much screwed the truck up out
03:48 of its street mode because we took it to the sand dunes,
03:50 slashed the fenders out of the thing, put boggers on it,
03:53 and had probably one of the best times we've ever had just
03:56 strictly derbying a car on Roadkill.
03:59 But we also F'd it up.
04:00 It's an excellent off-road machine.
04:02 But the furor over the fact that we cut the fenders
04:05 and put the boggers on it--
04:06 It's been big.
04:07 --was too much.
04:08 And we do care what you think out there.
04:09 So we are going to un-fuck the muscle truck.
04:14 Today, we are going to get rid of our particle board bed
04:18 floor.
04:18 Which tends to fly out.
04:19 Yeah, we've got a new wood bed kit
04:21 that we're going to cut up to actually clear our step notch.
04:24 We're going to bend a new cover for the step notch
04:26 with a sheet metal brake and actually make
04:28 the bed of the truck functional, the truck look
04:30 the way it did before, throw the stock wheels and tires back on
04:33 it, and then go do some burnouts.
04:35 Oh, are we?
04:36 OK.
04:36 I think we should.
04:36 I think we should do burnouts.
04:38 Not enough tire smoke on the show.
04:39 Right, well, let's get to that.
04:40 As we're working on this thing, we're
04:41 going to have a little bit of help
04:42 this time because we've got to get all of this done in one day.
04:45 So you'll see shop manager Kalen dive in.
04:47 He'll be the grumpy guy.
04:49 And Scott is the tall guy with the mustache.
04:52 He looks like old man Withers.
04:53 Oh, does he?
04:54 A little bit.
04:54 Smithers?
04:55 Withers.
04:56 Actually, Kalen's more Smithers.
04:57 He looks like every bad guy on Scooby-Doo.
04:59 Or we would have gotten away with it
05:01 if it weren't for you meddling kids.
05:02 You're a dog.
05:04 Just like that guy.
05:05 That's funny.
05:05 Let's do this.
05:06 OK.
05:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:10 Wow, that was easy.
05:24 I think we're done already.
05:25 Step one.
05:25 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:29 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:32 With the bed off this deal, you can see my step notch
05:41 that I put in a few years ago.
05:43 This is basically a section of the frame
05:45 that you kick up to give more clearance to the rear axle
05:48 for a truck that's extremely lowered.
05:50 This thing is not that extremely lowered.
05:52 And right now, I've got that much up travel,
05:54 so I really don't need this deal.
05:56 But it's a pain in the neck to get rid of it.
05:58 And so we're going to make it look a lot better
06:01 by creating a sheet metal piece that goes over it,
06:04 so that when you're looking in the bed of the truck,
06:06 not only do you not see all this ugliness,
06:08 but all of your cargo doesn't just fall through and hit
06:12 the rear end and wrap itself around the drive shaft, which
06:14 then falls out and pole vaults the truck
06:16 into the Kia in front of you.
06:17 Right now, I'm making a template out
06:19 of just a scrap piece of sheet metal on our sheet metal brake
06:23 and just bending it to shape.
06:24 This should be a pretty simple deal,
06:26 but I don't want to start bending
06:27 a big, wide piece of sheet metal until I know exactly
06:29 what my angles are going to be.
06:31 I'm making my template here, which
06:32 means I'm bending it to shape.
06:34 And this is a sheet metal brake, which is B-R-A-K-E.
06:38 I kind of wish it was B-R-E-A-K, because breaking stuff is cool.
06:41 But what it does is bends metal in an organized fashion.
06:45 These can be big and industrial and gnarly.
06:47 This happens to be an Eastwood, do-it-yourself-at-home,
06:50 super easy deal that clamps into your vice.
06:53 The bending line is right here, where it breaks over.
06:57 I've got my mark right in the middle of where I want my bend.
07:00 I'm going to square it up, just make sure we're 90 degrees,
07:05 clamp this.
07:08 And it's as simple as leverage working in your favor.
07:11 Just grab that and bend it.
07:14 And right now, I'm just going to sort of eyeball,
07:16 guesstimate the angle that I want.
07:19 And then I'm going to have to test fit it and sort of do this
07:21 over and over to get the exact shape I'm looking for.
07:25 There you go.
07:26 Nice, clean break.
07:27 That's why it's called a break.
07:29, I'm going to test fit it and sort of do this over and over to get the exact shape I'm looking for.
07:33 There you go.
07:34 Nice, clean break.
07:35 That's why it's called a break.
07:36 Here's where we're at.
08:01 We've got the bed off the truck.
08:02 We've stripped out all the original wood.
08:05 And Kalen went through the trouble of grinding off the heads of every single stud that runs
08:11 along the channels on the bed sides.
08:14 Now, that's the quickest way to get that apart.
08:17 Brothers also includes these strips that if you feel like drilling out all the spot welds
08:21 in there, you can install these and they've already got the square cut holes in there
08:25 for the new carriage bolts.
08:27 It will look better.
08:29 But if you're in a hurry like we are, or you're going to line X the inside of this steel,
08:32 not a big deal.
08:33 Just get the heads off, keep going to work.
08:36 So now what we've got to do is use our reference holes where this bolts onto the frame, mark
08:42 our hole and then start cutting because as cool as this looks, the bed will not go back
08:47 on the truck because of that massive step notch that's in it.
08:50 And I don't know if you've noticed, but this truck really isn't that low and doesn't even
08:53 need a step notch.
08:55 But rebuilding the bed floor is a lot easier than cutting up that chassis and welding in
08:59 a C notch.
09:00 So that's what we're going to do.
09:10 There's a certain level of precision that you don't usually see on this show, but is
09:16 demanded by what I'm about to do here.
09:19 That is potentially the hole for our step notch.
09:21 Sorry, Dave.
09:22 Dave's not even here for this.
09:25 I love putting holes in his truck when he's not around.
09:28 So I've got to cut a hole in the bed of this so that I can put the bed over the step notch
09:32 on the frame rails of the truck.
09:33 Dave's not here.
09:34 I'm in a hurry.
09:35 So rather than disassemble the entire thing, I'm going to cut it right here with a death
09:39 wheel, two layers of protection like I just don't care.
10:07 Forget cars.
10:08 Forget houses.
10:09 Look at this hole.
10:10 It's glorious.
10:11 I totally redeemed myself from the last time I worked on this truck with a saw.
10:15 All right, now it's time to test fit the bed.
10:18 Because if this hole fits that step notch, then David can start working on his cover.
10:42 Like a glove.
10:43 Freaking fabulous, man.
11:08 Well, the truck is now half fast.
11:35 It's straight in the back.
11:36 It's off road in the front.
11:38 After the break, we're going to flip it around and change the front fenders, put the small
11:41 tires back on it and make it what everybody dreams of the muscle truck to be.
11:46 Once again.
11:47 A Ferrari?
11:48 Oh, no.
11:49 No.
11:50 Half fast?
11:51 I was dreaming it was a Ferrari.
11:57 After the break, we're going to come back, flip this thing around and re-streetify the
12:02 front end, take the off road tires off.
12:04 And yep, we have some brand new fenders to bolt onto it to undo his handiwork.
12:08 It's like we're giving it a face.
12:10 I think you're going to hang those fenders on your wall.
12:11 I'm going to Zeus them on my wall.
12:13 That's a good idea.
12:18 Last night, you saw us take the muscle truck from beat down POS to a full on show machine
12:23 complete with a new wood bed floor.
12:25 That might be a little generous.
12:26 And by the way, you're still a butcher.
12:29 You know how I know that?
12:30 Because these fenders are still bolted to the truck.
12:33 You saw the episode of Roadkill where we took this thing out to the sand dunes, put off
12:36 road tires on the front.
12:37 And I didn't think we were going to have to, well, let me correct that.
12:40 I was hoping we weren't going to have to hack the fenders, but we did because it was a big
12:45 pain in the neck to change them.
12:46 And so he just sawzalled them in the middle of nowhere.
12:49 So now we're finally going to fix them.
12:51 But you know what?
12:52 These were reproduction fenders to begin with.
12:54 And that's what we're going to throw on it today.
12:55 Yeah.
12:56 $88 reproduction fenders.
12:57 Dirt cheap.
12:58 It's not like we ruined the truck and it'll be cheap to put back together.
13:01 It'll just be a lot of work because you can't just throw a fender on this thing.
13:04 You've got to take the hood off.
13:06 You've got to unbolt the bumper.
13:07 You've got to unbolt the fender from the core support.
13:10 Do we really have to take the bumper off?
13:11 Yeah.
13:12 Wow.
13:13 All right.
13:14 Well, get to it.
13:15 Where are you going?
13:16 Shit.
13:17 I'm doing this by myself.
13:18 Okay.
13:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
13:19 Did you see how this fender just filleted this tire?
13:34 Dude, that's gnarly.
13:35 I know.
13:36 Look.
13:37 Except from this?
13:38 Well, it had a hook on it from his initial job.
13:41 It was really bad.
13:42 This is fine craftsmanship compared to his first hack job.
13:47 Come on, let's tell the entire story of what happened.
13:50 I was there.
13:51 I'd like to hear it.
13:52 No, no, no.
13:53 I wasn't.
13:54 I was there.
13:55 So we go out there with a plan.
13:56 I know I have to cut these fenders.
13:57 He's delusional.
13:58 No, we'll be fine.
13:59 We'll go without them.
14:00 No, we've got to cut them.
14:01 So I bring a Sawzall and a cordless die grinder with a cutoff wheel.
14:06 My intent was to use the cutoff wheel to cut the fenders, except we drove out there with
14:10 a generator and no gasoline.
14:12 So then it was, well, all right.
14:14 All we got is this Sawzall with a blade that's way too long.
14:18 And so the Sawzall cuts like butter through the outer layer, hits the inner layer and
14:22 goes sideways.
14:23 So I had no control over it.
14:25 And halfway through the deal, the PA comes back with gas for the generator and I finish
14:30 with the die grinder.
14:31 Did that sound like a lot of excuses to you?
14:33 I don't know what you're talking about, sir.
14:34 I'm a professional hack, all right?
14:36 Dude, you don't have to take the bumper off.
14:39 Look.
14:40 Ta-da.
14:41 See how it's all black E-coated in here?
14:43 Fender market, not original.
14:46 Before we put the fender on, we're gonna replace the original...
14:49 I don't even know what you call these things.
14:51 Nut certs, J clips, you can call them whatever you want, but these strip out all the time,
14:56 especially when they're rusty and you try to break a bolt loose.
14:59 We've got brand new ones here and they're just gonna slide into the pocket here on the
15:03 fender and tap in place.
15:06 Now we can put the fender on.
15:14 Well, I was trying to win getting my fender on before they even got that one off, but
15:19 then I noticed that the tire is ramming directly into the fender.
15:22 So I gotta take that off first.
15:23 Oh, yeah, we can go off-roading with these.
15:25 No problem.
15:26 We'll just put a lot of air in the bags.
15:27 That's right.
15:28 Look, it's a souvenir.
15:37 Dave already put the fender on and that actually makes putting the inner fender back in a little
15:41 harder.
15:42 At the very least, you have to take the wheel off.
15:45 If you can do it out of order, put that in there first, then put the fender on.
15:50 Otherwise, you're gonna scratch it up kind of like the way I'm gonna scratch it up right
15:55 now.
16:13 Our fenders are bolted onto the truck, but they don't quite line up and that's because
16:17 we haven't installed any shims behind the sheet metal.
16:19 Now ideally, you're gonna align them to the body line of the door, which should already
16:24 be lined up to the cab.
16:25 And you're gonna use that bolt there to set the height of the fender.
16:29 And then there's another one here right at the top part of the door jamb and another
16:32 one at the bottom.
16:34 Those are gonna set the distance in and out on the fender.
16:37 And when you're all done, the door should shut.
16:39 You should have a nice gap from front to back here.
16:43 And hopefully, you won't be stacking 10 or 12 of those together to make it all line up.
16:55 Well, you can't be mad at me anymore.
17:02 The fenders are no longer hacked up and you actually have a bed floor in your truck.
17:07 Better than ever.
17:08 Gotta admit it.
17:09 And still sounds good.
17:10 Prove it.
17:11 It even runs!
17:18 This tastes really horrible.
17:28 That tastes really horrible because that's not beer.
17:32 It seems that Finnegan was allegedly mildly inebriated on one of our question and answer
17:38 sessions.
17:39 So yeah, I got the call from Human Resources.
17:40 No more beer in the shop.
17:42 However, we are well stocked.
17:44 No, root beer is not gonna cut it.
17:47 Bacon soda.
17:56 That is awful and doesn't taste a thing like bacon.
18:00 It's like peroxide or some sort of cleaning product.
18:04 That is terrible.
18:06 Lester.
18:07 Bad man.
18:08 Lester's fixin'.
18:09 I'm gonna go for the teriyaki beef jerky.
18:12 Beef drinker teriyaki beef jerky soda.
18:15 I don't think this is gonna go well either.
18:17 The rest of these are pretty normal.
18:21 Video guy set this up for us.
18:24 Oh my god.
18:25 Is it that bad?
18:26 It's horrible.
18:27 Try it.
18:28 It's awful.
18:29 Try it.
18:30 Drink it.
18:31 Drink it.
18:32 You have to drink it.
18:33 I drink it.
18:34 That is awful.
18:35 I'm not gonna make it through this.
18:42 It has been tasted.
18:46 It cannot be untasted.
18:49 Someone called Shaka Laka Hug wants us to tell him or her what's the best sounding V8
18:57 engine.
18:58 And I hear people say that all the time.
18:59 Let me just get this out of the way.
19:00 Flowmasters.
19:01 I hate it when people are like, "Oh, I love the sound of that."
19:05 The Hemi.
19:06 I'm sorry.
19:07 I would defy anybody to take a 700 horsepower Hemi and a 700 horsepower big block Chevy
19:13 and tell the difference between the two of them.
19:15 I'm totally with you, but the 302 in the Fox body, for some reason, when you put it-
19:21 Those sound different.
19:22 Put Flowmasters on them.
19:24 Great sounding engine.
19:25 No, you can definitely tell that.
19:26 I think that has something to do with the firing order.
19:28 That has a different- but an LS doesn't sound like it and it's got a firing order swap.
19:32 So when I was in high school, Auto Shop, my teacher, Mr. Anderson, who's also one of the
19:37 football coaches, told me the reason that it sounds that way is because the distributor
19:42 is at the front of the motor, which I don't-
19:44 That makes no sense whatsoever.
19:46 He coached football.
19:47 I don't know.
19:48 I'll tell you the magic, though.
19:50 Here's the roadkill magic on actually making a good V8 sound.
19:54 Cherry bombs.
19:55 Three to four inch glass packs.
19:58 A DynoMax bullet, cherry bomb, only about this long, wide open throttle, make anything
20:04 into a race car.
20:06 Three inch exhaust pipes.
20:07 Just make everything way too big.
20:12 John Boyle wants to know which show car has been our favorite.
20:15 Does he mean which car on roadkill or which show car?
20:19 Favorite car on roadkill?
20:20 Charger.
20:21 Yeah, Charger.
20:22 For sure.
20:23 And you'll see why in like three weeks from now.
20:25 Episode 32, the one where we do a shootout with Subaru Legacy.
20:30 Epic Charger footage.
20:32 That car becomes a legend.
20:34 It does.
20:35 It's fantastic.
20:36 Hassan Gill wants to know if anybody from the video crew drives something cool.
20:39 Video Travis from roadkill does.
20:41 He's got my old Gremlin.
20:42 You've driven the Lemon, yeah.
20:43 That's right.
20:44 And you know what?
20:45 Video Mark has also got one of my clapped out old pickup trucks.
20:48 That's right.
20:49 Is that gone yet?
20:50 Did you sell that?
20:51 No, Mark didn't sell that yet.
20:52 It's a '73 or '74 Dodge three-quarter ton long bed with a 400 in it that we bought.
20:58 It's actually in the episode with General Mayhem when we built it.
21:01 Yeah.
21:02 Yep.
21:03 Did the people ever find out about how bad it shakes though?
21:07 Not in his Craigslist ad.
21:08 I know that.
21:13 And Video Clint's got his Talon, right?
21:15 And his Scout.
21:16 What other video guys have good stuff?
21:18 Did you know Video Dustin got rid of his Purple Ranger and he got a new Grand Cherokee?
21:22 He still swears it's blue though.
21:23 Well, it's gone now, so prove it.
21:25 Barney truck.
21:26 Randall wants to know if we're going back to the Cosworth Vega.
21:29 I misspoke.
21:30 In the episode where we built the '50 GMC truck that we pulled out of Turner's auto
21:34 wrecking, we found a Cosworth Vega in the junkyard.
21:37 And I think I quipped really quick, "Oh, factory mechanical fuel injection will never get this
21:41 running."
21:42 I should have said, "Factory antiquated electronic fuel injection will never get this running."
21:46 Oh, because it wasn't mechanical.
21:47 No, it's not mechanical.
21:48 It actually has a rudimentary computer on it.
21:51 Because of that, I'm going to say we would never get that thing running out of the junkyard.
21:55 Yeah, and then you're tempted to just modify it and then the Cosworth freaks get mad at
21:59 you, so.
22:00 And by modify, you mean put an LS motor in it.
22:03 Something.
22:04 So there's no reason to go back and get that one, especially when we have a Monza in Pennsylvania
22:07 that's very similar.
22:08 How old are you?
22:09 Mike Costello loves to know how old am I or are we?
22:17 Today's my birthday.
22:19 I'm 47.
22:20 Oh no, here it comes.
22:25 Bacon cake.
22:26 Happy birthday.
22:27 Does that say 86?
22:28 That's perfect.
22:29 Thank you, everyone.
22:30 That's awesome.
22:31 This is literally bacon cake.
22:32 Wow.
22:33 That looks good.
22:34 That's got to be better than that soda.
22:35 It's cold bacon cake.
22:36 It's like eating stuff off the floor in the Ranchero deal.
22:41 Where do you think you found it?
22:44 Oh, it smells better.
22:45 It smells good.
22:46 It's way better than the bacon soda.
22:48 Thank you, everyone.
22:49 That's cool.
22:50 So that's it for this question and answer session.
22:52 Check out our Facebook page, which is Facebook, what is it?
22:55 Hot Rod Garage Show.
22:58 You got to add the show on the end of it and look for the thing every month that we're
23:01 going to post, sometimes more than every month, that says, we're ready for questions on our

23:05 You got to know because we'll be reading off your name, answering your questions, and
23:09 having a little bit of fun.
23:10 See you next time, question and answer session.
23:12 And if you really want to be a stalker, he's on Twitter, Instagram.
23:17 I don't tweet.
23:18 You don't?
23:19 Nope.
23:20 I do have a new Facebook page, though.
23:22 I started Facebook Fry Burger's Junkyard.
23:24 I saw that today.
23:25 Yep.
23:26 Yeah.
23:27 Yeah, it's pretty good.
23:28 Nothing but junk.
23:29 All junk all the time for all the people who are offended by it on the Hot Rod page and
23:32 my personal page and the Car Craft page and the Roadkill page, et cetera.
23:37 All junk all the time, Fry Burger's Junkyard on Facebook.
23:39 Check it out.
23:44 We just knocked the bottom out of another killer episode of Hot Rod Garage presented
23:47 by Lincoln Tech.
23:49 Check back next time for more bad ideas and good burnouts.
24:18 And we'll see you next time.
24:45 Bam!
