Dillon Bell Previews Matchup vs Kentucky
Transcript
00:00 - We'll bring a microphone to you if you have a question.
00:05 - Yeah, Dylan, with you playing multiple positions,
00:10 I'm just curious, obviously it's something
00:13 that started midway through the season or during camp.
00:15 I'm wondering if you've seen an increase
00:17 in maybe busted assignments,
00:18 or if you've managed to go through the transition
00:21 of playing both without those, and if so,
00:23 what's been the key to learning both spots?
00:25 - I'll say, I'm gonna be honest.
00:28 I have like busted some things at practice, you know,
00:31 'cause it's kind of a lot to handle learning
00:32 like both positions, but at the end of the week,
00:35 I get the plays down by studying it
00:37 during my free time I'm with the coaches or whatever, so.
00:40 - Yeah, a couple of guys have alluded to you
00:45 splitting time at running back and receiver
00:47 during practices.
00:47 What does a typical day look like for you?
00:50 How much time do you spend at running back and receiver
00:51 at practice, in the meetings?
00:53 I mean, what does a typical day look like
00:55 during the week for you?
00:56 - I spend most of my time with receivers,
00:58 but at practice, it's kind of 50/50, you know,
01:01 or like 60/40, I do time with the receivers
01:03 and at running back, but yeah, I'd say that.
01:05 - Dylan, you guys got Ladd back last week.
01:16 Just how big do you feel like that was
01:18 to have him back out there,
01:19 and how do you feel like he did in his first game back?
01:21 - It was always great to have Ladd back out there.
01:24 He's one of the most veteran guys on that team,
01:27 and his leadership being out there,
01:29 it's just like, you know, it's like great to have him back.
01:32 We all smile when he making clutch plays
01:35 on the third down, so that's one of the things
01:37 I just made a lot of us just like, you know,
01:40 all smiles at the end of the day.
01:42 - Your skills at running back are evident,
01:47 and you can see that very natural at the position.
01:50 Is there any part of you that would lobby, you know,
01:54 to like go there full-time,
01:56 just to be able to focus on it,
01:59 or what is, where do you fall on, you know,
02:02 'cause you did this in high school, you know,
02:04 I came here as a receiver, I intend to be a receiver.
02:07 Where do you fall on that, and how are you processing it?
02:10 - To be honest, I really don't know.
02:12 I mean, I love receiver, I love running back.
02:14 I mean, I feel like that decision will like come due time,
02:18 you know, but for right now,
02:20 I really don't know, to be honest.
02:21 So, Ladd is going wherever he needs.
02:22 - Will he make it, or will he be made for it?
02:25 - If he did, I don't know, to be honest.
02:27 - Yeah. - Yeah.
02:28 - Yeah, as an offensive guy,
02:32 especially with the slow starts you guys have had this year,
02:35 is there, from your perspective,
02:37 maybe a want to get the ball first,
02:39 just try and go out there and set the tone,
02:40 and sort of quiet the idea that you guys
02:42 aren't able to score quickly on those opening drives?
02:45 - Can you repeat that one more time?
02:46 - Yeah, just, as an offensive guy,
02:49 you may be wanting to get the ball first to start the game,
02:51 given the slow starts that you guys have had this year,
02:53 to sort of quiet the idea
02:54 that you guys are a slow-starting team.
02:57 - I just feel like we just gotta execute our plays
03:00 and limit the mistakes that we're doing throughout the game.
03:03 I feel like, last couple of times, you know,
03:05 we've been having mistakes that's prevented us
03:08 from scoring the first play of the drive or whatever.
03:10 So, I'll just say that.
03:11 - I know Chip asked you about the decision
03:16 to maybe stick at one permanently,
03:17 but there's guys in the league, like Debo Samuel,
03:20 that are doing both.
03:22 Have you thought about maybe a dual role
03:24 on the next level?
03:25 'Cause that's what the decision's for.
03:27 - Most definitely, that's something I would love to pursue.
03:29 The Debo role, Tom Montgomery,
03:31 Cordell Patterson, guys like that.
03:33 Oh, yeah, for sure, for sure, yes, sir.
03:37 - I mean, it might seem like an obvious question,
03:40 but how much has the experience playing running back
03:43 and quarterback in high school helped you now?
03:45 Has it helped, or have you had to relearn
03:46 a lot of the stuff once you were a full-time receiver
03:49 for a year?
03:50 - It helped a lot.
03:51 I don't know how the role would be
03:53 if I did do that in high school,
03:55 but since that, it gave me a lot of confidence
03:57 in playing that position now.
03:59 - Dylan, I feel like it's been a few weeks
04:02 since we've talked to you,
04:03 but how do you feel like you've come along
04:05 and progressed in balancing this?
04:08 How much more comfortable do you feel doing this,
04:10 say, compared to week one, week two of this season?
04:12 - I feel like, as I do the role a lot more,
04:15 my confidence is getting higher and higher every time,
04:17 especially with them helping me every day at practice,
04:20 making sure I know the plays.
04:21 And as I keep doing the plays,
04:23 I just get more confident 'cause I know it quickly.
04:26 - Yeah, you're wide receivers coach, Brian McLennan,
04:29 coach Debo Samuel in college.
04:30 Has he talked with you at all about
04:32 how Debo was able to do what he both did then
04:35 and is now obviously doing in the NFL
04:37 and sort of help you with the adjustments you have to make?
04:40 - He'll show some clips during the receiving meetings.
04:44 I talk to him a lot about how Debo was.
04:46 He showed me some, I had a meeting with him and whatnot.
04:49 But yeah, I wanna meet Debo one day.
04:51 I'm gonna ask him that and see what he says,
04:53 but he has talked to me about Debo
04:54 before how his practice habits was
04:56 when he was at South Carolina.
04:57 - Dylan, what's San's idea about the secondary?
05:08 You guys are about to go up again.
05:09 So what do you feel like are the strengths
05:11 that you guys are gonna see on Saturday?
05:13 - It's a great physical team.
05:16 That team, they're 5-0 for a reason.
05:18 I feel like their defense is very,
05:20 they're something.
05:21 That's something that you've gotta take serious
05:24 on the next level, so yeah.
05:26 - I guess two undefeated teams,
05:35 a night game, Sanford Stadium, all that.
05:38 Is there some excitement in the locker room
05:41 about what you guys are getting ready to get into?
05:44 - Oh, yes, sir.
05:45 It's gonna be a lot of excitement,
05:46 especially from last year.
05:50 They're a very physical team,
05:51 and we just wanna get the job done at the end of the day.
05:54 - Any other questions for Dylan?
06:00 All right, Dylan, thank you.
06:02 - Thanks, Dylan.
