00:00 Shhh.
00:02 Hey, my name is Roy Woods.
00:04 Welcome to my mind massage.
00:07 I'm going to take you on a sound journey
00:09 using some of my favorite things.
00:12 Tune in.
00:13 These are Oasis.
00:15 [plastic crinkling]
00:37 I picked this item specifically.
00:42 It means a lot to me.
00:45 I use it every day.
00:46 May not be the specific paper,
00:50 but I'm always using a paper.
00:53 Start my day with it, and I finish my day with it.
00:56 We have a great relationship.
01:03 Very personal.
01:06 Every day, it's a part of my life.
01:12 I love this item.
01:16 Yeah.
01:18 Sounds sexy.
01:19 [plastic crinkling]
01:32 [plastic crinkling]
02:01 More soothing than I thought it'd be.
02:05 It's relaxing me.
02:10 I'm from Toronto, Canada.
02:13 Toronto's a very different place.
02:17 It's cold, hot, beautiful, but muggy.
02:23 A lot of beautiful memories there, though.
02:27 There's so much different culture,
02:29 people, music, food, experiences,
02:35 compared to other places that I've gone to.
02:38 And I've been to a lot.
02:40 It's different.
02:41 That first city is of its own class.
02:45 I feel like that's what makes Toronto music.
02:47 Toronto music.
02:48 'Cause it's like no other.
02:50 The city, the people, the place itself.
02:53 [plastic crinkling]
02:57 I started making music when I was 15.
03:05 I just started smoking weed for like a year.
03:09 I taught myself how to write music with this one song
03:14 from Drake and Omarion, "Fria's Interlude."
03:18 And I was rewriting what I would want to say,
03:22 trying to figure out, I guess,
03:23 what the writing process is like.
03:25 And then from that song and this,
03:29 I was able to write a lot more songs.
03:32 I was just trying to understand what that meant for me.
03:35 Let's start with the kettle.
03:38 Ooh, it's hot.
03:39 [whirring]
03:46 [metal clanging]
03:52 [sighs]
03:55 Yeah.
03:57 [metal clanging]
03:58 I love tea.
04:00 Lemon ginger.
04:03 Y'all know me too well.
04:05 I love lemon ginger tea.
04:07 Ah!
04:08 [plastic crinkling]
04:19 Mm.
04:20 [plastic crinkling]
04:23 Smells amazing.
04:25 [sighs]
04:27 [plastic crinkling]
04:32 [plastic crinkling]
04:37 [whirring]
04:40 Every morning I start my days with a spliff and a cup of tea.
04:47 Especially lemon ginger.
04:48 Ginger, definitely.
04:51 Can't forget the honey.
04:53 Oh, honey.
04:55 [plastic crinkling]
04:58 Mm.
04:59 I be bougie with my honey, though.
05:04 I like it raw, where it's like hot.
05:09 And sometimes they have flavors in them.
05:11 I didn't even know you can get flavored honey,
05:13 but you can.
05:15 [plastic crinkling]
05:19 [cracking]
05:23 Wow.
05:24 I don't know why, but I'm loving this.
05:26 [whirring]
05:30 Ooh.
05:31 [pouring]
05:39 [clinks]
05:40 [plastic crinkling]
05:43 Ooh.
05:44 [plastic crinkling]
05:45 [gasps]
05:46 There's nothing like enjoying a nice spliff in the morning
05:51 with a herbal tea, enjoying the sun,
05:57 the fresh air, looking at the greenery.
06:01 It's what I love to do and start my mornings.
06:08 There was--this album makes the motions for me.
06:11 It was very personal.
06:13 [plastic crinkling]
06:16 I allowed myself to get to levels of pain
06:21 and even sometimes carelessness.
06:29 I was missing a rawness to my music for a little bit.
06:33 [silence]
06:38 [clicks tongue]
06:41 I got to get very personal with this album,
06:44 with my love life, my friends, my family,
06:51 the things that really mattered to me the most,
06:55 I was able to put out on this album.
06:58 All the feelings I was hiding or not accepting within myself,
07:03 I put on this album.
07:07 For me, it was the most complete album
07:09 I've been able to put together.
07:12 [plastic crinkling]
07:18 Oh, shooting "Hate Me" with Koi was so fun.
07:21 It was a different type of video
07:23 that I haven't really gotten to do before.
07:26 Shooting with her was still--
07:28 I've never done another video with a female artist before,
07:32 so it was very exciting to do that,
07:34 especially with Koi, 'cause she's so energetic,
07:37 so talented and authentic with what she brings to the table.
07:41 Her music and videos, she's just so much herself
07:44 and very down-to-earth, too.
07:46 So it was very cool working with Koi LeRae.
07:49 Very glad that she came through with that record.
07:53 [slurps]
07:55 [inhales]
07:57 It's lovely.
07:58 If I had to bring one album to a deserted island,
08:02 just me by myself, I'm thinking of some P&D albums,
08:06 Drake albums, some classics.
08:09 But I've been spinning my album like crazy lately.
08:13 So I'd have to say "Mixed Emotions."
08:15 Make sure you're on that.
08:18 [drumroll]
08:23 [plastic crinkling]
08:25 A black person's necessity.
08:28 You can never leave the house without this in your pocket.
08:32 My boy told me to buy two at a time because it gets hectic.
08:37 So I be doing that.
08:40 But a three-pack is different.
08:44 A staple in a black man's life.
08:47 Some Blistex.
08:49 [plastic crinkling]
08:54 [plastic crinkling]
08:59 [plastic crinkling]
09:06 One of my favorite memories recording this album
09:10 definitely has to be...
09:13 going to the Bahamas when Drake brought me
09:17 for like ten days.
09:19 At halfway during my trip, I was in the hospital in Ivy
09:23 because I fell on the stairs
09:26 watching the AFC Championship game.
09:29 And I got a scar and then went to the ocean on my leg.
09:32 And the salt water moshed it up.
09:35 So much pain I couldn't get out of bed.
09:37 So I ended up in a wheelchair for half the trip.
09:41 Still got work done.
09:44 I feel like that was like a Mamba moment for me
09:47 resting in a seat coat.
09:50 Came back and showed up like nothing happened.
09:54 [plastic crinkling]
10:01 Dead or alive, I'd have to put Mike up there.
10:06 [chuckles]
10:08 Definitely want to work with Mike.
10:11 Big Marvin static major.
10:14 [exhales]
10:16 That would be great.
10:18 Of the day, like Frank Usher.
10:23 If I had to live in like any fantasy world,
10:28 I'd go straight into an anime world
10:30 and brought the kid out of me again.
10:32 Where Dragon Ball Z takes place.
10:35 So I can fly around with Goku.
10:39 Beat up Freeza and Cell.
10:42 Shoot energy beams from my hands.
10:45 If I had to time travel, I would go to the 1970s.
10:52 I feel like my personality fits there a little bit.
10:58 Especially my mom, she be giving me hippie vibes.
11:00 I be thinking she was like a hippie back in the day for sure.
11:03 All right.
11:05 [inhales]
11:09 One of my favorite items as a kid.
11:13 I see this one guy on TikTok who be drinking olive oil.
11:18 I love olive oil just like that, but I won't drink it.
11:22 So as a kid, I would bathe in it.
11:25 My mom wouldn't have this exact brand.
11:29 It'd be a big tub.
11:31 'Cause we'd send them back home in barrels.
11:34 And I would steal a tub, put it in my room like it's lotion.
11:40 Bathe in it.
11:41 And just lotion all over.
11:44 And I would tell my mom, she'd say, "Why you do that?"
11:48 I said, "Mom, I want to feel like I got that Jesus skin."
11:51 [laughs]
11:58 Put it all in my hair.
12:00 Put it on my skin.
12:02 Shiny.
12:04 So after I got signed, I was living with my boys.
12:11 One of my managers, he seen me do it one day.
12:14 He's like, "What are you doing?
12:15 Why is there a bottle of olive oil in your room?"
12:17 He was looking for some.
12:20 And I said, "Bro, I be lotioning with it."
12:23 [laughs]
12:28 Olive oil.
12:29 I don't do it no more now.
12:30 It's a shea butter thing, you know what I'm saying?
12:32 I was shining.
12:34 Glowing.
12:37 Honestly, a lot of my careers felt surreal.
12:41 From the beginning till about two years ago, I would say I've been in this state where everything just felt surreal.
12:58 First time meeting Drake was crazy.
13:00 That did not feel real to me.
13:02 Being in the energy video, going on tours, meeting celebrities.
13:08 For me, it was like, "Wow, I can't believe I'm here."
13:13 That whole time.
13:19 The best self-love advice that I can give you is to keep trying.
13:25 Because you're not always going to.
13:27 Especially in this era, it's very hard.
13:30 You have to just keep going.
13:32 Keep trying.
13:33 Keep learning.
13:34 Keep that mind open.
13:43 It's easy to give up and just say, "You know what?
13:45 I'm not going to continue anymore."
13:49 But you have to keep finding that piece of peace for yourself and for others.
13:53 So you don't make life hard on everybody around you.
13:58 It's a faster world we live in, especially in this place.
14:01 So finding peace and stability for the mind is important.
14:08 You have to find out what matters for you.
14:11 This is your boy, Roy Woods.
14:13 Thank you for joining me on my mind massage.
14:16 Make sure you guys go check out my album, Mixed Emotions, out everywhere on all streaming platforms.
14:21 And come see me on my Me & You tour in the city near you.
14:26 Alright?
14:27 Can't wait.
14:28 It's your boy.
14:30 Bye.
