Born Edmund Gregory in Savanna, Georgia, was one of the first jazz musicians to convert to Islam and changed his name in Sahib Shihab. He also was one of the earliest boppers to use the flute, despite being a fluent soloist on the alto saxophone, as well as the baritone saxophone. He worked with Fletcher Henderson band, with Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, the Tadd Dameron band, Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, and the Oscar Pettiford big band. While touring in Europe with Quincy Jones he decided to settle in Copenhagen, married a Danish lady and raised a family, composing and playing for television, cinema and theatre from 1959 to 1973. "Sentiments" is a collection of tunes recorded between 1965 and 1972, consisting of an exotic blend of hard bop and African rhythms wandering towards funk.
