00:00 Earthquakes are still striking Afghanistan's Herat province, just days after a powerful
00:04 quake killed more than 2,400 people.
00:08 Residents of rural villages have spent this week sifting through rubble, hoping to find
00:12 survivors.
00:13 MAN (through translator): All of my family members were in the rubble.
00:18 I was only able to pull my wife and one daughter alive from the rubble.
00:23 One of my daughters died here, and the other died over there.
00:28 And there was a school for children, which has been entirely destroyed.
00:33 SIMON OSTROVSKY: As many as 11 villages were largely leveled in Saturday's quake, with
00:39 many others damaged.
00:41 Most of the houses in the region were made of mud bricks that crumbled under the stress.
00:46 Wednesday's quake flattened all the homes in yet another village near Herat.
00:50 No deaths have yet been reported, however, as people had preemptively taken shelter in
00:55 tents.
00:56 Thousands of people now face a long period of danger and insecurity in a country where
01:00 aid has already been limited since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
01:06 Residents are sleeping outside, with little protection from the coming winter.
01:10 The Taliban and international aid agencies warn that the situation is dire.
01:14 DR.
01:15 HUSAM ZAID, Taliban Chief of Staff, Herat Province: Maybe we can face or see many communicable
01:19 diseases, and the people, just because they're affected from the unavailability of their
01:25 shelters and unavailability of the clean waters.
01:27 SIMON OSTROVSKY: There is also an extreme shortage of food.
01:31 Rural communities in Herat Province have been suffering from a years-long drought.
01:35 Saturday's earthquake was Afghanistan's deadliest in 25 years.
