We have followed the Shaun the sheep on the Tyne trail from the beginning as we found out this years sculptures would be of Shaun. But after the trail it was time for the sculptures to be auctioned off to reside more money for St Oswalds Hospice. We attended the auction as the sculptures were sold to the highest bidder.

00:00 The show on the Tyne Trail is now over and the sculptures that were decorated by local
00:06 artists were put up for auction this week. The money raised from the auction goes towards
00:11 helping St Oswald's Hospice continue their work. Diane's husband Bob used the hospice
00:17 after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
00:21 So he did tell me during the course of his treatment if he became too ill he would really
00:28 like to go into St Oswald's. So he made his end of life care wishes known to the medics
00:38 and the palliative care nurse and the GP. Unfortunately Bob had two consecutive evenings
00:47 where he could not, his legs gave way and the second evening he required admitting into
00:57 Cramlington Hospital and it was then that the decision was made, the time had come for
01:03 him to go into St Oswald's and so he was such a happy bunny, he settled immediately and
01:14 I'm just so grateful that he got his wish to pass in such a beautiful place as St Oswald's.
01:23 Diane now volunteers with the hospice and she said it is her way to give back after
01:27 they helped her and her husband Bob.
01:30 We have followed the Shaun on the Tyne Trail from the very start when it was announced
01:34 the sheep would be taking over Newcastle and you could see the buzz from the people who
01:38 were hoping to take a Shaun home.
01:41 Well it's fantastic, it's a little bit bittersweet if I'm honest because it's been such a fantastic
01:46 summer we've seen so much joy that this whole art trail has brought to people and it's kind
01:52 of this is the end but it's not because they're all going off to their forever homes now and
01:56 they'll bring even more joy when they're there so yeah and then just excitement to see how
02:02 much we managed to raise, it's a huge amount that we need to raise to keep the hospice
02:06 going and this is going to be a big part of that.
02:10 Well we need to raise about £9 million each year through voluntary giving and that's everything
02:17 that people do be it gifts and wills, be it regular donations, be it Great North Runs
02:22 but this is a huge part of that.
02:25 Some of the sheep sold for £10,000 and the total amount of money raised from the auction
02:30 was over £195,000 and all of that money will be going towards keeping the St Oswald's Hospice
02:37 open so they can continue their work like they did for Diane and Bob.
02:42 And of course now we've had the Elmers, the Snow Dogs and the Shauns visit Newcastle to
02:47 raise money for St Oswald's but after asking if the charity plan to do any more art trails
02:53 they said they aren't sure yet and need to do what's best for the hospice so we will
02:58 have to wait and see if there will be another art trail in the future.
