Voters across Ballarat share how and why they voted in the 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum
Transcript
00:00 What are you doing here today?
00:06 We're just handing out leaflets for the Yes campaign.
00:09 We're both volunteers.
00:10 Absolutely.
00:11 And any reason behind the dancing?
00:12 Well, it's a freezing Ballarat day.
00:14 It's freaking cold.
00:15 And we're trying to encourage people to think about the Yes as a positive thing.
00:19 So we want everyone to understand the importance of a Yes vote and why we need to do this for
00:25 our country.
00:26 Absolutely.
00:27 Also trying to get ahead of the misinformation and making sure everybody's putting their
00:29 vote where it matters.
00:30 What vibe are you getting off people coming down today?
00:33 Well, we're trying to stay positive, one of the other reasons for the dancing.
00:36 And we're hoping that Australians will be generous and vote Yes.
00:40 I voted Yesterday.
00:41 And can you tell me why you decided to vote Yes?
00:45 Yeah, I was just worried that if ANOVA went through, that it would convince the politicians
00:53 that people don't want to support Aboriginal people.
00:56 Whereas I think that Yes shows them that that's what we want.
00:59 Speaking to people around in this general area, in Bacchus Marshall or Ballarat, what
01:05 impression do you get that how people will be voting?
01:08 It seems a bit mixed.
01:10 Obviously, I'm hoping lots of people will vote Yes, but yeah, it seems like a bit of
01:15 a mixture.
01:16 Do you mind telling me your name?
01:18 Jovita.
01:19 And how did you vote today?
01:21 I voted Yes.
01:22 And why did you decide to vote Yes?
01:24 Because Aboriginal people need as much help as they can get, even though this is a tiny,
01:29 tiny administrative effort, they need to be helped.
01:32 Yes.
01:33 And on that tiny effort, you don't think this will have any huge effect on other Australians
01:38 who aren't Indigenous?
01:39 No, I don't.
01:41 No.
01:42 But a tiny little streamlined effect, I hope.
01:44 So, Yes, everybody.
01:46 And how did you vote today?
01:47 Yes.
01:48 And why did you vote Yes?
01:49 Because there's no question it should be Yes.
01:51 We should have a voice for the Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people.
01:55 Yeah.
01:56 And do you live in Alfredton?
01:57 I do.
01:58 And have you been speaking to many people around in the lead up to the vote?
02:01 Not a lot, I try not to.
02:03 Yeah, everyone else's opinion is there.
02:06 Did you get much impression of who you think other people are voting today?
02:10 I think more people are voting No than I thought would, unfortunately.
02:13 unfortunately.
