Transcript
00:00 Today, on World Students' Day, FMT Lifestyle speaks with two teachers who run a tuition
00:06 centre in Sithyalam, Selangor.
00:08 Sujithra Bhaskaran draws on the lessons of her late mother while teaching, while Saswini
00:13 Subramaniam is an accidental teacher who has learnt a thing or two since becoming an educator.
00:21 Sujithra's mother, Anbalagi Thangaya, wanted to become a teacher but did not get the opportunity.
00:29 So Sujithra decided to become one.
00:33 Sadly, Anbalagi never got the chance to see her daughter graduate and become a teacher.
00:38 In 2019, she succumbed to a decade-long battle with ovarian cancer.
00:43 Today, Sujithra incorporates the lessons she learnt from her mother into her own teaching.
00:49 These include the importance of communication, which is why Sujithra always converses with
00:54 her students to understand them better.
00:56 The reply you get is that you'll get a sigh, that "Aunty, today is a long day, I'm so tired.
01:02 Can we do something different today?"
01:04 So when you talk, you'll get a response.
01:06 You'll get a response accordingly, so that is the most important thing.
01:11 Sadly, two years after her mother's death, her father too passed away.
01:16 These challenging times have given Sujithra a sense of empathy for students in difficult
01:20 situations.
01:21 So, she waives or reduces fees for those who cannot afford it.
01:26 What do you think your mother would feel, a serious day?
01:30 I'm not sure.
01:33 Sasveni, meanwhile, fell in love with teaching when she started helping her neighbour's children
01:43 with their homework.
01:44 Although she graduated as a nutritionist, she pursued teaching as a career.
01:49 In fact, this accidental teacher is carrying on her family's legacy as her late grandfather
01:55 was a headmaster and two of her aunts are retired teachers.
02:00 Given that she has no formal background in teaching, she says it has been a learning
02:04 experience but she has no regrets.
02:07 When Sasveni learned that one of her students, an 8-year-old boy, was autistic, she started
02:12 researching and conversing with friends who taught at special needs centres to learn how
02:17 to best teach him.
02:19 She was delighted when he eventually became more verbal in class and since then she has
02:24 taught over 10 special needs students.
02:27 Even now, if I do receive any request for special needs, I would definitely take up.
02:34 Believing that every child deserves to learn, she too waives or reduces fees for those from
02:40 poor backgrounds.
02:41 I feel like I'm making a change in their lives.
02:45 So I think that's what I really love doing until now.
02:48 And also the satisfaction when not only in their exams, but even in their life as they
02:53 progress to become a better person, it makes me happy.
02:59 Divya Ragu and Sheila Vijayan, FMT Lifestyle.
