00:02 Teachers must help students find a sense of purpose
00:05 to prepare them for a future where automation and artificial intelligence
00:09 render some professions obsolete, an academic said.
00:13 Mushtag Al-Atabi, the provost and CEO of Harriot Watt University Malaysia,
00:18 warned that there will come a time when machines take over the roles played by humans today.
00:23 People will replace you with a machine.
00:26 So finding who you are and finding that edge that you bring,
00:32 the specific value that only you can bring, will become so important.
00:37 Everyone needs to know what is their magic, and this is not something that we are born with.
00:43 In this respect, he said, education plays a central role
00:47 in guiding students to understand their unique abilities.
00:50 Mushtag proposed there be a review of how students are assessed,
00:54 saying a more realistic way to assess how well a student understands the subject matter
00:59 is for him to have a dialogue with an expert where he can impart his thoughts.
01:04 He also advocates for prioritizing emotional intelligence in education,
01:08 given that, in his view, qualities such as building meaningful connections,
01:13 self-awareness and ethical decision-making cannot be replicated by machines.
01:19 Without consciousness, this machine will not be able to have a sense of purpose
01:27 and act in an ethical way.
01:30 And I believe what technology is pushing us to realize
01:34 is that our real potential is in the emotional realm.
