Water Crisis Escalating in Gaza after Shutdown of Desalination Plant, UN Agency Says
The water crisis in Gaza has reached a critical point after the shutdown of the last functioning desalination plant.
According to the United Nations relief agency in Gaza (UNRWA), the situation is risking fatalities due to dehydration and waterborne diseases.
The collapse of water and sanitation services has exacerbated the crisis.
In the south of the Gaza Strip, one line of water was open for only three hours, providing limited water to just half of the population of Khan Younis.
However, this does not address the urgent water needs in other parts of Khan Younis, the Middle Area, and Rafah.
UNRWA reports that only 14% of the population in the Strip benefited from this temporary water supply.
To operate water and desalination plants, Gaza requires 600,000 liters of fuel daily.
However, fuel reserves at all Gaza hospitals are running dangerously low, with only 24 hours of supply left.
The failure of backup generators would put thousands of patients' lives at risk.
This water crisis in Gaza demands immediate attention and action to prevent further suffering and potential fatalities.
