00:00 Nightly greetings to your friends and folks. Soojin Kim here and this is PTV News Now.
00:04 After presiding and hosting a successful 10th anniversary celebration of his Belt and Road
00:10 program, President Xi Jinping cast his eyes further to a region in turmoil, the Middle East.
00:16 The Chinese strongman told Egypt's diplomat in Beijing, Mustafa Magbuli,
00:20 Thursday of China's plans for greater engagement in heightened cooperation with Cairo
00:25 in helping bring down the temperature in the region and stabilize affairs between opposing
00:30 factions and countries. Xi reiterated China's long-standing policy of a two-state solution
00:35 between Palestine and Israel, and its intent to partner with Egypt to first bring a cessation
00:40 in hostilities or ceasefire, and then take it from there. This show of concern to bring peace
00:45 in the region and intent to join hands with Egypt comes at the heels of the reopening of the
00:50 southern border of Gaza and Egypt, which Egyptian President al-Sisi helped broker, to allow badly
00:57 humanitarian aid and relief assistance of food, water, medicine to the displaced and suffering
01:02 people of Gaza. Xi vowed to play an even greater role in securing a ceasefire despite the latest
01:08 attempt by the United States in vetoing a UN Security Council resolution for a humanitarian
01:14 pause in the raging war. U.S. President Joe Biden flew to Israel to show even greater support to
01:21 Netanyahu's government and persuaded him to reopen the southern border at Gaza and Egypt to let in
01:27 humanitarian aid for the wounded and suffering people of Gaza. VOA's Linda Gradstein reports
01:32 from Jerusalem. Israel welcomed U.S. President Joe Biden, who came for a solidarity visit with
01:40 the people and leaders of the Jewish state. After meetings with Israeli officials,
01:44 he spent time with survivors of the Hamas attack and first responders.
01:49 Just hours before President Biden arrived in Israel, a missile or rocket hit the Al-Ahly
01:55 Hospital in central Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinians. Hamas officials blamed Israel,
02:01 and thousands of Palestinians protested in the West Bank, some of them throwing rocks as
02:06 Palestinian security forces moved in to disperse them with tear gas. Israeli Defense Forces
02:12 spokesman Daniel Hagari denied any responsibility and instead blamed militants. The explosion of the
02:19 Al-Ahly Al-Mahdani Hospital in Gaza was caused by an Islamic jihad rocket that was misfired.
02:26 Along with promising unprecedented support to Israel, President Biden came here expressing
02:32 concern about a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel has cut off the supply of electricity,
02:39 fuel and food to Gaza, where Hamas is holding some 200 Israeli hostages. Truckloads of international
02:46 aid for Gaza's 2.2 million residents have lined up at the Rafah border with Egypt, which had been
02:51 closed since the hostilities began. Biden succeeded in persuading Israel to allow this aid to enter
02:57 from Egypt, but the Israeli Prime Minister's office says Israel will not allow the transfer
03:02 of aid from its territory to Gaza until the Israeli hostages are freed. What is needed in
03:08 Gaza now is an immediate access. This corridor at Rafah needs to be opened as soon as possible.
03:17 There's an absolute need for fuel, water, food and of course medicines and medical supplies.
03:27 The supplies are ready. They're at the border. They're waiting to get in. Israel has ordered
03:33 more than a million Palestinians to leave northern Gaza and move to the south, saying it's for their
03:38 own safety. Close to half a million have done so, including Fida Al-Arraj, who works with the
03:44 British charity Oxfam in Gaza. Along with her husband, five children and mother-in-law, she
03:50 says she's moved three times since the war began and is now in Rafah, near the border with Egypt.
03:56 We are seeking a safer place because of the children mainly and because of my mother-in-law.
04:02 She's not capable of like walking and running and so we are seeking safety even though like
04:10 I doubt something called safety still exists in the whole of Gaza.
04:15 The Palestinian Health Authority and the World Health Organization in Gaza say more than three
04:20 thousand people have been killed since the war began, including 1500 women and children. The
04:26 number of dead and wounded has increased considerably after the hospital attack.
04:30 My cousin, his family was bombed in their house. His mother, his wife and his five kids were blown
04:38 to bits. We didn't even have bodies to bury. With the conflict escalating and an Israeli
04:45 ground assault on Gaza expected soon, Al-Arraj says she and other Palestinians worry that life
04:51 in Gaza will become even more dangerous. Linda Gradstein, VOA News, Jerusalem.
04:57 At this juncture, we turn to our colleague, Ala Sanduan of PTV Cordillera. Ala?
05:07 Good morning Philippines. This is the official campaign to end the 2023 Barangay and Sangniang
05:15 Kabataan elections. We are joined by the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the
05:22 Barangay Officials. This is DILG, the official and effective service that we are choosing to
05:30 support in the upcoming election campaign. We are also joined by the Agency for the Inventory of
05:37 Documents and Records of the Barangay LGU. We are also joined by the LINAC, the Barangay's
05:44 Chief of Staff. This is DILG, the BSKE's representative for the current and future elections.
05:52 We are also joined by the officials who are supporting the candidates and the candidates
06:01 who are preparing for the election.
06:05 So that when the new set of barangay and SK officials enter, the transition is well-organized,
06:12 there is a turnover that will take place. If it is not well-organized in the replacement or new
06:19 sets of barangay officials, we can chase them, the COA can chase them, and the DILG can sue them.
