00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the funniest, cleverest,
00:11 and downright savage chirping cots on an NFL field.
00:19 Number 10.
00:20 Steve Smith Football is a highly competitive sport with
00:24 each game worth more than those of any other major American sports league.
00:29 So it's not surprising that players can get wrapped up in their performance.
00:33 Which is exactly what happened with wide receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Aqib Tlaib in 2013.
00:45 Smith's Carolina Panthers and Tlaib's New England Patriots were both in the midst of
00:49 a playoff push, and it showed, with the two players getting into consistent tussles both
00:54 during and after plays.
00:57 Smith ultimately got the better of Tlaib, as the Panthers eked out a four-point win.
01:10 In a post-game interview, Smith threw some further shade on Tlaib, adding insult to injury.
01:22 Number 9.
01:23 Chad Johnson When it comes to trash-talking, sometimes
01:26 reverse psychology works as well as the direct approach.
01:30 Chad Johnson, also known as Chad Ochocinco, was one of the biggest personalities in the
01:35 game during his tenure in the 2000s.
01:38 If you weren't a Cincinnati Bengals fan at the time, you probably couldn't stand him,
01:42 nor could some of his opponents.
01:46 We could honestly make a whole video on his antics, but our favorite comes in a game against
01:51 division rival, the Baltimore Ravens.
01:58 At one point, Johnson started conversing with Ravens defensive tackle, Haloti Nauta, until
02:03 Nauta's teammate Bart Scott broke up the tete-a-tete, that is, prompting Johnson to get indignant.
02:19 From there, Johnson played up the innocent card, even claiming that he loves Scott.
02:31 Number 8.
02:32 Josh Norman Another former Carolina Panther, cornerback
02:38 Josh Norman was mic'd up during a game against the division rival Atlanta Falcons in 2015.
02:45 Back then, the Falcon star wide receiver was Julio Jones, but considering this was the
02:50 year the Panthers only lost one regular season game, Jones was on the wrong end of a 38-0
02:55 route, and at the wrong end of a matchup against Norman.
02:59 Norman's enthusiasm is absolutely palpable, and when he wasn't taunting Jones, he was
03:05 doing so to fellow wide receiver Eric Weems.
03:09 Honestly, we're of the opinion that if Norman was on the losing end of this one, he wouldn't
03:17 be able to help himself, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
03:35 Number 7.
03:36 Tyron Matthew In college, safety Tyron Matthew earned himself
03:41 the nickname "Honey Badger".
03:42 If you know anything about the real-life beast, you know that the Honey Badger doesn't care.
03:47 And apparently, neither does Matthew.
03:52 Matthew too was mic'd up during his Kansas City Chiefs contest with the Los Angeles Chargers
03:56 in 2020, and he didn't mince words with taunting the other team.
04:05 From criticizing the size of the offensive players to threatening to play all 11 positions,
04:11 Matthew's vocal performance was nearly as strong as his physical performance.
04:15 Even if there had been fans in attendance in Los Angeles during this COVID-restricted
04:19 game, we have a feeling Matthew still would have been the loudest person in the stadium.
04:29 Number 6.
04:30 Ray Lewis One of the most legendary linebackers ever
04:41 to play the game, Ray Lewis is practically synonymous with Baltimore Ravens' playoff
04:46 success.
04:47 He's also well-known for being one of the loudest trash-talkers, and as such, we've
04:51 been rewarded with countless minutes of him getting loud on the gridiron.
04:57 From telling opposing players to get off the field to shouting, Lewis was football bravado
05:04 at its very finest.
05:06 We could try to pick out one particular moment, but it's honestly hard to parse seeing as
05:11 he was seemingly always on.
05:13 We can see why Lewis was such an intimidating presence on the field, to say nothing of his
05:18 physical acumen.
05:24 Number 5.
05:25 Jalen Ramsey It's not just opposing players that cornerback
05:35 Jalen Ramsey has relished in giving an earful.
05:38 He has also clapped back at fans a few times, as evidenced by this playful clip.
05:43 Back when Ramsey was suiting up for the Jacksonville Jaguars, a visit to the rival Tennessee Titans
05:49 stadium resulted in some hometown fans giving him a hard time during warm-ups.
05:53 They told Ramsey that he was in for a long day, but Ramsey retorted that he's never had
05:58 a long day when dealing with the Titans.
06:12 It's all in good competitive fun as the fans are clearly getting a kick out of the interaction.
06:17 In case you're wondering, the Titans fans had the last laugh as the Jags lost 30-9.
06:21 Number 4.
06:27 Phillip Rivers
06:42 If this list is any indication, there seems to be a positive correlation between trash-talking
06:47 and defensive players.
06:49 Phillip Rivers, meanwhile, may have spent 17 seasons as a quarterback on offense.
06:53 But that didn't stop him from garnering a reputation as one of the biggest trash-talkers
06:57 in the league.
07:04 Over the years, several players have attested to Rivers being one of the funniest guys on
07:08 the field.
07:09 And watching clips of his delivery and his signature southern twang, we can definitely
07:13 see what they mean.
07:23 Rivers wasn't at all shy about celebrating even the game's smallest victories.
07:28 And when he scored big, you can bet he turned his shtick up to 11.
07:42 Number 3.
07:44 Cam Newton
07:45 Speaking of quarterbacks, Cam Newton definitely had something to brag about while in his prime,
07:50 winning the league MVP award in 2015.
07:53 While technically a free agent as of this writing, he was known for being as energetic
07:57 with his words as his mobile playing style.
08:08 We especially liked this clip of him giving then Buffalo Bills cornerback and former teammate
08:12 Captain Munderland the business during a joint practice and training camp.
08:16 Not to mention Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver.
08:25 Then there's this clip of Newton playfully ribbing a referee for his youthful appearance.
08:37 We just hope that the ref took it all in stride and it didn't backfire on Newton during important
08:41 calls.
08:42 Number 2.
08:44 Richard Sherman
08:51 So far, most of these clips have come when players were mic'd up and not necessarily
08:55 directing their trash talk to media outlets.
08:58 But we couldn't pass up this infamous encounter with then Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard
09:02 Sherman.
09:03 In the NFC Championship game for the 2013 season, the Seahawks sealed a victory against
09:08 the San Francisco 49ers when a Sherman tip resulted in an endzone interception.
09:19 As great as the moment was, it somewhat got overshadowed by Sherman's celebratory interview,
09:25 in which he laid into the intended receiver on the play, Michael Crabtree.
09:35 In a bit of irony, Sherman eventually signed with the 49ers upon being released, but he
09:39 was public enemy number one in San Francisco for a while there.
10:05 Number 1.
10:06 Shannon Sharp
10:08 Most of these instances of trash talk are momentary barbs, but this one is a full-on
10:14 bit.
10:15 In a game back in 1996, the Denver Broncos visited the New England Patriots and put up
10:20 dozens of points.
10:21 Confident in the team's impending victory, Broncos tight end Shannon Sharp had some fun
10:26 with Patriots fans.
10:28 With an important-looking red phone on the sideline, Sharp pretended to call the president
10:32 and send in the National Guard because they were "killing" the Patriots.
10:43 He continually assured fans that, well, not fast enough for the Patriots who eventually
10:51 lost the game 34-8.
10:53 And if we were Pat's fans at that point, we'd probably find it hard not to chuckle
10:57 at Sharp's antics.
11:02 Who's your favorite trash talker in football?
11:08 Chirp about it in the comments.
