00:00 This just in, Tyler Van Dyke is a game time decision tonight.
00:05 - You are locked on Canes,

00:14 (upbeat music)
00:17 - I am Alex Dono, he's Brian Smith,
00:25 my colleague at allhurricanes.com.
00:27 And we're here for an emergency pregame episode
00:30 of Locked On Canes, because Pete Famel
00:33 has just reported, Brian, sources,
00:36 Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke
00:38 is a game time decision against Clemson tonight.
00:40 He's been limited in practice this week
00:42 and will warm up and attempt to play.
00:45 So we're not gonna know until shortly before kickoff
00:49 if QB1 is ready to play tonight.
00:50 Now, Brian, I have reason to believe
00:53 that if Van Dyke doesn't play, that Emery Williams
00:57 would be the guy who starts.
00:59 So we're talking about a true freshman
01:01 potentially getting his first collegiate start
01:04 against the Clemson Tigers tonight.
01:07 Let's talk about Emery,
01:09 'cause you covered him in high school,
01:11 Elite 11, all that good stuff, Brian.
01:14 You think he's ready for this?
01:17 - No. (laughs)
01:19 Nor should he be.
01:20 Freshman quarterbacks should not be playing in major games.
01:24 And to put it in perspective for people,
01:26 the guy in Chapel Hill, Drake May, redshirted.
01:29 That's how hard quarterback is for freshmen.
01:32 He's good.
01:33 It's just not a natural thing to do.
01:35 Being that it is likely to be Emery, if it's not Tyler,
01:40 here's what I know.
01:41 As an Elite 11 quarterback, he was a standout
01:43 out in Los Angeles.
01:44 I saw him for three days.
01:46 When I went to see him at Milton High School
01:48 up by Pensacola watching practice,
01:50 he's a leader, he's a kid that's very accurate,
01:53 and he can make progressions after the snap.
01:55 He's advanced, but this is Clemson.
01:58 They're gonna show him 20 million different things
02:00 before the snap, and 20 million more things after the snap.
02:04 It's just trying to bait him.
02:06 How well Shannon Dawson and the offense adapt,
02:09 and how do you even do that,
02:10 are some really interesting questions,
02:12 but it's gonna be difficult to consistently
02:15 move the football methodically down the field.
02:17 The Canes are gonna have to come up
02:18 with some chunkyardage plays tonight
02:20 if he is indeed the starting quarterback.
02:22 - And if Emery Williams is not,
02:23 and if it is Tyler Van Dyke, it would stand to reason
02:27 he's not gonna be 100% Brian,
02:29 but it's up to Tyler to decide how he feels in the warmups,
02:33 and it's up to coaches to decide if he's healthy enough
02:35 to give the team the best chance to win tonight.
02:38 If it does end up a Van Dyke who's good enough to play
02:42 or healthy enough to play tonight,
02:44 how much of a difference is that?
02:45 And obviously, TBD has not had his best couple of games,
02:48 but the opportunity Miami has to win,
02:50 the difference between Van Dyke or Emery,
02:52 what do you expect that to be?
02:54 - I mean, the difference between your veteran
02:58 who started since 2021, the back half,
03:02 I mean, I don't even know if you can put a number
03:04 on the percentage there.
03:06 You just can't have a true freshman
03:08 as your starting quarterback in his first start
03:11 be against Clemson.
03:12 I don't care if this was in Mario Cristobal's backyard.
03:15 I would take Clemson, and I'm sure most people would too.
03:19 I think that if he can go, I would give him credit,
03:22 but only Tyler, and repeat, only Tyler can really know.
03:27 When you're hurt, man,
03:28 and he's not the most mobile guy anyway,
03:32 and he got injured twice last year,
03:35 those kinds of things are gonna come back into your head.
03:38 Am I really ready for this?
03:40 'Cause he's gonna get walloped sometime tonight if he plays,
03:42 even if he was 100%.
03:43 Clemson's good.
03:45 They've got guys going to the NFL in the front level,
03:47 the mid level, and all the way at the back end.
03:49 They got players.
03:50 So he has to make a decision.
03:52 And honestly, I would worry if I was a coach
03:54 that he tried to force himself to play.
03:57 Not only does that necessarily hurt Miami's chances,
03:59 he doesn't need to get re-injured more or something else.
04:03 - It happened last year against Florida State.
04:05 - Oh, absolutely.
04:06 The second time, that second game when he came back,
04:08 I'm like, he doesn't look right to me.
04:10 And immediately he got hurt again,
04:12 but I don't wish that upon anybody,
04:14 but I know he wants to compete and it's Clemson.
04:16 These are the games that you sign up
04:18 to go to the U to play.
04:20 It's really unfortunate that he's injured in any capacity,
04:24 but we'll see.
04:26 - Yeah, so again, we're here, an emergency episode,
04:29 because Pete Thamel has reported Miami quarterback,
04:32 Tyler Van Dyke, is a game time decision against Clemson,
04:36 been limited in practice this week,
04:38 and will warm up and attempt to play.
04:41 And listen, if Van Dyke doesn't end up playing,
04:44 obviously I did an episode earlier this week
04:47 saying he would play,
04:48 because that's what the coaches said on Monday.
04:50 That's what Mario Cristobal and Shannon Dawson said.
04:52 I don't blame them for saying that,
04:54 because A, a lot of things can change Monday to Saturday.
04:57 Who knows, you know, the rollercoaster
04:59 of Van Dyke status since that time.
05:01 And listen, if you don't have to,
05:02 you don't have to give your opponent any free information.
05:06 As far as Emery Williams goes,
05:08 if he does get the nod tonight on the season,
05:10 he's made three appearances in relief in games.
05:14 You know, Miami's been way ahead in,
05:16 he's 12 for 15 on the year, 144 yards,
05:19 zero touchdowns, zero interceptions.
05:22 This would definitely be a baptism by fire if he does play.
05:25 And I appreciate, Brian Smith, your time,
05:27 and I hope you don't go too far,
05:29 'cause we'll probably have to have a chat again,
05:31 maybe on Monday or early this week,
05:32 because there's a lot of smoke now
05:35 that five-star defensive lineman Armando Blunt,
05:38 who's committed to Miami, may soon flip to Florida State.
05:41 So if we find out more about that,
05:44 I may have to pick your brain.
05:45 So hopefully, hopefully you don't stay
05:47 too far away here, Brian.
05:49 - All right, I appreciate it, Alex.
05:50 I look forward to it.
05:51 - We'll talk to everyone again after the game
05:53 on another episode of "Locked on, Canes,"
05:55 part of the awesome Locked On Podcast Network,
05:57 your team, every day.
