Interview with K.J. Wallace and Paul Moala after Boston College Loss
Transcript
00:00 >> Who is it?
00:02 >> Chad.
00:04 >> KJ, just how tough was their quarterback to defend for
00:08 60 minutes in the rushing offensive line?
00:11 >> We definitely respected him, respected his game.
00:16 We planned to be prepared for that all week as far as how we went about our
00:20 defensive calls.
00:21 Honestly, I think for the majority of the game, we did a fairly good job of containing
00:25 him.
00:27 But he's a good player, obviously, so we showed him respect as far as our game plan.
00:30 And we got the results for the results.
00:33 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:35 >> Brent.
00:38 >> Everybody talks about Castellanos, but their running back really got
00:43 the tough yards out there today.
00:46 Of course, he had that one long run on a quick hitter.
00:50 How difficult was it to bring him down?
00:52 It seemed like he carried some bodies for extra yards today.
00:56 >> Yeah, I mean, it is what it is.
01:01 Watching the film, we knew that their backs were hard runners.
01:05 Really just on us to bring him down and we didn't really do a good job.
01:10 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:14 >> Okay.
01:16 >> Guys, something I ask the offense is how do you not let plays snowball?
01:20 You have 21 extra points and then the offense that did the punt,
01:24 took down Emerson in the second half.
01:26 How do you avoid letting one bad play during the multiple bad plays?
01:30 >> It's like a next play mentality.
01:34 Coach Key, Coach Sher, he and Coach Taylor,
01:38 we talk about it all the time as far as the next play mentality.
01:41 And when bad things happen, we almost are like, we want to be on the field.
01:45 We want to be the ones that respond.
01:47 We want to be the ones to handle that pressure.
01:49 I go by something, pressure is a privilege.
01:52 That's something I've been going by for a long time now in my life.
01:56 And I feel like you want those moments where it's like, I have the ball,
02:00 I have to do something above average to settle down what's going on.
02:06 And a lot of times, I mean, it's a lot of plays in a football game.
02:11 So harping on one play that's happening isn't gonna allow you to make
02:15 the next great play, so that's definitely how we approach it,
02:20 it's a next play mentality.
02:22 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:25 >> One of the words that Coach has been using and
02:27 also a lot of the quarterbacks have been using, consistency.
02:30 There's a lack of consistency.
02:31 So how do you guys find consistency on this team to be able to play all four
02:34 quarters?
02:35 And then when it comes to being that fourth quarter, you were outscored by 21
02:38 points.
02:39 Was some of that maybe just fatigue because you guys were on the field so
02:42 much due to the turnovers?
02:43 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:46 >> I mean, along the lines of consistency, I think it's just trying to do
02:49 everything right outside of football.
02:51 Being the same person you are on the football field out in the classroom and
02:56 things like that.
02:58 I think it's the details that kinda tend to catch us on the back end.
03:03 But as far as effort, I don't believe that we left anything in
03:09 the tank out there on the field as a defensive.
03:12 I think we ran well to the ball.
03:14 I just think that there was minor tweaks and
03:18 mishaps that happened out there on the field that didn't allow us to execute.
03:25 >> Sure, anything else?
03:28 Brian.
03:32 >> Coach P talked about how physical their offensive line was at the beginning
03:38 of the week.
03:39 What did you see, Paul, from that offensive line?
03:43 >> I mean, it just goes back to playing football and respecting the opponent.
03:48 They had big guys up front.
03:51 I think that we managed to handle them well as a front seven.
03:54 Yeah, I mean, as far as whether or not we executed well,
04:00 like I said back with the last question, I just don't think we executed well.
04:06 I don't think that it was a physicality thing.
04:10 From that standpoint, I don't think that it was anything that had to do
04:15 with the physical nature, I think it was more so just execution.
04:19 >> Go ahead.
04:24 >> This is for you guys.
04:26 Coach indicated there was some substitution issues,
04:28 particularly in some of the short yardage situations.
04:31 And I think one of the plays at least, he said there was only ten guys on the field.
04:35 Is there anything in particular going on that was causing confusion for
04:38 you guys in terms of getting,
04:40 giving her a person on the field and getting lined up?
04:49 >> I personally don't wanna answer that question.
04:55 Yeah, I think it just goes back to what I said earlier about details,
04:58 just trying to understand what's going on in the game and
05:04 understanding what personnel's gonna be out there on the field in certain situations.
05:08 And just being more detailed in our work.
05:11 I think that's what that whole deal is.
05:14 >> Got a fielder off the side.
05:16 >> Guys, you have a difficult test coming up next week.
05:21 How do you put this one on the side behind you, reset, and get ready for
05:25 what's coming?
05:27 >> Just an explain mentality.
05:30 Today there was also results.
05:32 We have five more opportunities to prove something to ourselves and
05:37 make right of it and we're just taking one opportunity at a time like we've been
05:40 doing all season, so that's all I can say.
05:46 >> Thank you guys.
