00:00 This is the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
00:04 full-size electric pickup truck.
00:07 (upbeat music)
00:09 The F-150 has been the top-selling truck for 44 years
00:18 and EVs are the way of the future.
00:21 So if you put electric motors and batteries
00:23 into such a high volume vehicle,
00:25 well, it has the potential to be a game changer,
00:28 not just for Ford, but for the entire industry.
00:31 So why should the loyal truck buyer
00:39 even consider the Lightning?
00:41 First off, the Lightning doesn't replace the F-150.
00:44 It just expands the family
00:46 with a sleeker-looking city cousin of sorts
00:50 with some pretty cool lighting and wheels.
00:53 And it comes with a lot of superlatives.
00:55 It's got two motors, front and back,
00:57 and a whole whack of batteries in the frame
01:01 between the rails.
01:02 It should be the quickest F-150,
01:04 zero to 60 in four and a half seconds.
01:07 Output, we're looking at about 563 horsepower
01:12 and 775 pound-feet of torque,
01:16 a range of about 300 miles.
01:18 That's with the extended range battery.
01:20 If you use the standard battery, torque stays the same.
01:23 Your horsepower goes down to about 426
01:26 and the range is about 230 miles.
01:29 The battery can also be used to power your tools
01:32 or your toys or even your home in a power outage.
01:35 This is also the first F-150
01:38 to get an independent rear suspension.
01:41 That'll not only improve the ride and handling,
01:43 but it addresses the issue
01:45 of trying to package that rear motor.
01:47 There aren't really any compromises.
01:49 It is a super crew cab, so you've got four full doors.
01:53 You've got a set of seat belts for five,
01:55 a five and a half foot bed.
01:57 You can tow 10,000 pounds,
01:59 payload of 2000 pounds and four-wheel drive.
02:04 Here's one thing a normal F-150 doesn't have, a frunk.
02:08 The thing is huge, probably the biggest one in the industry.
02:12 It's got 14.1 cubic feet.
02:14 It's got two levels to it.
02:16 It's lockable, sealable with a drain
02:19 in case it does get wet and muddy in there
02:21 and a lot of power outlets for a heck of a tailgate party.
02:25 Inside, the cab is very similar
02:27 to all of the rest of the F-150 family
02:30 with one giant exception,
02:32 this huge 15 and a half inch touchscreen
02:36 with a giant volume knob embedded into the bottom
02:39 and tons of apps to help you find where to go,
02:43 where to charge, even where the trails are.
02:45 The most startling thing, the price.
02:48 It starts for under $42,000.
02:51 There are four trim levels.
02:52 You go all the way up to a platinum,
02:54 which is probably in the $90,000 range.
02:57 Ford is starting to take reservations now,
02:59 $100 deposit, and it goes on sale in May of 2022.
