‘თავისუფაჲ ხატვა,’ translated as ‘free drawing,’ characterizes the artistic approach of Georgian artist Elene Chantladze. Her works often incorporate writing, stemming from her background as a poet and author before turning to painting. Chantladze embraces chance and spontaneity, using materials at hand, such as colored pencils, gouache, coffee, and even cardboard. Her process begins with abstract, non-representational layers, followed by the development of images based on chance markings. These images oscillate between abstraction and figuration, featuring isolated or densely populated scenes. They typically inhabit vaguely defined, theatrical spaces, occasionally suggesting landscapes or interiors. Chantladze’s subjects are drawn from her immediate surroundings, encompassing family, folklore, political events, and popular culture. Her works evoke a sense of earnestness and continuity, devoid of a distinct style or phases of discovery. The artist’s confidence in the painterly process and direct influences is evident throughout her body of work, which now receives its first institutional solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich. 02:04 Then I looked at what kind of figures I could see inside
02:07 and worked them out in the next painting.

02:31 What I love about this work is that there's a strong trust
02:35 in the external influences, or maybe also internal influences.
02:39 It's very close to biography.
02:42 There are many family portraits or figures from the family,
02:45 sometimes in a wish-fulfilling constellation,
02:48 like a bridal gown,
02:51 a happy marriage,
02:54 a loving attachment to children,
02:56 the harmony between man and nature, and people and animals.
03:01 But there are also very sad themes, like loneliness.
03:06 You can see that a lot of figures have low eyelids,
03:09 even if they're just dot-dot-dot faces.
03:14 There's often a kind of sadness that's reversed,
03:19 which can be found in biographies, too.
03:22 There are also many political events,
03:25 just like in literature.
03:28 There's also figures from plays,
03:32 or literature like Victor Hugo's "The Laughing Man".
03:38 The books that influenced him
03:41 are depicted in the same way as family portraits
03:44 or Georgian political events, demonstrations,
03:48 the invasion of the Russians.
03:50 There are also representations,
03:53 like "I in love with nature".
03:57 I think there's a strong reference to Georgian natural philosophy.

05:03 Her technique is that she creates an irreplaceable foundation
05:07 without planning or compositional intentions.
05:10 She creates a layer to project something.
05:15 She does that with her fingers, sometimes with brushes,
05:19 with all kinds of utensils,
05:21 everything that is in her hands.
05:23 She used colours, like gouache,
05:27 or ballpoint pens, as you can see.
05:30 But also jam or wine.
05:33 Or when there's a fruit, she squishes it
05:36 and smears it on top.
05:38 Then she builds the next step on top,
05:41 "What do I see in there?"
05:42 She's always clear about where these themes come from.
05:46 It's not like the surrealists,
05:50 who believe in the subconscious and new forms,
05:54 but these are things from their environment,
05:57 and that's how she presents them.

06:02 One of my first jobs in Switzerland
06:26 was an intern at the fair.
06:29 That was the first year of the new director.
06:33 It was also the first year for the gallery
06:36 where Elene Chandlatze is, Elzig Weisser in Tbilisi.

06:44 with the new young galleries and artists.
06:47 I got on well with the gallery in Georgia.
06:52 They showed me their works on the iPad.
06:55 I was completely blown away.
06:57 I asked, "How old is she?"
06:59 "Oh, 77. Is that her now?"
07:02 I was always interested in that,
07:05 and asked, "What about these works?
07:08 When will I be able to read her poems?"
07:11 Then I had the opportunity to do an exhibition
07:14 at the Kunsthalle Zurich.
07:16 I thought, "There's no institutional exhibition
07:21 by Elene Chandlatze yet.
07:23 This would be a great opportunity
07:27 to show her to a large audience
07:30 who are interested in contemporary painting."
07:54 Elene has about 600 works by now,
07:59 because she paints a picture almost every day.
08:01 There are different formats,
08:05 you could say.
08:07 Some are more like drawings,
08:08 more in the abstraction.
08:10 Some are very figurative,
08:13 some have writing, etc.
08:14 I wanted to try,
08:16 because it's a kind of overview exhibition,
08:18 to find a good balance
08:20 between works that are more like drawings
08:23 or that are more like paintings,
08:25 that express different media and sub-grounds.
08:28 It wasn't an easy choice,
08:31 but I think we have some strong, good examples
