A potential Mitsubishi Delica of the future was previewed at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo with the reveal of the dramatic Mitsubishi D:X Concept. The bold plug-in hybrid has a similar shape to Delicas of the past, but considering it's a concept, it's much more extravagant.

Mitsubishi describes the D:X Concept as an electric crossover MPV that is said to combine the spacious cabin of an MPV with the handling of an SUV. The exterior design includes a reinterpretation of the company's existing Dynamic Shield front fascia with a skid plate and LED daytime running lights positioned at the base of the windshield.

The firm's designers then created a series of work fenders for the D:X Concept that would "inspire a sense of power" and finished the entire exterior in a striking copper tone inspired by luxurious, opulent lighting. The concept also features a large storage bin in the roof, and there are T-shaped LED lights at the rear to complement those at the front.

Mitsubishi designed the new generation Delica as a six-seat vehicle with a 2+2+2 seating arrangement. The front seats swivel and there's a transparent hood that works with VR to show what's right in front of the wheels. The D:X Concept also rocks a brown leather-wrapped flat-bottom and flat-top steering wheel with a central screen that displays important vehicle information. There is also a digital dashboard and an interactive AI-powered concierge.

Yamaha also played a role in the creation of the D:X Concept by developing a custom audio system that includes speakers in the headrests. Little detail has been given about the concept's powertrain, but Mitsubishi says it has an environmentally friendly PHEV with an electric 4WD system.

“The Mitsubishi D:X Concept is a concept car that brings together the best of Mitsubishi Motors technologies, especially our electrification and all-wheel drive technologies, with the aim of creating a carbon-neutral society,” said Mitsubishi Motors chairman and chief. Executive officer Takao Kato said at the launch of the concept. “We will continue to deliver satisfying mobility lifestyles that awaken riders' adventurous spirit and bring excitement to everyone on board.”
