Analyzing why San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is not the next Joe Mont

00:00 A couple of weeks ago I asked you what Brock Purdy and Joe Montana have in common and you
00:05 respectfully didn't roll your eyes. You actually answered the question and took it seriously. Now
00:09 tell me what Brock Purdy and Joe Montana don't have in common. Why is Brock not the next Joe?
00:16 Okay, Joe was a winner. Joe was the kind of quarterback if the game was close and they
00:26 were behind it was never over. He was so precise, so calm. He owned the game. This kid, he doesn't
00:38 have that. He's not calm. Did you see his face yesterday? In addition, he failed. He didn't lose
00:49 Brock Purdy. He failed. He had two chances to win the game and he threw picks on the last two series.
00:58 Joe didn't do things like that. Steve didn't do things like that. So it's not that he they went
01:03 for an out. He gave away the game twice. He gave it away and then he got another chance and he gave
01:09 it away again. Joe didn't do things like that. And here's the thing. His line wasn't that bad.
01:14 He I think he had a one or two pass a rating. Who cares? He gave away the game. Iggy and I always
01:20 talk about the crisis moment. Last night he had two crisis moments where he could have won the
01:26 game. He was not up to it either time. And again, I wasn't at the game, but what I saw the passes
01:32 that Kyle asked him to throw were not that difficult. It's not like you could say Kyle
01:37 asked too much of him. I didn't think he did. I think they were well within his capability
01:42 and he and he blew it. I don't know why he blew it. I don't know what goes on his mind on in his
01:48 mind. Joe Montana didn't do things like that. I'm going to tell you something else.
01:52 And this I got from a friend of mine. It's it's not my thought. A former coach.
01:58 Brock Purdy is great at attacking zone defenses. Iggy said once to not to me once the Niners do
02:09 all that shifting in motion and all that. And now he's ready to get the ball pretty.
02:14 He probably knows if he's facing zone exactly where he's going to throw it right away. He's
02:19 very bright, very perceptive. Not so much a man to man to man defense, and there's a difference
02:27 in zone defense. There's a lot of room for inaccurate passes.
02:35 Because the coverage is not that tight, so the catching radius is larger. We hear here all over
02:42 the place, man to man defense, which is where Cleveland killed them. There's a guy right on you
02:48 if they're good. And there is not a place all over the place like against zone defense.
02:55 You have to be like Joe throwing to Dwight Clark between the eight and the seven.
02:59 And Joe did it every time. I don't know if this kid can do it. He he has a nice completion
03:05 percentage. I'm not sure he's that accurate. And he has to. He sure wasn't in the last two games.
03:10 And he has to show it. Yeah. One more thing about Brock, the arm. He had the surgery. We were so
03:19 surprised how he came back so quickly. And I think the issue the question was, is it going to get
03:25 stronger as the year goes on or the opposite? And I wonder if the opposite is happening. The last
03:30 two games, he just hasn't looked like himself. And this is one of those things where it's like
03:34 you didn't have a full off season. Your arm is experienced fatigue. Is this arm fatigue?
03:40 He doesn't seem 100 percent. I think he told Trey, but he's not fully there yet. He said,
03:45 yeah, I wonder if he's going to make it through the season if he has. We'll talk about that in
03:50 a minute, but he looks like he's trending the wrong direction and they could always blame it
03:53 on the arm. Says Evan Harvey. And then they'll bring in Sam Donald to the next Steve Young,
03:59 so there wouldn't be any problem.
