American jazz pianist, composer and arranger, chiefly in the bebop and hard bop genres. Sr. Elmo Sylvester Hope from New York City was an artist with a problematic life due to problems with law caused by drugs. From 1957 to 1961 he was forced to migrate from NY to Los Angeles, and therefore always due to the same problems to return to NY. "With Frank Butler and Jimmy Bond" was recorded in LA: boppish lines have room to stretch out and luxuriate in their complexity, joined by a deeply synpathetic rhythm section. The album is pervaded by a slight melancholy, without helming the remarkable lightness of Hope's playing.
