00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 How are you, man?
00:07 Hello, Jay Stockwell.
00:09 I'm better than your car, that's for sure.
00:12 Oh, do I have a story to tell you?
00:15 Tell me a story.
00:16 Tell me a story.
00:18 By the way, I'm just back, just got back from Gloucester, Massachusetts, your neck of the
00:23 wave.
00:24 Gloucester, Massachusetts.
00:25 I have a lot of relatives from Gloucester and they talk like this, "Oh my God, Rob or
00:33 Bob or whatever you call yourself, how are you?
00:36 It's nice to see you.
00:37 Let's get some lobsters and some steam.
00:40 It's very nice."
00:43 So I was really excited for this trip because it's with a very senior client who will go
00:50 nameless, but he took me to the Myopia Club.
00:53 Have you ever heard of that?
00:55 Have you, Bob Frady?
00:56 I have.
00:57 Top 100 golf course in the United States of America.
01:02 I lose my vision on that course sometimes.
01:03 I get rather myopic.
01:08 And so I was really, really excited to go and then we had a big AI meeting with a client
01:15 who will also go nameless, which went really well.
01:20 Super excited about our acquisition of Arch's AI, by the way, but that's a separate topic,
01:24 not for this podcast, but it was a great trip on both fronts.
01:30 But I was leaving to go to the trip at 5.45 AM and the night before, George and I had
01:36 been to Nebraska, so both our golf clubs were in there because we'd played golf with Uncle
01:41 Pat and Uncle Vern down in Omaha last Friday.
01:44 So I go out there to take George's clubs out on Monday night and I accidentally left the
01:53 suburban trunk open.
01:56 So I get out there the next morning and the car is beeping.
01:59 It's beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
02:01 So I'm like, "Okay, the car has power.
02:03 It just needs to be- Help me!
02:06 Help me!
02:07 Help me!"
02:08 So what do I do?
02:09 I put my clubs and my bag and my computer bag, my roller and my computer bag in the
02:14 back and I shut the back.
02:16 Well guess what?
02:17 Because it's been open all night, there's no...
02:19 The battery is dead, completely dead.
02:23 And I can't get in.
02:26 So there I am.
02:28 There I am.
02:29 And I thought I put my little sort of 2-in-1 man purse in there too, which keeps my phone
02:33 and my keys and my AirPod and everything.
02:35 AirPod's lovely.
02:36 And so I'm like, "Where's my phone?"
02:42 And I finally realized that I'd set it on top of Betsy's car.
02:44 So I had it.
02:45 So I called OnStar and I had them try to start the car.
02:48 No.
02:49 Had them try to unlock the car.
02:50 No.
02:51 Car's dead.
02:52 There's no power.
02:53 There's no power.
02:54 There's no power.
02:55 There's no power.
02:56 There's no power.
02:57 And I was like, "Oh, I'm going to have to start it with it."
02:58 So they were like talking roadside assistance.
02:59 And then I remembered, "Hey, wait a minute.
03:00 The key has a manual thing."
03:01 And so I went and did the manual key and got in the front of the car through the manual
03:04 key.
03:05 By now it's 7 o'clock or 6 o'clock.
03:08 Flight leaves in one hour at 7.
03:09 And I get in the car right around 6 and I order an Uber right before that, but I forget
03:15 to push the final button on Uber.
03:17 So it takes me five minutes to get in the car, crawl to the back, open the back door,
03:22 get my bag, my computer bag and my golf bag all out via the side door and ready to go.
03:28 And I think right then about Uber's going to be pulling up.
03:30 Will I get outside?
03:31 Well, I hadn't ordered it yet.
03:32 So now it's 6.05 and hit the Uber.
03:35 Thank God they were within five minutes and they picked me up at 6.10.
03:39 Flight leaves at 7.
03:40 So I'm like, "Oh boy."
03:42 And so I say to the guy, I said, "Dude, we got to go.
03:44 We got to go, go, go."
03:46 Get to the airport.
03:48 No line whatsoever.
03:49 Go right up to the first class station.
03:52 I said, "Ma'am, I'm running late and I need these clubs because I'm playing golf today."
03:57 And she just did it cheating the way I am.
04:01 She just put the tags on, got the clubs to the back.
04:04 And it gives you a little bit of confidence when you get the text from Delta that says
04:09 your bags are on board.
04:12 And of course I was on gate 20.
04:15 So it was a long walk.
04:16 Like E62 or something like that?
04:17 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:19 So I finally got there, but it all turned out.
04:23 And on the way home, the Uber driver helped me jump the car, found jumper cables.
04:28 I thought I had a pair.
04:29 Turns out I have two pairs of jumper cables.
04:32 And got my car started this afternoon and everything's well and good now.
04:36 But what a-
04:37 Here's a joke for you, Jay Stockwell.
04:41 What do Jeff Sims and Jay Stockwell's Suburban have in common?
04:48 Neither one starts.
04:52 Exactly, exactly.
04:57 So by the way, this is a Myopia Hunt Club jersey that I was given there when I went
05:02 and I ran.
05:03 What a great horse.
05:04 Very relevant for the-
05:05 1865, 1865, Bob.
05:06 Three US Opens.
05:07 So the horse is like 3000 yards long?
05:13 It's 6700 yards.
05:16 And they've offered to do the US Open there multiple times.
05:18 Of course, they'd have to change it, but the membership has resisted that because they
05:22 like the character of it.
05:23 That's a very New England thing.
05:26 Listen there, mister, in your US Open, I don't think we're going to let you have your tournament
05:31 here because we don't want to change a damn thing.
05:36 We're going to let you have your free New Englander.
05:39 Yes, not like the Gortons Fishman, Gortons of Gloucester says no.
05:43 Gloucester was impressive, really.
05:45 So apparently, I stayed at the Bupert Hotel.
05:49 It just didn't have a nice hotel, and apparently the guy that owns New Balance built the hotel,
05:56 and it's a nice hotel, dude.
05:58 This is something you've got to take Mrs. Frady out there and visit this place because
06:02 it was cool.
06:03 I'd love to.
06:04 It would be great.
06:05 It would be great.
06:06 Okay, let's move on.
06:07 Let's move on.
06:08 We should yak it.
06:09 We're yakking here.
06:10 So anyway, good to be back.
06:11 Yeah, so we got a game this week, UB, and it's versus Purdue.
06:16 I've been pretty optimistic about the schedule, but we've got a little wrinkle in that we
06:22 had a pretty big set of injuries here last weekend, and it looks like our offensive line
06:30 is three guys go down, two out for the season.
06:35 Right.
06:36 That's why I'm not wearing a hat right now is because my hat went on the injury reserve,
06:42 so I have to wait for the hat to heal up to fit back on my big melon.
06:48 I do have to say the forehead's looking pretty good.
06:50 I could write some plays on there.
06:54 You could write a freaking opus on this forehead in normal size type.
07:01 You could have a mini series on here, all eight episodes could go up there.
07:05 I could write the 44 yard belly option play and draw the pass on that melon.
07:13 It would only go this far.
07:14 You'd still have extra melon.
07:15 You could write two passes on there if you wanted to.
07:20 So we got a challenge this week.
07:22 The stats, the Husker Rack stats are in our favor though again.
07:26 Pro Football Focus has us ranked at 52, they're ranked at 69.
07:31 We obviously have the edge on defense, they have a little bit of an edge on offense, particularly
07:35 in passing.
07:36 So to me, the whole game comes down to can we execute with the new offensive line, not
07:41 have a bunch of penalties.
07:43 But there's some seasoned guys coming in.
07:45 We've got Teddy Prochaska, you just mentioned the other one right before we started.
07:50 Emery Lutovsky.
07:51 Lutovsky, yeah.
07:52 Hopefully the stats advantage.
07:53 The stats advantage.
07:54 The stats advantage.
07:56 Advantage.
07:57 Well, it's a two and a half point line, right?
07:59 I am never going to leave a Vegas line in Nebraska again.
08:03 Staying away from it.
08:04 I'm still bitter about last week.
08:06 I saw an interview with Matt Ruhle talking about the game and he's like, "This is a very,
08:12 very even match."
08:13 Oh, no doubt.
08:14 Especially now with so many injuries.
08:17 Billy Kemp is out too, I think.
08:20 He's got a very simple approach.
08:22 It's like, it's going to come down to who plays better.
08:25 Forget all the stats.
08:27 Guys, just go out and play.
08:29 Win the down.
08:30 Win every down.
08:31 I really like this, how Matt really focuses guys on what's right before them instead of
08:40 the getting bowl eligible, potentially competing for the Big Ten.
08:43 Just win the game.
08:44 Win the doubt.
08:45 Win the day.
08:47 Get better.
08:48 Get 1% better.
08:49 That's such a theme in every time I listen to him.
08:51 It is the best way to live.
08:54 Handle what's in front of you.
08:55 The future will take care of itself.
08:57 Plan appropriately, but it's a very stoic way to live.
09:00 I like it.
09:01 It's like, just handle your business.
09:02 Don't worry so much about stuff you can't control.
09:04 No free suffering allowed.
09:07 That said, I do think that much like your car, Chessins will reemerge this week.
09:13 I don't know if it's this week, but he's going to reemerge and he's been such a great teammate.
09:16 Mark my words, it's this week and here's why.
09:20 Most of the injuries on the offensive line, they're going to end up stacking the box.
09:24 When they stack the box, somebody's going to get a little injured.
09:27 That might be just for a couple of plays, but I do think we'll see a sighting with a
09:33 helmet on, on the field of Jeff Sims.
09:36 Then it opens up the pass because he is a better passer, sometimes to our team, sometimes
09:40 to the other team, but he is a better passer than Harburg is.
09:45 Let's say this.
09:46 He's got a stronger arm.
09:47 He does.
09:48 I think Harburg has been more accurate, although he threw an interception last week.
09:52 Listen, I watched last week's game and I'm not going to ... The fan in me is happy that
09:57 they won, not a coach, not going to worry about it, but I would say that you will see
10:02 a Sims sighting this week.
10:03 That's my prediction for the game.
10:05 Okay.
10:06 I like it.
10:07 I like it.
10:10 Here's just a few specific things.
10:11 First of all, Emmett Johnson played really well last week.
10:15 Yeah, that's your guy.
10:16 He's from Minneapolis here.
10:17 Yeah, holy angels.
10:19 He's up here and I've got friends that know him.
10:21 Actually, one of my friends, one of our friends, Blake Nixon, knows him really well.
10:27 He had, I think, a breakout game last week.
10:30 My guess is we're going to see that there really bad.
10:33 It was funny though because when you watch it, it didn't seem like he was doing much
10:36 and then all of a sudden you look up, he's got 70 something yards and a rough game.
10:39 It's like, "Where did that come from?"
10:42 Good for him.
10:43 Glad to see it.
10:44 So, the Creams total defense is ranked 91 and their rushing defense is ranked 80, ours
10:49 is ranked 4.
10:51 So, they're giving up 153 yards a game.
10:53 So, I think they're going to run the ball.
10:59 Their passing efficiency on offense is 120, so they win that one and passing offense 232.
11:10 But it's a bunch of short yardage plays, so they're going to run the wheel routes, they're
11:15 going to run guys out of the backfield.
11:18 So, their passing total offense is 232, rushing offense 130, and their total offense 371.
11:27 That's ranked 78th, we're ranked 105.
11:29 So, they have a slight edge on offense in the pass game, but I like our defense to be
11:34 able to handle it.
11:35 So, I don't think they've encountered a defense like ours up to this point.
11:41 Ohio State had a pretty good defense.
11:44 Yeah.
11:45 Oh, that's true.
11:46 It's, who knows?
11:47 Who knows?
11:48 Yeah.
11:49 I have a guess though.
11:50 Would you like to hear my guess?
11:51 Sure, I would.
11:52 I don't think that Purdue's going to score more than 10 points.
11:58 I think Nebraska may score 11.
12:01 So, my prediction-
12:03 That's your call?
12:04 -is 14 to 10, Nebraska.
12:08 I'm going to go a little better than that for two reasons.
12:12 Number one, again, I think the emergence of Emmitt Johnson is going to give our running
12:16 game another dimension that it hasn't had.
12:21 And I think Malachi Coleman is going to get some more looks this week.
12:26 I think that the fans of Nebraska can be sure of one thing, that is, they're going to have
12:32 to hold their breath for most of three and a half quarters to figure out who's going
12:35 to win this game.
12:36 It's going to come down to something in the fourth quarter and everyone's going to be
12:38 like, "Oh, oh, oh, not again."
12:41 Yeah, pretty much.
12:43 So what's your number?
12:44 I'm going to say 21 to 10 because I think we're going to do better on, I think, again,
12:49 I think our rushing offense is going to be good.
12:52 I think we're going to get Malachi another touchdown.
12:57 And the defense, the reason why I'm wearing the black jersey today, I'm wearing my black
13:01 Nebraska shirt because the black shirts will be the story of the game.
13:06 Black shirts will wield this team to victory over Purdue.
13:10 They will harass and intimidate the Boilermakers because the Boilermakers may need a few Boilermakers
13:18 during the game to just give off the pain that they're going to feel inflicted by the
13:23 Blackshirts.
13:27 Although the Boilermakers is a unique name.
13:30 It's a team named after a drink.
13:32 Or is the drink named after the team?
13:34 I don't know.
13:35 But my dad used to drink Boilermakers all the time.
13:38 And what other teams are named after drinks?
13:41 Do you have the martinis anywhere?
13:43 Do you have the gin and soda anywhere?
13:45 Do you have the Stockwells anywhere?
13:47 Oh, and this is different.
13:49 I know of no other team with a booze name in the back end.
13:54 So if our listeners know of any booze named teams, I would love to hit it down in the
14:00 comments.
14:01 So I'm looking up the origin of Boilermaker.
14:03 Okay.
14:04 The Oxford English Dictionary widely regarded as the foremost authority on word origins
14:09 says the term Boilermaker was first used to refer to a craftsman who built and maintained
14:16 steam locomotives in 1834.
14:19 There you go.
14:20 I look up Boilermaker drink.
14:21 Okay.
14:22 What is the origin of Boilermaker drink?
14:24 In history, some suggest the drink gets its name from its popularity among Boilermakers,
14:28 the 19th century tradesmen who fabricated iron whirlers for steam ships and steam locomotives.
14:34 As the legend goes, to cap off a day of work, they would ask for a beer and a shot of whiskey
14:39 at their neighborhood bars.
14:40 So they are named after both engineers or, excuse me, engineer manufacturers and a drink.
14:49 That is awesome.
14:50 That is awesome.
14:51 Yeah.
14:52 So Boilermaker, the equivalent would be like the Nebraska corn squeezes or something like
14:56 that.
14:57 It would be-
14:58 No, no.
14:59 We could become the Nebraska corn alcohols.
15:01 Yeah, exactly.
15:02 High proof, high octane.
15:08 We are picking out some ethanol.
15:10 We both agree that there will be a victory this week for Nebraska.
15:15 And we're both calling an under because the over-under is great.
15:18 We're both calling an under because every time they've almost been under.
15:21 Somewhat limited offenses of the Big Ten West are coming to four.
15:25 Who knows?
15:26 It may be a big surprise, but I think it's supposed to be a little chilly, which will
15:29 be nice.
15:30 Maybe the wind's blowing.
15:31 If the wind's blowing, it might be three to two.
15:33 Oh, yeah.
15:34 What are we saying about the weather?
15:35 That's a good question.
15:36 Lincoln weather.
15:37 Ooh, 39 degrees.
15:38 Ooh, yeah.
15:39 Wow.
15:40 Boy, did we pick the right weekend to go last weekend.
15:43 Holy smokes.
15:44 Good running weather.
15:46 I am excited to see ... I just listen to ... The offensive line is injured, no doubt.
15:52 But the easiest part of offensive line play, from what I hear, since I am not an offensive
15:57 lineman, running the ball is easier than pass defense.
16:01 So precipitation, 40% chance during game time, Bob, which is a 230 game on Fox.
16:06 Have you ever gone to a football game where it's high 30s and raining outside?
16:11 Yeah, it's not good.
16:15 And it's miserable.
16:16 It's miserable for everyone except the players.
16:17 The players are running around.
16:18 They're hot.
16:19 It's no big deal.
16:20 As you are playing, everyone in the audience, it could get messy.
16:23 Everyone just missed it last week when it was just so ... I think I showed this in the
16:28 last pod.
16:29 There it is.
16:30 There it is.
16:31 The trophy.
16:32 That looks like something bad's about to happen.
16:33 I feel like I'm in Boystown or something.
16:34 Oh, be careful.
16:35 Yeah, we're generated.
16:36 Don't go there.
16:37 Why don't you grab that putter there, little Bobby?
16:38 Oh, boy.
16:39 Grab that putter.
16:40 Just 75.
16:41 That's going to be like a 40 degree difference at the game this week.
16:42 Well, that's an interesting wrinkle.
16:43 One other factor that we need to talk about.
16:44 Guess who went to Brazil that we know very well.
16:45 I don't know if you know this, but I know that there's a lot of people who went to Brazil
16:46 and they're like, "Oh, I'm going to Brazil.
16:47 I'm going to Brazil.
16:48 I'm going to Brazil."
16:49 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
16:50 You're going to Brazil?
16:51 You're going to Brazil?
16:52 You're going to Brazil?"
16:53 And they're like, "Oh, I'm going to Brazil.
16:54 I'm going to Brazil."
16:55 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
16:56 You're going to Brazil?
16:57 You're going to Brazil?"
16:59 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
17:00 You're going to Brazil?"
17:01 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
17:02 You're going to Brazil?"
17:03 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
17:04 You're going to Brazil?"
17:05 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?
17:06 You're going to Brazil?"
17:07 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:08 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:09 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:10 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:11 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:12 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:13 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:14 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
17:40 And they're like, "Oh, you're going to Brazil?"
18:08 Nope. Nope. My parents didn't even go to college. Nevermind my grandparents. So that's uh, it's a
18:16 whole new set of shoes for Bob Brady. But it's cool. It's cool if your grandparents went to
18:20 college. I get it. That's nice. Um, but pain, but the forecast is pain.
18:28 Another contributor to the low scoring will be the weather, but yeah, the running the running game,
18:36 as coach Tom Osborne said last week, what, you know, talked about the weather and wind and
18:41 how important the running game is there. So I, again, reinforce last week, you know,
18:46 Tom Osborne comes on. It's like, you know, the wind does blow occasionally. And what does he do?
18:51 And I'm going to meet with the team. He calls a play and then they, then they use it and it scores
18:57 a touchdown. I was like, Oh, that was Turner Gill used to throw that play. And it was just, um,
19:05 he did it with such skill and it was so amazing. The belly option. And, uh, apparently Ron Brown's
19:12 been asking for it for a while, but yeah, coach, coach rule said he, he pointed up to the Osborne's
19:17 box, uh, on that one. Do you think that Nebraska will run a pass on their first offensive play?
19:25 Or do you think they'll run the ball? My guess is this week. They're going to run the ball.
19:30 I think they'll pass again just to be pricks. It's like, no, I hear you people. And so if they're
19:37 passing the first play, I'll, I'll, I'll laugh again, back to the stats. They're passing defense
19:43 is ranked 91st. So there's some holes in that passing defense. So their total defense is right.
19:49 91. Our total defense is 21. I like our setup, despite the, it's only a two and a half point
19:54 margin. We're going to play great defense and we're going to run the ball. The black shirts
19:58 will carry the day. And then Malachi is going to get loose a couple of times. All right. I predict.
20:05 There you have it. There's our pre-show prediction. How do we end this? We're on a streak
20:10 with this right now. So we have to end this. I like this, this angle in your office. This is
20:15 where you get a little bit of the light. That's just good. It's not that boring sunlight that we
20:19 had last week. You know, this is a better angle. I like the dark, the dark colors of your office
20:24 area. A sunlight is never boring. And B I look good from every angle. She is stock. Well,
20:31 certainly the sunlight has a lot of, there's a reason the lighting looks better because it has
20:36 a lot to reflect off of it. Like the whole goal. You're lighting up half the dough.
20:43 Right. Right. Wait, wait, wait. I'm just going to drop the bell. I'm going to drop the belly
20:49 option right under its forehead here. Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Go back to pass.
20:53 That's not a belly option. It's going to catch right there.
20:56 All right. Take us out. Yeah.
21:00 Oh, big red.
21:03 Got it. Nice.
