00:00 The election court in Melaka on Friday affirmed the victory of Dato' Mas Ermiyati Samsudin
00:06 in the general election last year. Mas Ermiyati won the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat with
00:12 a 4,411-vote majority.
00:16 Judge Dato' Abu Bakar Kata turned down the election petition filed by Barisan National
00:21 candidate Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid to cancel the win. The court also ordered Abdul Hakim
00:26 to pay costs amounting to RM50,000 to Mas Ermiyati as the respondent.
00:31 "This is a victory for Masjid Tanah. I don't have much to say. Thank you very much.
00:41 This is not a failure. I will continue to do my job as a parliamentarian, as a PAC official.
00:50 With this victory, God willing, we will be more motivated."
00:54 "28 witnesses have been called. 25 from the petitioners, only three from us, including
01:02 Mas' wife. After the petition was cancelled, we argued that it should have been paid a
01:11 higher cost. Because in other places where we have filed this petition, there were not
01:19 many, not even 20 people. But we were able to get a high cost. We feel it was not excessive.
01:26 We asked for RM150,000. But Alhamdulillah, the judge has given us the cost we have accepted."
01:33 The judge said the petitioner failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Mas Ermiyati
01:38 or her agent carried out bribery activities as claimed by the petitioner during the election
01:43 campaign.
01:44 He said Mas Ermiyati did not have knowledge or give permission to a Bersatu Armada leader
01:50 to appear at the premises and allegedly offer bribes.
01:53 He said there was also no evidence that Bersatu Armada leader openly attended the campaign
01:58 in Masjid Tanah to ensure the victory for Mas Ermiyati.
02:02 He said the court did not need to take an overly rigid approach to the point of thwarting
02:06 the intention of law to maintain the sanctity of the election process.
02:11 In January, Abdul Hakeem filed a petition alleging corruption in the form of money and
02:16 fees used to lure voters in the general election.
