Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph discusses facing the Kanas City Chiefs without his starting safety Kareem Jackson.

00:00 How big of an adjustment being without Kareem?
00:04 >> Well, he's a starter, Mike, and he's a veteran starter who's very wise.
00:08 So not having Kareem is not good for our defense, but we have young guys that we
00:13 believe in who's played good football for us and moving forward,
00:16 that's who we're playing with for a while.
00:17 So I have confidence in those guys, so no worries.
00:20 >> Coach, how do you coach guys to be aggressive without falling down?
00:24 >> Well, it's tough, obviously.
00:26 The game's changing as far as how players are asked to play the game.
00:31 And it's a fine line between playing aggressive and playing within the rules.
00:37 I think Jack's a guy who's played a certain way for a long time, and
00:41 he's trying to figure out how to play different.
00:43 It's just tough when it's bang, bang plays, and
00:46 it's tough to explain what they should do sometimes when it's happening so fast.
00:51 And often, it's guys falling, or he's deemed defenseless when he's catching
00:55 the ball, and it's your job to knock the ball loose.
00:58 So it's a tough deal, and it's gray, it's not black and white for the players.
01:03 >> How do you coach it?
01:05 >> Well, you coach it to lower the pad level, keep the head out of contact,
01:09 don't hit their head or neck area.
01:11 So that's been coached, guys, for a long time.
01:13 For the last, I would say, ten years, we've coached that differently.
01:17 But it still happens because guys catch the ball and they're falling, right?
01:20 And you're going in to hit his shoulder, and he's falling, and
01:23 now the neck's involved.
01:24 So it's an ongoing discussion, and I feel bad that Jack's involved with this,
01:29 because he loves the play, loves his teammates, and we need him.
01:34 But he is trying to comply with the rules, he is.
