Joe Burrow on Bengals' Win Over 49ers
Transcript
00:00 you managed to scramble and make a completion to T?
00:04 - Yeah, tough to, tough to break those down.
00:07 They just kind of happen.
00:08 You know, really that was athleticism,
00:14 acceleration, explosiveness was really a big focus of mine
00:18 in the off season.
00:19 I just haven't really been able to show that too much.
00:21 So it was nice to have that hard work pay off.
00:24 - So how much does it feel like after the bye week
00:26 that there's no time for you guys?
00:27 'Cause this is now three straight years
00:29 before right out of the bye you get a huge road week.
00:30 - Yeah, it was a great week of prep.
00:33 That's really where it starts.
00:34 The urgency was really high all week.
00:36 Great days of practice and it wasn't perfect,
00:41 but you learn from every rep that you get
00:43 and you were able to correct it very quickly.
00:45 So it was a great week.
00:47 We're gonna learn from this one and move on.
00:49 - Jordan, you touched down to chase
00:50 and then find Wilson and Pratt on the sideline.
00:53 What would you say to those guys?
00:55 - Man, I mean, Jermaine's play in the red zone
00:58 was unbelievable.
00:59 I told him that was one of the best plays,
01:01 defensive plays I've ever seen.
01:02 That was big time.
01:03 He just needs to stay in bounds and go score next time too.
01:07 - Joe, what did you think going on a Senate day?
01:09 Did that help?
01:10 Did that kind of loosen things up a little bit?
01:11 - Yeah, we were able to get some big play action shots
01:15 off of that.
01:16 We got some great production out of that.
01:18 So that's gonna continue to be part of what we do.
01:21 - Can you take me through the wild scramble
01:24 on the first drive?
01:25 I mean, you held it for almost,
01:26 it was a 10 seconds time to throw.
01:28 Did you think you were going down?
01:30 What did you see on that one?
01:31 - Well, I never think I'm going down.
01:32 I'm gonna fight to the end on those.
01:35 It was, when plays break down like that,
01:39 I've always prided myself in being able
01:41 to get out of those situations and make plays.
01:43 Like I said, that's something that I worked really hard on
01:46 in the off season.
01:47 I just haven't really been able to show that.
01:48 So it was nice to see that hard work pay off.
01:50 - Joe, one trademark you guys have shown
01:52 is overcoming adversity.
01:53 Like at the end of the first half,
01:55 turn it over there, or if Smith fumbles,
01:57 and then you come out and put points on the board.
01:59 How important kind of structure of that game was that?
02:02 - Yeah, like I said, it wasn't perfect.
02:04 That's for sure.
02:05 We left points out there and we had some mental mistakes
02:07 that we got to clean up,
02:08 but overall it was a well-executed game.
02:11 But it was a great team win.
02:14 Complimentary football.
02:15 Defense stepped up in big spots.
02:16 Offense stepped up in big spots.
02:18 Special teams stepped up in big spots.
02:20 - What have you seen from Andre in his growth?
02:22 Has he had touchdowns at back-to-back games?
02:24 - Yeah, he's not getting a ton of opportunities,
02:27 but the opportunities that he's getting,
02:28 he's making the most of.
02:29 He's really savvy in scramble drill situations.
02:32 Both of his touchdowns have come that way.
02:36 So that's exciting to see,
02:38 and we're gonna see more of it going forward.
02:40 - For the first three years of your career,
02:42 there was a lot of talk about the offensive line.
02:44 And when things weren't going well,
02:46 it was always comments on the offensive line.
02:48 How'd you feel like they played today,
02:49 and specifically Orlando Brown going up against
02:52 one of the best head rushers in the NFL?
02:53 - Yeah, they were awesome.
02:54 They were awesome.
02:56 Not just in the pass pro, but also in the run game.
02:59 That was a big part of the game today.
03:01 We were super efficient in the run game.
03:03 We almost had, I think we ended up
03:04 with over 100 yards rushing.
03:06 And so that's gonna be a big part
03:08 of what we do going forward.
03:09 That was a complete game on offense.
03:11 We gotta stack more of those together now.
03:12 - You got a chance to see Montana before the game.
03:15 Did you notice there were a lot of,
03:16 they were honoring past 49er teams and that stuff?
03:19 I don't know.
03:19 I did not, but me and Joe are good friends.
03:22 He's a great guy.
03:23 We've done some marketing things together.
03:26 So it's always nice to see him.
03:28 I always enjoy spending time with him.
03:30 - Why are you guys as an offense so able to evolve
03:32 and just change who you are with the course of the season?
03:35 - You have to, if you wanna be good.
03:37 We got great coaches that know what it takes.
03:39 And we got players that are able to take great coaching
03:44 and really apply it very quickly.
03:46 And so coming out of the bye,
03:49 we had a lot of things that we wanted to work on
03:51 and you saw it on the field today.
03:52 - Did that first drive,
03:53 when you kind of take some of that stuff
03:55 and put it into place like that for the first time,
03:56 feel like a big moment for the offense as well?
03:58 - It was a great start for us.
04:00 Great start for us, offense, defense, special teams.
04:02 And when you get off to hot starts like that,
04:05 it puts the defense in a much better position
04:07 than if you're playing from behind.
04:09 - The touchdown to Jemah,
04:10 Zach had said, you guys have been thinking about that.
04:15 Can you run through it?
04:15 Did you know when you got the ball,
04:17 you were gonna go right there?
04:18 It looked like kind of a fake swing.
04:20 - Yeah, well, it's no secret that we like to get the ball
04:23 in Jemah's hands quick on little perimeter screens like that.
04:28 And so you have to have stuff to compliment that.
04:30 And that was a great call by Zach.
04:32 - Joe, how fired up are you after scrambling
04:36 for first downs?
04:37 'Cause a couple of times today,
04:38 you slapped your helmet, looked pretty fired up.
04:41 - Yeah, it was, like I said,
04:42 I worked really hard on that all off season.
04:45 And for four to five weeks,
04:48 I haven't been able to really show that.
04:50 And so when you see hard work pay off, it's exciting.
04:54 - It's great to see, obviously, you guys have perspective.
04:56 You've made runs after starting slow.
04:59 How significant of a win does this feel?
05:01 - Yeah, it was a big win, but like I said, it was just one.
05:04 You know, there's still a lot of football left to be played.
05:08 This was week seven.
05:09 We got 10 more.
05:10 So this one means nothing if we come out and lay an egg,
05:13 you know, next week and the week after that.
05:14 So we just gotta keep stacking them together.
05:16 - Did you know how many consecutive completions you had?
05:18 Did you know that that number was getting up there?
05:20 - I did not know.
05:21 - Did you know what it ended up at?
05:23 - I think Zach said 19 or something like that.
05:24 - 19?
05:25 - Yeah.
05:26 - To be 28 of 32, I mean,
05:28 it's kind of an almost an absurd number.
05:29 What does that mean to you?
05:31 I know you value completions and all that.
05:33 So what does that mean to you?
05:34 - Yeah, I was able to put the ball in,
05:36 for the most part, all day in the right spot,
05:38 on the spot that I was trying to.
05:40 And that's what I expect out of myself.
05:44 You know, my footwork, I think a lot about,
05:46 and my mechanics.
05:47 And so when I'm not that, it's disappointing.
05:50 And so this is my standard.
05:52 - Your completion percentage has shot through the roof
05:54 the last few weeks.
05:55 Is that more indicative of where you are with the calf
05:58 than maybe anything else?
05:59 It's just the completion percentage?
06:00 - Yeah, I think, you know,
06:01 there's a lot of layers to that.
06:03 I think my mechanics have cleaned up
06:04 over the last couple of weeks.
06:06 And then also, you know, with my calf feeling better,
06:09 I feel more comfortable extending plays
06:12 and instead of, you know, maybe throwing the ball away
06:15 in those same situations that I had
06:17 in the first couple of weeks.
06:19 And so I think it's a combination of a couple of things.
06:21 - I have to ask, is the last time you were wearing
06:23 a compression sleeve on a certain part of your body,
06:25 it alerted a lot of people?
06:27 You have a compression sleeve on your arm?
06:29 - Yeah, I mean, when you play, yeah, my arm's fine.
06:32 It's just a little, just a little swollen.
06:34 That's what happens when you play football.
06:35 So you gotta get the swelling out.
06:38 Everybody's got something.
06:39 - Did those bad, the throws that you didn't like
06:41 from Seattle eat at you over the bye?
06:43 I mean, you didn't, you would have liked
06:45 to have completed more passes against Seattle, obviously,
06:48 to come out here and be this accurate.
06:50 I mean, was that a product of those kind of sitting
06:53 in your head for two weeks a little bit?
06:54 - Yeah, yeah, I think so.
06:56 You know, it was a combination of a lot of things
06:57 two couple of weeks ago.
06:58 And, you know, when you have the bye,
07:00 you're able to, you know, sit back
07:03 and really deeply think about mechanics, routes, timing,
07:08 footwork, all that.
07:10 And so that was really what I did on my bye.
07:11 And it was nice to see that work pay off.
07:13 - When you look at what the team did,
07:15 what was done over the last couple of years,
07:16 what the expectations are, is the performance today
07:18 kind of what you expect this team to look like
07:20 when the season, you know, when y'all start a training camp
07:22 and get into here?
07:23 - Yeah, this is the standard.
07:24 And like I said, it wasn't perfect.
07:26 There's still a lot to get better at, and we're going to.
07:29 So we just gotta keep stacking days together.
07:30 It was a great day.
07:31 And then Wednesday's gotta be a great practice,
07:34 Thursday, and so on.
