Steven Grant Grebeck, who was the world's fastest Pro 5.0 Mustang driver at 6.65 secs and 213+ mph, was involved in a high speed collision with Bill Rimmer Jr.'s Pro 5.0 car during round one of eliminations. Grebeck's Precision Turbo Ford Mustang jumped to a lead in the right lane before drifting towards the guard-rail. Grebeck then lost control, shooting across the track in front of Rimmer's Mustang, which struck Grebeck's car in the driver's door as it started to roll. The hit launched Grebeck's vehicle over the guard-rail, and the Mustang flipped several times and caught fire. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the accident but it was soon apparent that Steve had expired due to massive injuries. Opponent Bill Rimmer was transported to hospital with only minor injuries.

Steven Grant Grebeck is buried in Parkview Memorial Cemetery, Livonia, Michigan.
