The first day of the traditional Rally de Tucumán, the third round of that year’s Argentinean Rally Championship, took place on Friday, 25 May 2007. During the last special stage of that day, a segment named Las Lenguas-Alpachiri, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI of duo Ricardo Collado and Alejandro Martínez crashed at about 160 km/h against the parapet of a bridge some two kilometers from the small town of Alpachiri and somersaulted. Co-driver Alejandro Martínez lost his life at the scene; Ricardo Collado, who sustained serious head injuries, was taken by rescuers to the Hospital Regional de Concepción. Due to his critical condition, he was later transferred to the Sanatorio Modelo in Tucumán. Preliminary findings indicated that the car suffered brake failure prior to impact.

Thirty-one year old Alejandro Martínez had just had his racing debut as a co-driver earlier that year. He was the son of the mayor of Villa Allende, a town located in the Province of Córdoba. After the accident the rally was immediately stopped, and the final classification was declared by the end of the first day. Its winner were the Argentine team Roberto Sánchez-Edgardo Galindo, in a Subaru Impreza.
