  • last year
The 2014 edition of the Paredones Desert Challenge at Los Cabos, state of Baja California Sur, Mexico, was suspended in consequence of an accident that resulted in the death of a spectator and another seriously injured.

The event was the seventh round of the Baja California Sur Off-Road Championship. Based at the Rancho Paredones, Los Cabos, the race was held on Sunday, 30 November 2014. The accident occurred around 14h50, when the white class 7 Ford F-150 Raptor #703 driven by Guillermo Valdéz Rocha was closely following another pick-up along a fast sand straightaway on the Arroyo Salto Seco, near the small village of Candelaria. The first vehicle raised a cloud of dust that brought visibility down to a few meters, it is believed this caused Valdéz Rocha's car to go out of control. It impacted an artificial ramp on the left side of the road and rolled over, hitting two spectators too close to the race course.

One of them, Mauricio Zamora Collins, 28, was transported to the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) Hospital in Los Cabos, where he died of his injuries shortly after admission. His brother Manuel Zamora Collins, who was spectating the race alongside him, suffered a broken leg.

Known as "Mauri", the victim was a taxi driver from Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, and a well known quad racer in the region.
