Ano nga ba ang All Souls' Day at paano ito aalalahanin? #Undas2023

00:00 During All Saints Day, thousands of Filipinos go to the cemetery to remember their loved ones.
00:09 This is one of the most important traditions in our culture because it shows our respect, love and remembrance of our loved ones who have passed away.
00:20 So, let's give us some information on the importance of All Saints Day and how we should remember it.
00:27 We have with us this morning, Fr. Arlo Bernard-Dreyap. Good morning, Father, and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:33 Good morning, Fifi. Good morning, Dianne. Good morning, Rise and Shine Philippines. Good morning.
00:37 Thank you for your time, Fr. Arlo.
00:39 Many of our fellow Filipinos have different beliefs about the holidays.
00:44 Can you please explain to us, Father, what is the importance of All Saints Day?
00:50 All Saints Day, Dianne and Fifi, started with giving honor to our deceased saints.
01:01 It started in the 4th century.
01:05 It was in the 9th century, November 1.
01:10 The Castilians called it Dia de los Santos.
01:17 That's why it started on November 1.
01:19 Since the 9th century, Pope Gregory IV started it every November 1.
01:25 The reason, Dianne and Fifi, is because many saints,
01:29 because of their beliefs, can't be included in the 365 days.
01:35 That's why we have a generic celebration for all the saints,
01:40 so that they can be in the same faith and love for God.
01:43 So, for the Filipinos, we have a National Heroes' Day.
01:47 That's right, Fifi. That's right, Dianne.
01:50 But in the Philippine context, what is the origin of All Saints Day in the Philippines?
01:56 Is there a historical background to it? Tell us, Father.
02:00 It's funny because there are some Castilians who use the term "honras".
02:08 They call it "honras", meaning "you honor".
02:11 "Funer" means "the dead". "You honor the dead". "Honras".
02:15 But us Filipinos, sometimes we can't pronounce "honras",
02:19 so we start with "undras".
02:22 And since we can't pronounce it often, we make it "undas".
02:28 So, it starts with "honras", "undas", "honors", "you honor the saints".
02:34 Like that, the "yumaong".
02:36 What are the traditions or rituals that Filipinos usually do every year
02:42 to remember their loved ones and what are the importance of these?
02:48 One of the thoughts here is the communion of saints.
02:51 When we say "communion of saints", it means that the living and the dead
02:56 are together in faith.
02:59 So, when we say "undras" or "undas", we celebrate the living
03:05 so that they can pray and at the same time, we can bond.
03:10 So, when it's November 1, there's a lot of bonding,
03:13 a lot of being together with family and it's part of the celebration.
03:17 It's also written there, I believe in the year, the Apostles' Day.
03:22 It's called the communion of saints.
03:24 It's part of our tradition as Catholics.
03:28 But we know that especially for our loved ones,
03:31 we have different ways of respecting them.
03:34 I mean, what is the importance of giving respect to them
03:39 and of course, talking about love to our loved ones, even if they're older.
03:45 That's why, Fifi, I always tell people when we celebrate this,
03:49 the culture of bonding.
03:52 When we say "culture", it means a way of life.
03:55 So, it's been a culture of bonding when we're together with family on November 1.
04:00 That's why the province is really coming home to celebrate the communion of saints.
04:04 I will come from Pampanga yesterday to be with my relatives and friends
04:08 because we celebrate our being together, especially before our death,
04:12 our loved ones in life.
04:15 We Filipinos are very family-oriented.
04:18 So, it's like they're just there for us.
04:23 But what is the importance of All Souls Day, Father Arlo?
04:27 The truth is, All Souls Day is for us, the young people.
04:32 But I think, we celebrate November 1 as All Saints Day
04:36 because we would like to claim already that our young people
04:43 are peaceful with God.
04:46 And they can also be saints because of the good things they've done for us.
04:51 So, we think we celebrate November 1 as All Saints Day
04:55 for our deceased relatives and friends and family members
05:00 so that they can think that they will also be holy.
05:03 Alright, Father, I think that's all for us, the young people,
05:07 for those who are going to their loved ones in life,
05:11 this All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
05:13 One thing that's very good to think about is that
05:16 on All Saints Day, we pray for our dead.
05:19 We pray for their atonement.
05:21 This is what's written in the 2nd book of Maccabees,
05:24 "Praying for the dead for the atonement of their sins."
05:26 At the same time, as we pray for them, we thank God for all their goodness
05:30 that the Lord will reward them with goodness.
05:33 And number three, the goodness of each one of us,
05:37 the culture of bonding, the culture of faith,
05:39 when we are together.
05:41 Because in truth, not everyone is always together forever.
05:47 That's why I always say, Phi Phi and Dian,
05:49 "While some things last, we enjoy each other while some things last."
05:52 Because some good things, as Father Marilo said, never last.
05:56 That's beautiful.
05:58 Thank you so much, Father Arlo, for sharing this information
06:03 about All Saints Day and its importance.
06:06 Father Arlo, Bernardo Yap, thank you so much.
06:08 Thank you, Rise and Shine, Filipinas.
