Transcript
00:00 We'll be going to opening remarks from Coach Pierce, and then we'll hear from
00:03 Jim Kelly, and we'll open it up for questions.
00:06 >> Thank you, first and foremost.
00:07 Thank you to Mr. Davis, Joshua Daniels, Dave, Patrick Graham,
00:13 for bringing me here, giving me this opportunity.
00:16 It's never easy when you lose a teammate, a co-worker,
00:20 somebody that you're close with.
00:22 We take that very seriously.
00:24 There's lives and families that's affected by this, and we understand it.
00:29 But it's a new day, it's a new chapter, it's a new era, it's a new mindset.
00:34 What is that mindset?
00:35 It's that of the Raider pride, the commitment to excellence, and
00:41 making sure our alumni, our fan base, and
00:44 Raider nation are proud of what they see on the field.
00:48 What does that look like?
00:50 Tough, passionate, effort, energy,
00:55 that enthusiasm that you see when we all watch our kids and these young men who are
01:00 now pro athletes play with Aaron Pop Warner, having that love for the game.
01:04 We're on the same page, champ and myself, our staff is connected.
01:10 We had a great team meeting this morning, everybody was still eyed and focused.
01:13 We walked in with a smile on our face.
01:15 The synergy, the energy in this building, and
01:18 the personality of our players will reflect on who we are as Raiders.
01:24 This is a great opportunity for myself, I'm humble, I'm honored, and
01:27 I'll take it lightly.
01:28 I'm sure there'll be questions about why, how, those all get answered.
01:35 But this is about the players, this is about the Raiders, and
01:37 this is about this organization, and we're tired of losing.
01:40 It's not a good feeling for a production-based business.
01:46 We're about competition, being competitive, and play with the edge and
01:49 the swag, and a certain confidence that we walk out that damn tunnel,
01:54 that everybody watching TV can see it, and a product on the field is something we're proud of.
01:57 >> Hunter, a few things before we move forward.
02:02 Again, to Josh McDaniels, Laura, and the kids, David Ziegler,
02:09 Carissa, and the kids, I love you all dearly.
02:14 So much respect for you.
02:16 My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I'm forever grateful.
02:19 For those of you who know me, you guys have seen me with my three daughters.
02:25 They are my everything.
02:26 Today, my middle child turns ten, her name is Chloe.
02:31 So happy birthday, Chloe.
02:32 Today, you are my favorite daughter.
02:33 They are the best parts of me.
02:37 To my wife, Stephanie, I'm not here without your support.
02:42 She's a real GM, and I love her dearly.
02:46 Although the circumstances are not ideal,
02:50 there's always an opportunity and difficulties.
02:54 I couldn't be prouder to accept this opportunity as
02:58 the interim general manager for the Las Vegas Raiders.
03:02 I'm so eager and excited to get to work.
03:06 To Mark Davis, Sandra Morgan, Larry Dilson, thank you for believing in me.
03:12 Thank you for this opportunity.
03:14 I promise you that I won't squander the moment.
03:17 Make no mistake, I'm prepared for this position.
03:22 I believe in the power of intercessory prayer.
03:26 I know people all over the country are praying for me in this moment.
03:31 I receive so much support from colleagues, GMs across the league,
03:36 former players, coaches, advisors, family, friends, my champ camp warriors.
03:42 I promise you I'll get back to you.
03:44 You're one of those guys that when I see the little dot of missed messages,
03:47 I gotta go through all of them.
03:48 So I promise to get back to you.
03:51 I'm prepared for this because I know what I don't know.
03:55 There will be hiccups.
03:57 It won't be perfect.
03:58 But I'm wise enough to know that God equips those he calls.
04:03 I'm perfectly imperfect, but I know the source.
04:06 To Raider Nation, in the squad meeting this AM,
04:10 we talked about committing to three things, trust, pride, and poise.
04:16 We talked about having a commitment to excellence.
04:19 We talked about confidence, just winning.
04:23 We're gonna put our blinders on.
04:26 We're gonna run our own race.
04:28 And we don't get to pick the terrain.
04:30 There will be hills, there will be potholes.
04:33 We gotta run on some pebbles.
04:34 And the race is not always won by the swift or the strong, but
04:39 it's won by those who persevere.
04:42 To our fans, I hear your concerns.
04:46 I share your frustrations.
04:47 We're going to work to present to you a product worthy of your support.
04:52 Thank you for sticking with us.
04:54 I look forward to seeing you fill up Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.
04:59 With this, I open it up for questions.
05:02 >> Antonio, you just outlined a mantra and
05:05 a mindset that you want this team to be about.
05:08 What can you do to immediately get that message across to the players so
05:13 that that's what they put out on the field on Sunday?
05:16 >> Yeah, one is empower your coaches and your players in the building.
05:18 To have the dialogue and openness and accountability and the trust and
05:23 respect for one another, where we can start to make change.
05:26 That's first and foremost.
05:28 It starts with walking this building, enjoying and
05:31 loving the fact that you're a Raider, embracing the fact that you're a Raider,
05:35 loving the fact that you're next to your brother.
05:37 When you start doing those things, you start playing together, that energy, and
05:42 when I talked about those guys' synergy in the building, now we have a connection.
05:46 And now we can start growing for them.
05:47 But at the end of the day, you understand, just like I do,
05:49 it's a production-based business.
05:50 We have to produce, we have to play hard for 61 minutes, which we'll do, and
05:54 we have to play with the effort that everybody's used to the Raider Nation
05:56 playing with.
05:57 >> On a human level, how do you go about compartmentalizing the thoughts that you
06:04 may have about, obviously, this team is gonna be in a situation after this season
06:07 where they're looking for a new head coach, a new GM, with focusing on the present,
06:11 but also maybe thinking forward to those type of things to maybe be serious
06:14 with those openings?
06:15 >> The reality for me is, Tayshaun is, I'm focusing on one day at a time.
06:20 We said we're a team, no sleep.
06:24 We talked late last night, woke up early this morning, got together,
06:29 excited to bring this vision together.
06:31 But we're not looking forward to tomorrow, that tomorrow worry by itself.
06:36 We're focusing on the now.
06:37 Our team is focusing on the now.
06:40 Those players are focusing on right now, and that's all we have.
06:42 >> Antonio, when you got into coaching, was this a goal of yours to eventually
06:48 become a head coach, and what does this opportunity mean to you on a personal
06:51 level? >> Yeah, I've been fortunate.
06:53 Played at a high level, went all the way back to my roots and
06:56 coached at Long Beach Poly.
06:58 High school was a head coach there.
07:00 Was at New York Giants in 2017, and then college for four years.
07:04 And had opportunities to lead.
07:06 Go to other organizations, I decided not to.
07:09 The short story, the matter of fact is, I grew up in Compton, California.
07:11 I was born a Raider.
07:13 I was born with the Raiders rolling in the Coliseum in LA.
07:18 I was rolling with NWA, talking straight out of Compton, rocking Raider hats.
07:22 So when the opportunity came to work with Josh and Pat Graham and Dave,
07:26 I jumped on it.
07:28 So that's what set me up for this.
07:29 I was born this way.
07:30 >> Coach, how surreal is it gonna be to coach your first NFL game against
07:34 a team that you won a Super Bowl with as a player?
07:36 >> How about that?
07:37 Pretty right, but it's not Antonio Pierce versus the New York Giants.
07:41 Las Vegas Raiders versus the Giants coming to our house.
07:44 Much needed win for us.
07:47 We've had two ugly losses.
07:50 It's time to change that.
07:52 We're in the second half of the season.
07:55 Doesn't matter who Antonio Pierce is playing for.
07:58 It's about the Las Vegas Raiders, those players understand.
08:00 It's about them, it ain't about me.
08:01 >> Jim, these things happen every year throughout the league,
08:05 not often, but a short week in the middle of the season.
08:08 When you understood this was happening here, I got a call, were you surprised?
08:12 >> We're definitely surprised.
08:14 I don't think we saw it coming.
08:17 But I plan every day of my life to be prepared for any situation.
08:25 Putting my trust in the Lord and allowing him to guide me.
08:30 So whenever these situations arise,
08:33 I'm fully confident that he will equip me and we're ready to roll.
08:37 >> Coach, you obviously bring a certain level of intensity to the table.
08:44 And I'm wondering, you're very demonstrative, very expressive.
08:47 I'm wondering if that's the kind of fit the team really will respond to and
08:52 needs at this point.
08:54 >> We had a good team meeting this morning.
08:55 We had a full house.
08:57 And I think I had everybody's attention, I had their eyes.
09:00 I'm not a long-winded person.
09:02 I don't give you a dialogue or write an essay.
09:05 I get right to the point, it's black and white.
09:06 You know how I feel when I walk out the door.
09:08 I've been around these guys for two years now as a linebacker coach.
09:14 And I made my presence known both in the linebacker room,
09:17 the defensive line room, the quarterback room, the running back room.
09:21 I'm a former player, I've touched former players.
09:23 I can relate to them.
09:25 I've done the same things they've done.
09:26 I've walked the same paths they've walked.
09:27 I've felt the same pain they felt.
09:29 So there's nothing or any emotional ride or
09:32 roller coaster that they haven't gone through this year.
09:34 Over the two years I've been with them, that I haven't felt.
09:37 And my personality, my personality will come out and reflect on this team.
09:42 And hopefully we see that on Sunday.
09:44 >> Antonio, talking to players, they sometimes look around and say,
09:47 there's just too much talent on this team for it to be this difficult.
09:50 And to be struggling the way they've been struggling.
09:52 Do you share that sentiment that the answers are in that locker room and
09:55 that that can get unlocked?
09:57 >> One question, no question about it.
09:58 I mean, we can talk about players, we can go down our roster and you say, wow.
10:02 Devontae Adams, Josh Jacobs, you look at our own line.
10:05 You look at our quarterback, you look at the way our tight end is playing.
10:07 Defensively, how we play.
10:08 We've been really well on special teams throughout the season.
10:10 It's funny with a little belief and confidence gives a group.
10:19 And this is just what we're gonna believe and what we're about.
10:22 It's about them being themselves.
10:23 I told them when they walk in this door, I need to feel them.
10:25 They're gonna feel me 100%, but I gotta feel them.
10:28 I need that personality that's building these personality.
10:30 When we walk in here, everybody in here should be smiling.
10:33 We all got a job.
10:34 We're doing something, we're covering the greatest game in the world,
10:36 the National Football League.
10:38 If you're not excited about that, there's something wrong with it.
10:40 >> Was there a lack of excitement before?
10:42 I mean, being that that's something that needed to be addressed,
10:44 what was the atmosphere like before?
10:45 >> I don't think that it was not addressed, it just gotta embrace it.
10:52 It's been embraced now.
10:53 >> Coach, congratulations first of all.
10:57 Congratulations to both of you and happy birthday to your daughter.
10:59 >> Appreciate it.
11:00 >> A quick question, when you talk about personalities and this being so human,
11:04 what was the reaction of the players when you gave them the news?
11:07 Obviously, you're all smiling.
11:09 As you say, you want us all to smile.
11:11 It's been a few weeks, rough, kind of difficult to smile.
11:15 And so what was their reaction like and
11:17 what do you think is the priority moving forward towards the New York Giants?
11:21 Other than winning the game all these years.
11:22 >> Right, I mean, what are you mad about?
11:26 You know what I mean?
11:28 Like I just said it, we're playing a kid's game.
11:31 We're gonna pay millions of dollars to do it.
11:34 We're fortunate to play for an alumni base,
11:38 a owner, a fan base that live and die Raiders.
11:43 And when we walk in that stadium, it's gotta be electric.
11:46 And what I told these guys is, it's simple, man, listen.
11:49 Who knows, I'm not promising we're gonna go undefeated.
11:51 I'm not promising we're gonna do the record books.
11:54 But I am promising you this, we're gonna have fun doing it.
11:57 And I know when you start having fun and you guys start believing in one another and
12:00 they start really engaging in each other and
12:03 believing in what the coaches are telling them.
12:06 And understand it's in their best interest that we are in this together.
12:09 When you put the we aspect and us and team into it,
12:12 it changes all that from the eyes.
12:15 >> What do you think is gonna be the quarterback position going forward?
12:18 >> It'll be Aiden going forward.
12:19 >> Why?
12:21 >> We just feel like this is his best chance.
12:23 >> What was the reaction like in the locker room when you made that announcement?
12:28 >> Very supportive.
12:29 >> Yeah, the guys are rallying behind him.
12:31 They're excited to watch him get his opportunity.
12:34 I was there as AP was speaking to the team and he had their eyes.
12:39 There was an energy that was tangible in the room.
12:43 There was a true excitement and guys are geared up to prepare for this weekend.
12:49 >> How much does it help that coach obviously played in the league and
12:52 did it at the highest level and has a brain to prove it?
12:55 >> I mean, there's no better form of teaching than modeling, right?
13:00 So this guy did put on those pads, he strapped it up,
13:02 he played at high level football games.
13:04 They know that he's carried himself just like this every single day,
13:08 authentically himself, right?
13:10 And that's what we promised these guys, we're gonna be honest,
13:13 we're gonna be authentic.
13:15 The guys never gonna bless who you pretend to be, right?
13:19 And so we're gonna be ourselves in this situation, we're gonna have fun with it.
13:22 And I think they were excited to hear that.
13:24 >> What do you have to say to your new offensive coordinator?
13:27 >> I'm sorry, what do you- >> Your new offensive coordinator,
13:29 what do you have to say to him?
13:30 >> I mean, we talked about it.
13:31 I mean, the key thing is we just talked about a lot of weapons on our team and
13:34 how to get to him.
13:35 We're gonna start a young quarterback, gotta protect him.
13:38 Last album, we didn't protect him very well, didn't protect him football.
13:40 So it's gonna go to that, for our whole entire offensive.
13:44 Turnover free football, get back to playing that kind of style of football where
13:49 you kind of impose your will and play with ill intent.
13:52 And you can do that with offense, you can do that with skill, guys.
13:54 I mean, we got Jacoby Byers, if you did not watch him crack a receiver,
13:58 excuse me, a defensive back or a linebacker, you're crazy.
14:01 He's not afraid to throw it in there.
14:02 So, and we got, still, one of the best running backs in the game.
14:06 And he understands that, he knows his role and what's gonna happen going forward.
14:09 And that's what's gonna help the quarterback.
14:10 >> And tell me, your defense has been playing well so far this season.
14:13 What do you expect from them moving forward?
14:15 >> More, more.
14:16 I mean, we gotta create turnovers.
14:17 We gotta stop these long drives.
14:19 Penalty's have been the biggest thing that's kind of hurt us in those situations.
14:22 I mean, we've had great moments and we had other moments like, what the hell?
14:25 Right, so just being consistent, first and foremost.
14:28 You know, being a defensive player, you stop the run, man.
14:29 You build it, Walt.
14:30 We made it one dimensional and I gotta tell Max, go eat.
14:32 Go eat. Party at the quarterback.
14:34 Let's celebrate and have fun doing it.
14:35 So what I like to see those guys keep doing, and Patrick Graham, let it loose.
14:39 Get your ears back, let the dogs loose.
14:43 And when the Raiders are rolling on defense, you guys see it.
14:46 It comes through the TV.
14:47 Max Crosby's energy, I'm trying to match his.
14:50 I gotta match that for the next 10 to 12 weeks.
14:53 >> Champ, we see what we see on Sundays, but
14:55 then there's your side of the building or upstairs.
14:59 How did that go with the staff that you now oversee?
15:02 >> Right, we've put together some,
15:04 the fortunate part is I've been here since the beginning.
15:07 And so we put together some very good practices and
15:11 policies for evaluating players and acquiring players.
15:16 So we feel confident with the people that we have doing the job.
15:19 We feel confident in the processes.
15:21 So it's more status quo on our end.
15:26 The guys are excited to work.
15:28 They're excited to keep grinding.
15:30 And they've been given the same mandate.
15:32 You walk into this building appreciative with a smile.
15:35 We wanna have positive energy.
15:37 And they're gonna do that and we're gonna capitalize off of it.
15:42 >> Some of the members of the locker room have been in this situation before,
15:45 Max Crosby, Josh Jacobs back in 2021 when John was out of the season.
15:50 Is it helpful at all just when it comes to keeping the locker room together and
15:53 informing them how to handle it that they've sort of been through this in the past?
15:57 >> Yeah, we talked about that last week as a team.
16:00 And a couple guys brought that up that's been here.
16:01 They've been through this, they understand what it's like,
16:03 the coaching change in the middle of the season.
16:04 And I'm relying on our leaders to lead.
16:07 I'm coming here with the game plan.
16:10 This is the picture that we're trying to paint.
16:11 But they gotta carry it throughout.
16:13 The best teams that I've ever been on as a player or as a coach, player ran.
16:16 Player ran, bottom line.
16:20 Devontae knows what it is.
16:22 Max Crosby knows what it is.
16:23 Robert Splain knows what it is.
16:24 Our captain's leaders know what it takes.
16:26 They gotta go out there and do it.
16:27 And they gotta carry that message and make sure that resonates.
16:29 And we block out all this outside noise.
16:31 And we're gonna get some over the next 72 plus hours.
16:34 That is just us against the world.
16:35 And that's our mentality we're gonna be ready on, us against the world.
16:38 Raider Nation against everybody else.
16:39 >> Antonio, there's still nine games left on the schedule.
16:43 And you're not out of it by any stretch of the imagination.
16:46 So do those immediate goals become the bigger goals as well?
16:50 Or are you looking at the big picture or just week to week now?
16:53 >> Trying to get through the day.
16:54 Trying to get through this media conference,
16:55 this press conference right now.
16:57 It's been a whirlwind, I'll be honest.
16:59 You're not prepared for this.
17:00 I mean, I was doing my DC notes the other day.
17:03 And all of a sudden you get a phone call.
17:05 And are you crazy to turn down this opportunity to work with Chairman Kelly?
17:09 No, to work with the staff and the players we have.
17:11 We have the team.
17:12 We have the people in this building.
17:14 We have the players in this building to win.
17:15 We just gotta go do it.
17:17 Enough talk, enough sitting here having these little clicks in the corner.
17:20 That's why I told the guys, put the goddamn pads on.
17:22 Let's go out there and work tomorrow and practice.
17:24 And let's get to bottom line and let's see where the results go on Sunday.
17:27 >> And also from a personal standpoint,
17:28 you probably have a lot of people back in California that are, what do you think?
17:32 I mean, I'm sure you've talked to a bunch of them, but
17:34 there's gotta be a great response by your family members and friends back there.
17:39 >> Yeah, yeah, I mean, ticket requests, I don't know.
17:41 We can pack the stadium up.
17:41 I need another 20,000.
17:42 >> [LAUGH] >> We'll be fine.
17:44 Look, the regulation does a great job.
17:46 They come wherever we go.
17:46 They travel well.
17:48 We got a big test this week with the Giants coming to town.
17:51 A great opportunity for us to get a fresh start and get back on the winning track.
17:55 >> Okay, we'll get everybody in here.
17:56 Let's go, Adam, Heidi, Chris, Paul, Q.
17:58 >> Coach, you talked about what you wanted to see from your offense.
18:02 How much of a challenge is it from now, the influence Josh had on offense,
18:05 from now until Sunday to kind of get a plan together and
18:08 what you guys wanna do and accomplish?
18:10 >> Yeah, I started this press conference by saying it.
18:14 New day, new month, new chapter, new mindset.
18:18 So whatever we did in the past, doesn't matter.
18:21 Now, I wish I could say we're zero, zero, we're not, but
18:23 we're approaching it that way.
18:24 We're approaching it the way Bo went in there today, the offense.
18:27 I spoke with those gentlemen.
18:28 They know exactly the task and the plan going forward and
18:34 what kind of offense we wanna portray.
18:36 And no, are you gonna sit there and rip up the whole playbook?
18:38 No, but you better go to your key guys.
18:41 I'm not a fool, I'm a player, remember?
18:42 I was a player before I was a coach.
18:44 Player ran business.
18:45 I've had the privilege of working with Bo in three different buildings now.
18:51 He's not afraid of the moment.
18:53 So we're confident in him.
18:54 He's gonna be authentically himself in this situation.
18:58 So you'll see Bo.
18:58 >> Coach, like you mentioned, as a player, right?
19:01 You have various experiences, several coaches throughout the years and
19:05 working in Arizona State as well.
19:06 Is there any particular person that influenced on you and
19:09 how you approach the coaching style?
19:12 >> Too many to name.
19:13 I was fortunate to play the two other organizations,
19:18 Marty Schottenheimer, Marvin Lewis, Joe Gibbs,
19:22 Greg Williams, Steve Spagnola, and Tom Coughlin.
19:26 And then finish it off with Herm Edwards.
19:28 So what you're gonna see from AP is a kind of a chameleon of all those guys put
19:32 together, along with my personality.
19:34 But I've learned so much through my time of either as a player,
19:37 as a coach going through the ranks.
19:39 I mean, probably the biggest thing I got over the last 16 or so hours is
19:45 text messages from them gentlemen.
19:47 And I'm so appreciative of them because there's no AP without them.
19:50 The knowledge, the support, the love they gave me when I was a young rookie,
19:55 are an opportunity to get into the coaching world.
19:58 I'm forever grateful.
19:59 >> This is a question for both of you guys.
20:02 You mentioned the team meeting that you had last week and
20:04 it's player driven business.
20:05 How much do you think it helped to hear from the players what was going on in
20:09 their minds in that meeting?
20:11 >> It was good.
20:12 It was direct.
20:13 It was blunt.
20:14 It was needed.
20:15 And everybody heard him.
20:18 Everybody built and heard him.
20:20 The good thing about when you allow that to happen,
20:23 you gotta sit there and you gotta brace yourself.
20:25 Sometimes you don't wanna hear.
20:27 There's finally a moment I don't even wanna hear that kind of stuff.
20:30 But you gotta have thick skin and you can't take it too personal.
20:32 It's an emotional business.
20:36 These men in that locker room go through hell and
20:39 back to get dressed and play every Sunday.
20:42 We're on a short week this week, guys are nicked up, banged and bruised.
20:45 They get up there, they put their cape on, they become a superhero again.
20:47 So what they said was loud and clear.
20:51 My message to them echoed their statements from that day.
20:55 And we'll continue to grow from that.
20:57 >> Let's do two more.
20:58 >> I think Christian and Paul.
20:59 >> What's good about that, Q, is I think what we have to do here,
21:05 these next weeks, is just to create a culture where it's safe to have
21:10 those conversations.
21:11 We want the truth.
21:12 We're gonna give them the truth.
21:14 It's gonna be real and it's gonna be raw.
21:17 It's gonna be uncut, right?
21:19 And so that's the type of environment that we want.
21:21 I think that's what we thrive at.
21:23 We build a community that has to be conflict, but
21:25 that also has to be commitment, right?
21:28 And extreme communication.
21:29 And so if we have those three things, we can have success.
21:33 >> Wrap it up with Chris and Paul.
21:34 Coach, I was just wondering, you seem like an enthusiastic,
21:37 excited guy, an interim head coach now.
21:40 Was there a point when even yourself, when you were with the players,
21:43 you were seeing them day in, day out, where you said, this thing's starting to spiral.
21:47 Out of control, it's not working, something's gotta be done.
21:51 And it was done, but
21:52 could you almost kind of sense that something was happening, need to be made?
21:55 >> Well, you just knew the last two weeks, we weren't ourselves.
21:59 Obviously, I've been on focus on the defense side of the ball,
22:00 Coach Leinebacker, so my focus was there.
22:04 But you could just sense as a team, you could feel the aura in the building.
22:07 You could feel the aura in the locker room and when you're around the guys.
22:09 So, did I have a good sense of it?
22:12 Yes.
22:12 Was it my place to talk about it and discuss it with anybody?
22:14 No.
22:15 >> Champ, you were in Denver in 2009, 2010, so
22:20 you had to kind of be part of that clean up effort there after what had happened.
22:23 How do you lean on that similar situation here to get things rolling again?
22:29 >> I've been through a few of them, unfortunately.
22:31 So that wasn't the only one.
22:34 Just focus on communication.
22:36 Sympathetic because here's the reality.
22:38 Most people see us on Sundays.
22:42 They see guys in helmets, pads.
22:44 They see coaches on the sideline that they think don't have lives outside of here.
22:48 The reality of it is, there are families involved.
22:53 There are wives who are planning.
22:55 My kids have to go to school today and
22:58 learn about a situation where we don't know what's next.
23:03 Right?
23:04 Like the Josh McDaniels family, David Ziegler's family, what's next?
23:09 So there's a reality of that that goes on anytime you have transition and change.
23:15 So sympathy to everyone's space and their situation.
23:23 But extreme communication so
23:24 people can relieve some of the uncertainty that they have.
23:28 And then after that, you just attack the moment with confidence.
23:32 So that's the stage that we are in right now.
23:35 >> All right, thank you gentlemen.
