BFAR says fishing season is closed

00:00 The fish and marine resources in the country's seas and maritime territories are not in unlimited
00:06 supply. Hence, it is incumbent to give them time to regenerate and repopulate, or give the small
00:12 fry time to grow by way of designating a part of the year as a closed season. Our Soojin Kim has
00:19 the full story. It is November and the close of the fishing season. According to the Bureau of
00:26 Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, fishing for sardines, herring and mackerel within the major
00:31 fishing grounds such as Palawan, the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Visayan Sea will be temporarily
00:36 banned. "In the event that we are implementing a closed fishing season to ensure that the fish
00:44 is in a stable supply, we will temporarily remove the fish within the months of the closed fishing
00:56 season to ensure a stable supply." This is a conservationist measure to ensure these species
01:02 and other marine life can spawn and repopulate, or allow fry and juvenile fish to mature.
01:09 "The government's goal is to have what we call self-sufficiency. And what we are doing,
01:17 the conservation measures, is one of the ways to ensure that our fish supply is sufficient for the
01:24 coming times." This policy allows for a sustainable use and exploitation of important
01:32 fishery resources, especially with incidents of overfishing, overexploitation, natural calamities
01:38 and the negative impacts of climate change. Soojin Kim, for The Nation.
